This video has two sets of pictures: one set shows some of the Moroccan people during the Green March. The Green March was a mass demonstration in November 1975, coordinated by the Moroccan government, to force Spain to hand over the Western Sahara to Morocco. The demonstration of some 350,000 Moroccans advanced several miles into the Western Sahara territory, escorted by nearly 20,000 Moroccan troops. Nevertheless, the events quickly escalated into a fully waged war between Morocco and the militia's of the Polisario, the Western Sahara War, which would last for 16 years. Morocco later gained control over its former Western Sahara, and still does today. The other set of pictures shows: Mohammed Zerktouni is one of the Moroccan freedom fighters during the french protectorate. He organized several movements to fight the french and one day the french police stormed his house and he swallowed a poisonous pill to kill himself. Allal Ben Abdellah was a friend of my family. He knew our father Mohamed Cherkaoui the man filmed in the back of the video. Allal gave his life for Morocco as much as Mohammed Zerktouni did. He took a knife and went to kill Ben Aarafa because Ben Aarafa was put by the french to replace King Mohamed V who was exiled to Madagascar. Mohammed Ben Aarafa, or Ben Arafa (1889 - 1976) was a distant relative of Sultan Mohammed V of Morocco (Arabic: محمد بن عرفة بن محمد‎). Ben Aarafa was installed in August 1953, he abdicated in October 1955, while Mohammed V was still in exile. Protests against Ben Aarafa helped lead to Moroccan independence, which was agreed to between France and Mohammed V in 1955. He died in 1976 in France. Another great Moroccan is Boujmi3 Hagour. He is a member of the band that is playing in this video. The band is called Nass El Ghiwane. This band has changed so many lives. In facts, they influenced famous American director, Martin Scorsese. He said that in one of his videos. This band started from a poor neighborhood in Casablanca and created an original Moroccan art and music that probably no Moroccan has created before. Boujmi3 died young, at age 27. His voice is the soprano you are hearing in this song. He will never be forgotten as much as his band member Mohamed Batma. They both died at young age-- God bless them both. There is also a picture of two Moroccan heros who in the picture are sitting on a chair each and about to be shot by the french soldiers. Moulay Taher El Alaoui and Ahmed Rachidi. Ahmed Rachidi is wearing a black suite with a white shirt and Moulay Taher El Alaoui is wearing black pants and an off- white shirt. The soldiers made them sit in chairs, facing the squad. They walk away from them and leave them exposed. The soldiers – at least ten of them - ready themselves. Some are standing and others are crouching and adjusting their rifles. One soldier, who is holding two bands in his hand, put one band around Moulay Taher El Alaoui’s head, covering his eyes, and after he finishes he goes to do the same to Ahmed Rachidi. Ahmed Rachidi told the soldier that he doesn’t want that band to cover his eyes. He told him Let me see once more the blue sky of my country. The soldiers killed both of them tied in their chairs. There is also a picture Maryam Hassouni, a Dutch Moroccan actress. She is famous in Holland and she is proud to be Moroccan. The two Cherkaoui kids are nicknamed Kuka and Kuka. Those are not their real first names. Finally, the last man on the picture, Mohamed Cherkaoui, is our father. During the french protectorate he used to lend his cars to the freedom fighters as get-away cars. Freedom fighters used to gathers in his house before their operations. Our mother told us this.
