Poland (Polish: Polska [ˈpɔlska]), officially the Republic of Poland (Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska, listen ), is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometres (120,726 sq mi), making it the 71st largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. With a population of over 38.5 million people, Poland is the 34th most populous country in the world, the 8th most populous country in Europe and the sixth most populous member of the European Union, as well as the most populous post-communist member of the European Union. Poland is a unitary state divided into 16 administrative subdivisions.
The establishment of a Polish state can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. The Commonwealth ceased to exist in the years 1772–1795, when its territory was partitioned among Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence (as the Second Polish Republic) at the end of World War I, in 1918.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲɛtskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪsˈtʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР, tr. SSSR) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з, tr. Sovetskij Soyuz; IPA: [sɐ'vʲetskʲɪj sɐˈjʉs]), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.

The Invasion of Poland, also known as the September Campaign, or the 1939 Defensive War in Poland (Polish: Kampania wrześniowa or Wojna obronna 1939 roku), and alternatively the Poland Campaign (German: Polenfeldzug) or Fall Weiss in Germany (Case White), was a joint invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the Free City of Danzig, the Soviet Union, and a small Slovak contingent, that marked the beginning of World War II in Europe. The German invasion began on 1 September 1939, one week after the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, while the Soviet invasion commenced on 17 September following the Molotov-Tōgō agreement that terminated the Russian and Japanese hostilities in the east on 16 September. The campaign ended on 6 October with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of Poland under the terms of the German-Soviet Frontier Treaty.
German forces invaded Poland from the north, south, and west the morning after the Gleiwitz incident. As the Wehrmacht advanced, Polish forces withdrew from their forward bases of operation close to the Polish–German border to more established lines of defence to the east. After the mid-September Polish defeat in the Battle of the Bzura, the Germans gained an undisputed advantage. Polish forces then withdrew to the southeast where they prepared for a long defence of the Romanian Bridgehead and awaited expected support and relief from France and the United Kingdom. Those two countries had pacts with Poland and had declared war on Germany on 3 September, though in the end their aid to Poland in the September campaign was very limited.

The invasion of Poland gave rise to modern warfare that was literally powered by the internal combustion engine. Blitzkrieg (German, "lightning war" listen is an anglicised word describing all-motorised force concentration of tanks, infantry, artillery, combat engineers and air power, concentrating overwhelming force at high speed to break through enemy lines, and, once the lines are broken, proceeding without regard to its flank. https://www.expedia.com/Warsaw.d178317.Destination-Travel-Guides For centuries Warsaw has been a center of refinement and knowledge. Its strategic position has also made it one of the most invaded countries in Europe. Shaped by history’s defining events, World War Two, and the closing of the Iron Curtain, Warsaw is a survivor, and has risen from the ashes of war and the shackles of Communism. Its true heart is its Old Town, the site of the Warsaw Uprising, one of the most heroic resistance actions ever seen against the nazis. After the war much of it, such as the opulent Royal Castle, was painstakingly rebuilt. One of the few statues not destroyed by the German army, is the mermaid Syrena, the symbol and protector of Warsaw. Visit St Johns Cathedral and St Anne’s Church, whose interio...

This is a video I made during my trip to Poznan in Poland. I was definitely surprised by how beautiful the city was. There are so many lovely and quaint small towns throughout Poland that I don't think I'll ever be able to visit them all. Although I only had a few days in Poznan I immediately fell in love with the city and since my trip I've really wanted to go back. There are a ton of different things to do in Poznan and it's arguably one of the most beautiful small towns in Poland. Getting to Poznan is really easy, especially with Polski Bus, and it's easily accessible from Krakow and Warsaw as well as other smaller towns Gdansk and Wroclaw. Poznan is one of my favorite places in Poland so far and I highly recommend you check it out. Looking for somewhere to stay in Poznan? Si...

The German invasion began on 1 September 1939, one week after the signing of the Molotov–Ribben...
Made in the immediate post-WWII era by famed filmmaker Julien Bryan, POLAND THE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE shows the nation of Poland as it emerged from the war, with the nation digging itself out of the ruins of conflict and trying to re-establish itself. The film can in some ways be seen as an appeal to the American people and the West for assistance in assuring that the nation would be permitted to be free, after six long years of terrible struggle. Unfortunately the hopeful sentiments echoed in the narration would soon by crushed by the Communist party and Soviets. The film is notable for showing many scenes of agriculture and commerce from before and after WWII, including shots of the Polish peasantry and their handicrafts, religious ceremonies, dancing, and more. Poland at this time ...

Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The Unknown War The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force, the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during 1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives. On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks. In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fough...

The Katyn massacre of "Polish nationalists and counter-revolutionaries" had been blamed on the Germans until Boris Yeltsin released a secret memo from Soviet archives dated 5 March 1940 in which Stalin authorised the execution of 25 700 Poles from Kozelsk, Ostashkov and Starobels camps, and from certain prisons of Western Ukraine and Belarus. In this documentary, Polish and Russian historians, investigators and film makers reconstruct the Katyn wood massacre from the available evidence.

Tuesday, October 22, 2013 | 7pm YIVO Institute for Jewish Research Book Talk Antony Polonsky, Brandeis University For centuries, Poland and Russia formed the heartland of the Jewish world. Until World War II, this area was home to over forty percent of world Jewry: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland, and nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of American and European Jews originate from Eastern Europe, the history of this life and civilization is not well known, or has been reduced to a story of persecution and martyrdom. In his masterful three-volume history, 'The Jews in Poland and Russia: 1350 to the Present Day', Polonsky avoids sentimentalism and mythologizing, and provides a comprehensive and detailed account of this great civi...
