The Upper Barrakka Gardens (Il-Barrakka ta' Fuq) is a public garden in Valletta, Malta. It offers a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour.
Valletta's most beautiful park on the bastion of St Peter and St Paul created already existed in 1775 and is the highest and most impressive point of the city walls. It offers a magnificent view over the Grand Harbour and the old towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa, at the shipyard as well as the lower-lying parts the capital. In the park there are several statues, and a successful sculpture of the Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino, entitled "The street boys."The garden was the gift of an eighteenth-century knight. The Grand Harbour (in Maltese: Il-Port il-Kbir) is a natural harbour on the island of Malta. It has been used as a harbour since at least Phoenician times. The natural harbour has been greatly improved with extensive docks and wharves, and has been massively fortified.
The harbour mouth faces north east and is bounded to the north by St Elmo's Point and further sheltered by an isolated breakwater and is bounded to the south by Ricasoli Point. Its north west shore is formed by the Scibarras peninsula which is largely covered by the city of Valletta and its suburb Floriana.
This peninsula also divides Grand Harbour from a second parallel natural harbour, Marsamxett Harbour. The main waterway of Grand Harbour continues inland almost to Marsa. The south eastern shore of the harbour is formed by a number of inlets and headlands, principally Rinella Creek, Kalkara Creek, Dockyard Creek, and French Creek, which are covered by Kalkara and the Three Cities: Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea.
History: Grand Harbour was the base for the Knights of St John for 268 years, and after their departure became a strategic base for the British for a further 170 years. It was the site in the late 16th century of a devastating tornado that killed 600 people and destroyed a shipping armada. The area was the scene of much of the fighting in the First Siege of Malta when the Turks attempted to eject the Knights of St John.
The whole area was savagely bombed during the Second Siege of Malta during World War II, as the docks and military installations around the port were legitimate targets for Axis bombers. However collateral damage wrecked much of Valletta and The Three Cities, and caused large numbers of civilian casualties.
The harbours and docks are still active but with the departure of the British Military the harbour lost much of its military significance. A considerable part of Malta's commercial shipping is now handled by the new free port at Kalafrana, so the harbour is much quieter than it was in the first half of the 20th century. Info - wikipedia

A walk around the tip of Valletta beneath Fort St. Elmo and the massive fortifications, from Marsamxett Harbour to the Grand Harbour. Starting at the Auberge de Baviere and accessing the coast beneath the English Curtain through the Jews' Sally Port. On the way visiting the new breakwater bridge and observing harbour tug boats guiding large ships into and out of the magnificent Grand Harbour. We visit also the Siege Memorial Bell overlooking the Grand Harbour above St. Christopher Bastion. We finally ride the brand new lift from Lascaris Wharf up the height of St. Peter and St. Paul Bastion to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

Harbor
A harbor or harbour (see spelling differences), or haven, is a body of water where ships, boats and barges seek shelter from stormy weather, or are stored for future use. Harbors and ports are often confused with each other. A port is a facility for loading and unloading vessels; ports are often located in harbors.
Harbors can be natural or artificial. An artificial harbor can have deliberately constructed breakwaters, sea walls, or jettys, or they can be constructed by dredging, which requires maintenance by further periodic dredging. An example of an artificial harbor is Long Beach Harbor, California, which was an array of salt marshes and tidal flats too shallow for modern merchant ships before it was first dredged in the early 20th century.
In contrast, a natural harbor is surrounded on several sides by prominences of land. Examples of natural harbors include Sydney Harbour, Australia and San Francisco Bay, California.
Artificial harbors
Artificial harbors are frequently built for use as ports. The oldest artificial harbor known is the Ancient Egyptian site at Wadi al-Jarf, on the Red Sea coast, which is at least 4500 years old (ca. 2600-2550 BC, reign of King Khufu). Valletta
Valletta (/vəˈlɛtə/; Maltese pronunciation: [ˈvɐlɛ.tɐ]) is the capital city of Malta, colloquially known as Il-Belt (IPA: [ˈil.bɛlt]; English: The City) in Maltese. Geographically, it is located in the South Eastern Region, in the central-eastern portion of the main island of Malta having its western coast with access to the Marsamxett Harbour and its eastern coast in the Grand Harbour. The historical city has a population of 6,444 as of March 2014, while the metropolitan area around it has a population of 393,938. Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe.
Valletta contains buildings from the 16th century onwards, built during the rule of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as Knights Hospitaller. The city is essentially Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected areas, though World War II left major scars on the city, particularly the destruction of The Royal Opera House. The City of Valletta was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.

