Nicolaus Copernicus (/koʊˈpɜːrnɪkəs, kə-/;Polish: Mikołaj Kopernik [miˈkɔwaj kɔˈpɛrɲik]; German: Nikolaus Kopernikus; 19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the universe. The publication of this model in his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres) just before his death in 1543 is considered a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making an important contribution to the Scientific Revolution.
Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, a region that had been a part of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466. He was a polyglot and polymath who obtained a doctorate in canon law and also practiced as a physician, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist. Like the rest of his family, he was a third order Dominican. In 1517 he derived a quantity theory of money – a key concept in economics – and in 1519 he formulated a version of what later became known as Gresham's law.

Nicolaus Copernicus changed the way we view the world today. He was the first person to put forward the theory that Earth was a planet and orbited the Sun with the other planets rather than being the centre of the solar system as previously believed. De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) is the seminal work on the heliocentric theory of the Renaissance astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543). When the book was finally published, demand was low, with an initial print run of 400 failing to sell out.[17] Copernicus had made the book extremely technical, unreadable to all but the most advanced astronomers of ...
The observations of a 14th century Polish monk sparked the Scientific Revolution and profoundly altered the trajectory of humankind. The Webb Telescope (scheduled to launch in 2018) will be yet another milestone along the trajectory that began with Copernicus over 500 years ago, as we will soon peer into the furthest reaches of outer space and back in time to the 'Big Bang' 13 billion years ago when the universe was created.

This mini-documentary traces the contributions of Aristotle, Ptolemy, Copernicus, Brahe, Kepler and Galileo to our understanding of the motions of the stars and planets. The mini-documentary also shows how the accepted view of the universe gradually shifted from a geocentric (Earth-centered) to a heliocentric (Sun-Centered) view of the solar system with planets moving along elliptical orbits.
