The Chimú were the residents of Chimor, with its capital at the city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche Valley of present-day Trujillo city. The culture arose about 900 AD. The Inca ruler Tupac Inca Yupanqui led a campaign which conquered the Chimú around 1470 AD.
This was just fifty years before the arrival of the Spanish in the region. Consequently, Spanish chroniclers were able to record accounts of Chimú culture from individuals who had lived before the Inca conquest. Similarly, archaeological evidence suggest Chimor grew out of the remnants of Moche culture; early Chimú pottery had some resemblance to that of the Moche. Their ceramics are all black, and their work in precious metals is very detailed and intricate.
The Chimú resided on the north coast of Peru: "It consists of a narrow strip of desert, 20 to 100 miles wide, between the Pacific and the western slopes of the Andes, crossed here and there by short rivers which start in the rainier mountains and provide a series of green and fertile oases." The valley plains are very flat and well-suited to irrigation, which is probably as old as agriculture here. Fishing was also very important and was almost considered as important as agriculture.
The largest Pre-Columbian city in South America,Chan Chan is an archaeological site in the northern Peruvian region of La Libertad, 5 km west of Trujillo. Chan Chan is located in the mouth of the Moche Valley and was the capital of the historical Chimor Empire from AD 900-1470 until they were defeated and incorporated into the Inka empire. The Chimor empire, a conquest state, developed from the Chimú culture which established itself along the Peruvian coast around 1400 AD. In the Chimú tongue, Chan Chan means "Sun Sun;" it was named for its sunny climate which is cooled year round by a southerly breeze.
Chan Chan is in a particularly arid section of the coastal desert of northern Peru. Due to the lack of rain in this area, the major source of water for Chan Chan is in the form of rivers carrying runoff from the Andes mountains. This runoff allows for control of land and water through irrigation systems.
The city of Chan Chan spanned 20 km² and had a dense urban center of 6 km² which contained extravagant ciudadelas.Ciudadelas were large architectural masterpieces which housed plazas, storerooms, and burial platforms for the royals The splendor of these ciudadelas suggests their association with the royal class. Housing for the lower classes of Chan Chan's hierarchical society are known as small, irregular agglutinated rooms (SIARs). Because the lower classes were often artisans whose role in the empire was to produce crafts, many of these SIARs were used as workshops.

These pre-Columbian civilizations also created the mighty Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, wove reed boats for fishing, dug canals for irrigation and designed refined jewelry and pottery. Northern Peru's Chan Chan Archaeological Zone is a massive complex that was once the capital of the Chimu civilization. But who were the Chimu? Why'd they build such a big city? Find out in this episode as you take a virtual tour of Chan Chan's ruins.
Take a tour of Chan Chan Ruins in Peru -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Chan Chan was the once vast capital of the industrious and innovative Chimu Empire. Dating back to the 1st century, the Chimu Empire stood strong until the mid 15th century when they were conquered by the Incas. Unfortunately, most of this capital city has been destroyed by both man and nature over time. The most well preserved structure of Chan Chan is the Tschudi Palace which housed the Chimu Empire's nobles. The exquisite craftsmanship that went into these adobe structures is a testament to its once thriving population. From certain vantage points, one can see the miles of ruins that stretch out over the Peruvian plain.
El Brujo, or the Wizard, the Huaca Arco Iris, or Rainbow Temple and the Temples of the Sun and the Moon are all ruins from the Moche culture, a pre-Inca civilization a short distance from Trujillo, on the coast north of Lima. El Brujo stands at the mouth of the Moche Valley. Grave robbers discovered its detailed mural paintings by accident in 1990, and its now one of the most prominent archaeological sites in the region. The oldest paintings include a series of snake like figures, while more recent ones feature humans conducting religious rituals and sacrifice. The Moche had no written language, but the walls of buildings like the Rainbow Temple depict all elements of their culture, what they grew and ate, what they wore, who they conquered and how they worshipped. Its other name is t...

In the mornin you go gunnin
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isnt hangin
And they put you on the street
You go back jack do it again
Wheel turnin round and round
You go back jack do it again
When you know shes no high climber
Then you find your only friend
In a room with your two timer
And youre sure youre near the end
Then you love a little wild one
And she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know shes smilin
Youll be on your knees tomorrow
You go back jack do it again
Wheel turnin round and round
You go back jack do it again
Now you swear and kick and beg us
That youre not a gamblin man
Then you find youre back in vegas
With a handle in your hand
Your black cards can make you money
So you hide them when youre able
In the land of milk and honey
