Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba (Spanish: República de Cuba ), is a country comprising the islands of Cuba, Isla de la Juventud and several archipelagos in the Caribbean Sea. The capital and largest city Havana is 365 km (227 mi) from Miami, Florida. Geographically, Cuba is considered part of North America. Culturally, it is considered part of Latin America.
Prior to Spanish colonization in the late 15th century, Cuba was inhabited by Amerindian tribes. It remained a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898, which led to nominal independence as a de facto U.S. protectorate in 1902. As a fragile republic, Cuba attempted to strengthen its democratic system, but mounting political radicalization and social strife culminated in the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Further unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965, the country has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba.
Charles Maximilian "Charlie" Siem (born 14 January 1986) is an English contemporary classical violinist as well as a model.
Charlie Siem was born in London, England, to billionaire Kristian Siem, a Norwegian businessman, and his South-African born wife Karen Ann, née Moross. His sister is Sasha Siem, a musician.
Siem began the study of violin at age three when his interest piqued upon hearing the cassettes his mother would play. He went on to study at Eton College and Girton College, Cambridge, and continued his violin studies with Itzhak Rashkovsky and Shlomo Mintz. He performed his first concerto with an orchestra at age 15, and played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at age 18. He has gained recognition in the past few years by playing alongside artists such as The Who and Miley Cyrus. Among his fans include Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Siem also professionally models having been the face of Dunhill London and Hugo Boss.
Siem is distantly related to Norwegian violin virtuoso and composer Ole Bull.
A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or traditions, often marked as a local or national holiday, mela or eid. Next to religion and folklore, a significant origin is agricultural. Food is such a vital resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time. Religious commemoration and thanksgiving for good harvests are blended in events that take place in autumn, such as Halloween in the northern hemisphere and Easter in the southern.
Festivals often serve to fulfill specific communal purposes, especially in regard to commemoration or thanksgiving. The celebrations offer a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups, contributing to group cohesiveness. They may also provide entertainment, which was particularly important to local communities before the advent of mass-produced entertainment. Festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics also seek to inform community members of their traditions; the involvement of elders sharing stories and experience provides a means for unity among families.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball league. A total of 30 teams now play in two divisions, the American League (AL) and National League (NL), with 15 teams in each. The AL and NL operated as separate legal entities from 1901 and 1876 respectively, until 2000, when they were merged into a single organization known as Major League Baseball. After cooperating but remaining legally separate entities since 1903, in 2000 the leagues merged into a single organization led by the Commissioner of Baseball. The organization also oversees minor league baseball leagues, which comprise about 240 teams affiliated with the major-league clubs. With the World Baseball Softball Confederation, MLB manages the international World Baseball Classic tournament.
Baseball's first professional team was founded in Cincinnati in 1869. The first few decades of professional baseball were characterized by rivalries between leagues and by players who often jumped from one team or league to another. The period before 1920 in baseball was known as the dead-ball era; players rarely hit home runs during this time. Baseball survived a conspiracy to fix the 1919 World Series, which came to be known as the Black Sox Scandal. The sport rose in popularity in the 1920s, and survived potential downturns during the Great Depression and World War II. Shortly after the war, baseball's color barrier was broken by Jackie Robinson.

Imagining Cuba apart from the history of its own music is impossible. In our nation, the origin and development of music has been, at all times, in intimate contact with the life of its people. Of all the music that comes out of the Cuban people, Son reigns supreme. And within Son and in the musical culture of Cuba as a whole, the Tres holds a position of great importance. Read complete article here: http://www.cubaabsolutely.com/Culture/article_music_traditional.php?id=Pancho-Amat The Cuban Tres is a guitar-like instrument with three courses (groups) of two strings each for a total of six strings. It most probably was born in the area of the Sierra Maestra Mountains, in the eastern part of Cuba, around the mid to late 18th Century, and had its ancestry in the Spanish Guitar. It is some...

It’s only 93 miles from Florida, and just 13 from the Bahamas, but like the smoke that coils from its legendary cigars, The Republic of Cuba exists in a time and space all its own. Few cities can stir the imagination like Cuba’s capital, Havana, a city preserved by forts, a five-mile seawall, and an imposed embargo, which held back the excesses of the 20th century for over 50 years. Havana’s lure can be hard to resist, but Cuba offers so much more beyond the seductive lights of its capital. In Cuba, a long sandy beach is never far away. Just 12 miles from Havana’s downtown, the Eastern Beaches unroll toward the town of Matanzas, the birthplace of the rumba, and Cárdenas, where the Cuban Flag flew for the very first time. From here, follow the scent of fresh lime, rum and suntan lot...
Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba. Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars. But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you ...

I visited Cuba in July 2016 and after 18 days touring the island I made up a list of information I wish I had before my holiday. This is my collection of advice and suggestions I've made to try and help anyone travelling to Cuba. I looked up help videos before my own trip, and what I learnt while there was really not covered in most of the videos I watched on youtube. I guess I'm trying to bring more tips all together in one video (albeit a slightly long video haha). There is a lot more to know, I'm sure... but this is a decent list that will give you hopefully more direction to research when planning your holiday. Travel video about destination Cuba. Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. It may be a while before Havana hosts a Cartier Polo match but Urban bike polo is here to stay, courtesy of the Havana Bike Polo club. For those in the know Urban bike polo is a faster variant of bike polo, which replaced horses with bikes in large fields. The urban equivalent can be played on any hard surface, has less players and a strict rule about goal number five leading to a mad scramble to the nearest pub or in Havana’s case, simply the nearest bottle of Havana Club. Typically idiosyncratic Havana’s Bike Polo club is short of everything but makes do with mallets made of old bathroom pipes and the like. Recently relocated you can find the regular polo gang every Sunday afternoon from 3pm at 23rd and 2nd in Vedado. ¡Vengan a jugar con nosotros! [And buy a t-shirt please]. Grass cour...
For the last few years I have been researching rituals and traditional roles that women play in Native cultures. During the research, I came across observations such as similar ritual/spiritual activities that women carry through the centuries in completely different parts of the world. For example, communication through sound has an almost identical application to Cuban Santeras (Cuba) as it has for the Nanai Shamans (Russian Far East area). Another important aspect that I came across has a social implication, which is the idea that drums were not always used for music. In Africa, and in the Russian Far East (Nanai Shamans), for example, music is an interpretation of everyday life in sound, where drums are on occasion a substitute for speech. Patterns of beats played in a c...

I had the great pleasure of meeting, and playing with this wonderful Tresero at the Pueblo la Estrella in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba. His name is Elder González Aquino and he is without a doubt the best Tres player I have ever met. Despite the name of his group "Los Tradicionales" he is a very modern player, he tunes to D and his F# course is in unison. He told me that above all other Treseros he loves Pancho Amat the most. I got an impromptu Changui lesson before he played his set, a small portion of that is at the intro of this video. His small group is fantastic! I was blown away by the first song Tico Tico, Elder's technique was so spot on and casual. I recorded until my battery gave out which happened half-way through Guantanamera. Elder solos on every song, his improvisations are t...

2006 WBC Film made in Cuba. This video depicts the 1st World Baseball Classic experience in the context of the Cuban National Team. Despite global skepticism about the true quality of their players, Cuba placed runner-up in this event. They lost the final game to Japan after amazing and improbable wins against Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Even though Cuba did not win this tournament, this sure is one of the best performances by a Cuban baseball team ever.
