Cycling

Cycling, also called bicycling or biking, is the use of bicycles for transport, recreation, exercise or sport. Persons engaged in cycling are referred to as "cyclists", "bikers", or less commonly, as "bicyclists". Apart from two-wheeled bicycles, "cycling" also includes the riding of unicycles, tricycles, quadracycles, recumbent and similar human-powered vehicles (HPVs).

Bicycles were introduced in the 19th century and now number approximately one billion worldwide. They are the principal means of transportation in many parts of the world.

Cycling is widely regarded as a very effective and efficient mode of transportation optimal for short to moderate distances.

Bicycles provide numerous benefits in comparison with motor vehicles, including the sustained physical exercise involved in cycling, easier parking, increased maneuverability, and access to both roads, bike paths and rural trails. Cycling also offers a reduced consumption of fossil fuels, less air or noise pollution, much reduced traffic congestion. These lead to less financial cost to the user as well as to society at large (negligible damage to roads, less road area required). By fitting bicycle racks on the front of buses, transit agencies can significantly increase the areas they can serve.

Don't go into the red! Pace yourself, don't go flat out at the bottom. 2. Under gearing, spin to win is all well and good, but spinning at a very high cadence is simply not efficient. 3. Over gearing. You may damage your knees, and simply you are not mechanically efficient when grinding a big gear. Plus, you run the risk of actually coming to a standstill if the gradient is severe enough! 4. Shifting under load. Make sure you change gear at the right time, a poorly timed shift can result in a jammed chain due to the torque involved. 5. Climbing on the tops. Don't climb out of the saddle on the tops of the handlebars, it is very twitchy and you don't have as much control. 6. Eating. Avoid stuffing lots of energy food into your mouth on a climb. You will be unable to take in enough oxygen as the food is blocking it's passage. Those are just some mistakes to avoid! Urbandaddy asked us to create an installation for the E2NY Music and Arts festival this summer. We proposed a head to head bike race inspired by Goldsprints, but with more of a design focus. We mapped forests, foxbears and orbs to the speed of the bikes, giving the riders a sense of their speed. Riders face off against friends, enemies and strangers to see who can ride the farthest in 60 seconds. The faster the cyclist, the more environments and creatures they unlock. A lucky few even made it into space, and one guy puked.
