Historically in Yorkshire's West Riding, the history of Leeds can be traced to the 5th century when the name referred to a wooded area of the Kingdom of Elmet. The name has been applied to many administrative entities over the centuries. It changed from being the appellation of a small manorial borough in the 13th century, through several incarnations, to being the name attached to the present metropolitan borough. In the 17th and 18th centuries Leeds became a major centre for the production and trading of wool. Then, during the Industrial Revolution, Leeds developed into a major mill town; wool was the dominant industry but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were important. From being a compact market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century. The main built-up area sub-division has a population of 474,632 (2011), and the City of Leeds metropolitan borough of which it is a part which has an estimated population of 757,700 (2011).
East Street Market also known locally as 'The Lane', or 'East Lane', is a busy street market in Walworth in South London. It is large and vibrant and is good for African and Caribbean fruit and vegetables, material and household goods.
East Street is in the London Borough of Southwark and is between Walworth Road on the western side and the Old Kent Road on the Eastern side.
The market runs down East Street from the junction with Walworth Road to Dawes Street, passing East Street Baptist Church and a multitude of shops. The main entrance to the market is from Walworth Road. A bus stop on Walworth road serves the market, with a large number of buses arriving from Elephant and Castle or Camberwell Green. These include bus numbers 12, 35, 40, 45, 68, 148, 171, 176 and 468.
There has been street trading in the Walworth area since the 16th Century, when farmers rested their livestock on Walworth Common before continuing to the city. During the industrial revolution, stalls lined the whole of the Walworth Road, but the market has only been officially running since 1880.
A city centre (or city center) is the commercial, cultural and often the historical, political and geographic heart of a city.
The city centre is the (often historical) area of a city where commerce, entertainment, shopping and political power are concentrated. The term is commonly used in many English-speaking countries and has direct equivalents in many other languages. However, notably, in the United States, the term "downtown" is commonly used to denote a city centre, and in Canada the terms "city centre" and "downtown" are used interchangeably. In Australia, the term "Central Business District" is widely used to refer to the city centre, but usage of the term "City Centre" is increasing, especially in Melbourne.
In many cities, the Central Business District (CBD) is within the city centre, but the concept "city centre" differs from the CBD. The concept of the "CBD" revolves solely around economic and financial power, but the "city centre" also includes historical, political and cultural factors. A clear example is Paris: La Défense is the central business district of Paris, but it is not the city centre. In most larger and/or older cities, the CBD and the city centre will only partially overlap, if at all.
The River Aire is a major river in Yorkshire, England, 71 miles (114 km) in length. Part of the river below Leeds is canalised, and is known as the Aire and Calder Navigation.
The Aire starts its journey at Malham Tarn It becomes a subterranean stream at 'Water Sinks' about 1 mile (1.6 km) before the top of Malham Cove, it then flows underground to Aire Head, just below Malham, in North Yorkshire, and then flows through Gargrave and Skipton. After Cononley, the river enters West Yorkshire where it passes through the former industrial areas of Keighley, Bingley, Saltaire and Shipley. It then passes through Leeds and on to the villages of Swillington and Woodlesford. At Castleford is the confluence of the Aire and Calder; just downstream of the confluence was the ford where the ancient British road, used by the Romans, crossed on its way north to York. The river re-enters North Yorkshire near Knottingley and in its lower reaches forms part of the boundary between North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

After several days of heavy rain on already saturated ground, the River Aire (like many rivers in Northern England) broke its banks in several places in Leeds city centre (as well as elsewhere). This film was taken from a walk beginning at 15:40 next to Leeds Railway Station on Princes Square and ending just shortly after 18:20 on East Street (A61). The film features views of the River Aire at full flow and in flood: at Leeds Station Southern Entrance; from Victoria Bridge; from behind Asda House; on Meadow Lane; on Water Lane; at Bridge End; from Leeds Bridge; from Riverside Court; from Centenary Bridge; at Brewery Place; along Dock Street; from behind Oracle; from Crown Point Bridge; along East Street; through Turlow Court; and most dramatically at the junction of East Street (A61) an...

"What if you knew when you were going to die... like the exact moment. Would you change what you're doing today? Would you think about the hours you’ve wasted staring at screens and watching other people live their lives? Would you feel anxious? Imagine you knew the exact amount of time you had left right now... Would you spend more of it doing the things you love? Would you draft up and act out your grand plans? Would you go on the adventures you’ve dreamt of as a kid? Would you get off your ass and knock down your walls with the drive and courage to chase your dreams? You’ve only got so many days… What have you done with the last 365? What if you could control how fast time goes? You already know that months fly by when you’re living every day the same. And you also know those special ...
Seemingly very modern, in fact you can still walk Leeds's medieval streets. In this short video, Geoff Druett walks around the city centre pointing out the Town Hall, Civic Hall, Briggate, arcades and the old Cloth Halls. It includes a visit inside the Corn Exchange and ends by the river Aire close-to the Royal Armouries. So, in six minutes you have a comprehensive guide and history to the city!