The Grand Harbour was the base for the Knights of St John for 268 years, and after their departure became a strategic base for the British for a further 170 years. It was the site in the late 16th century of a devastating tornado that killed 600 people and destroyed a shipping armada. The area was the scene of much of the fighting in the First Siege of Malta when the Turks attempted to eject the Knights of St John. The whole area was savagely bombed during the Second Siege of Malta during World War II, as the docks and military installations around the port were legitimate targets for Axis bombers. However collateral damage wrecked much of Valletta and The Three Cities, and caused large numbers of civilian casualties. The harbours and docks are still active but with the departure of the British Military the harbour lost much of its military significance. A considerable part of Malta's commercial shipping is now handled by the new free port at Kalafrana, so the harbour is much quieter than it was in the first half of the 20th century. -

Starting at the Auberge de Baviere and accessing the coast beneath the English Curtain through the Jews' Sally Port. On the way visiting the new breakwater bridge and observing harbour tug boats guiding large ships into and out of the magnificent Grand Harbour. We visit also the Siege Memorial Bell overlooking the Grand Harbour above St. Christopher Bastion. We finally ride the brand new lift from Lascaris Wharf up the height of St. Peter and St. Paul Bastion to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

The harbour mouth faces north east and is bounded to the north by St Elmo's Point and further sheltered by an isolated breakwater and is bounded to the south by Ricasoli Point. Its north west shore is formed by the Scebarras peninsula, which is largely covered by the city of Valletta and its suburb Floriana. This peninsula also divides Grand Harbour from a second parallel natural harbour, Marsamxett Harbour. The main waterway of Grand Harbour continues inland almost to Marsa. The south eastern shore of the harbour is formed by a number of inlets and headlands, principally Rinella Creek, Kalkara Creek, Dockyard Creek, and French Creek, which are covered by Kalkara and the Three Cities: Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea.
The Grand Harbour was the base for the Knights of St John for 268 years, and after their departure became a strategic base for the British for a further 170 years. It was the site in the late 16th century of a devastating tornado that killed 600 people and destroyed a shipping armada. The area was the scene of much of the fighting in the First Siege of Malta when the Turks attempted to eject the Knights of St John. The whole area was savagely bombed during the Second Siege of Malta during World War II, as the docks and military installations around the port were legitimate targets for Axis bombers. However collateral damage wrecked much of Valletta and The Three Cities, and caused large numbers of civilian casualties.
The harbours and docks are still active but with the departure of the British Military the harbour lost much of its military significance. A considerable part of Malta's commercial shipping is now handled by the new free port at Kalafrana, so the harbour is much quieter than it was in the first half of the 20th century.

Valletta's most beautiful park on the bastion of St Peter and St Paul created already existed in 1775 and is the highest and most impressive point of the city walls. It offers a magnificent view over the Grand Harbour and the old towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa, at the shipyard as well as the lower-lying parts the capital. History: Grand Harbour was the base for the Knights of St John for 268 years, and after their departure became a strategic base for the British for a further 170 years. It was the site in the late 16th century of a devastating tornado that killed 600 people and destroyed a shipping armada. The area was the scene of much of the fighting in the First Siege of Malta when the Turks attempted to eject the Knights of St John.
The whole area was savagely bombed during the Second Siege of Malta during World War II, as the docks and military installations around the port were legitimate targets for Axis bombers. However collateral damage wrecked much of Valletta and The Three Cities, and caused large numbers of civilian casualties.
The harbours and docks are still active but with the departure of the British Military the harbour lost much of its military significance. A considerable part of Malta's commercial shipping is now handled by the new free port at Kalafrana, so the harbour is much quieter than it was in the first half of the 20th century. Info - wikipedia

We finally ride the brand new lift from Lascaris Wharf up the height of St. Peter and St. Paul Bastion to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

It was all very interesting but incoherent and full of static noise. So I've cleaned it up and now it's 1h45min worth of quite exciting motorracing. Monaco fell on the same weekend as the Indianapolis 500 and as a result neither Jim Clark nor Dan Gurney entered for Monaco. The organizers and Team Lotus then got into a fight and the result was that the team withdrew - Colin Chapman had a rare talent to get into fights with the french! Dette gamle fort er utroligt spændende. Det har også været med i 2 verdenskrig. Der var adgang forbudt.Lidt ærgerligt at jeg blev fanget 2 gange. af sure vagter med sure hunde, og fulgt til dørs. Mere uhyggeligt blev det da jeg måtte erkende at jeg var faret vild under jorden. At rende rundt i den labyrint forstår man ikke helt før man selv har prøvet det. Men jeg fandt ud igen. Og vigtigst af alt. Jeg fik lavet min film.
Lidt om fortet: Fortet blev bygget af Johanniterordenen mellem 1670 og 1693. Det ligger på en halvø kendt som Gallows Point der udgør den østlige del af Grand Harbour , og nordkysten af Rinella Creek. Sammen med Fort Saint Elmo og Fort Tigne der kontrollerer adgangen til Grand Harbour og Marsamxett Havn .
I 1844 blev fortet bemandet med 500 mand. Fortets kanoner blev udskiftet flere gange mellem 1860'erne og begyndelsen af 1900'erne. Bastion nr. 2 blev bygget mellem 1901 og 1902.
Fort Ricasoli var aktiv i forsvaret af Malta under Anden Verdenskrig . Strukturelle ændringer og yderligere kanonstillinger på havsiden bastion vidner om dens fortsatte anvendelse og udvikling som et militært anlæg. I april 1942 blev porten og guvernørens hus ødelagt af tyske luftbombardementer. Meget af den indre struktur blev også svært beskadiget.

Per Einarsson http://www.ultimostile.com Here's another Ultimosile rip-off; I found some rare TV footage from the 1965 formula 1 Grand Prix of Monaco. It was all very interesting but incoherent and full of static noise. So I've cleaned it up and now it's 1h45min worth of quite exciting motorracing.
Monaco fell on the same weekend as the Indianapolis 500 and as a result neither Jim Clark nor Dan Gurney entered for Monaco. The organizers and Team Lotus then got into a fight and the result was that the team withdrew - Colin Chapman had a rare talent to get into fights with the french!
Graham Hill took pole position in his BRM with Jack Brabham second. The second row consisted of Stewart and Ferrari's number two Lorenzo Bandini while John Surtees and Richard Attwood (in a Reg Parnell Racing Lotus) shared the third row. The fourth row featured Bruce McLaren's Cooper and Denny Hulme, making his F1 debut as a stand-in for Gurney at Brabham.
The two BRMs made the best starts and so Graham Hill led Stewart for the early part of the race chased by Bandini, Surtees, Brabham and McLaren. On lap 25 Hill was coming up to lap the private Brabham of Bob Anderson which was going very slowly because of a mechanical problem. Hill had to go up an escape road to avoid hitting the backmarker and he dropped to fifth place. Stewart led for the next four laps and then had a spin at Ste Devote and dropped to fourth, just ahead of Hill. This left Brabham in the lead, the Australian having worked his way up past the two Ferraris, but he went out with an engine failure soon afterwards and so Bandini was left ahead. While this was going on Hill was making progress, having passed Stewart and then Surtees. On lap 65 he took the lead from Bandini while Stewart closed on Surtees and took third place on lap 77. Two laps later there was a dramatic incident when Paul Hawkins spun his private Lotus at the chicane and went into the harbor. He emerged unhurt.
Hill duly recorded his third consecutive Monaco victory.
