Medina (/məˈdiːnə/; Arabic: المدينة المنورة, al-Madīnah al-Munawwarah, "the radiant city"; or المدينة, al-Madīnah, "the city"), also transliterated as Madīnah, is a city in the Hejaz, and the capital of the Al Madinah Region of Saudi Arabia. The city contains al-Masjid an-Nabawi ("the Prophet's Mosque"), which is the burial place of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and is the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
Medina was Muhammad's destination after his Hijrah from Mecca, and became the capital of a rapidly increasing Muslim Empire, first under Muhammad's leadership, and then under the first four Rashidun caliphs, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali. It served as the power base of Islam in its first century where the early Muslim community developed. Medina is home to the three oldest mosques, namely the Quba Mosque, al-Masjid an-Nabawi, and Masjid al-Qiblatayn ("the mosque of the two qiblas"). Muslims believe that the chronologically final surahs of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad in Medina, and are called Medinan surahs in contrast to the earlier Meccan surahs.

To purchase the entire DVD set of the Summit Lecture Series, visit summit.org. If Islam is divinely inspired, and then, since then it has been corrupted and now we have a “crazy religion”, then the question rests not on the corruptions, but on the original religion. Is it truly divinely inspired? How do we know? That’s what I’m interested in. What did Muhammad originally teach? Did he teach peace? Did he teach violence? Does what he originally taught have anything to do with what Muslims are doing today? To get to the bottom of all this, we need to go to Islam’s origin story. Muhammad was born in 570 AD. He announced his prophethood and established Islam in 610. After he died in 632, there was an early caliphate period until 661. Until the end of this period, Sunni Muslims belie...
Ferries to Tunisia: http://ferriestunisia.com/ Tunis (Arabic: تونس, Tūnis) is the (political) capital of both Tunisia and the Tunis Governorate. It is Tunisia's largest city, with a population of 728,453 as of 2004; the greater metropolitan area holds some 2,412,500 inhabitants. Situated on a large Mediterranean Sea gulf (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette (Halq al Wadi), the city extends along the coastal plain and the hills that surround it. At the centre of more modern development (from the colonial era and later) lies the old medina. Beyond this district lie the suburbs of Carthage, La Marsa, and Sidi Bou Said. The medina is found at the centre of the city: a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and c...
Join Cara, John and their daughter Abi as they visit one of the most fascinating medinas in North Africa is found in the agricultural heartland of Morroco only 60 kms from Fez. This city was transformed from a provincial town to an imperial city virtually overnight by one of Moroccos most tyrannical rulers. The medina offers an array of architectural gems, bustling markets and a proud and industrious people who continue to ply their ancient trade handed down from their fore fathers. The Damascenerie produced here is some of the most unique art found in Morocco. All of this is found in a laid back and friendly town.
The Old City of Sana’a, which sits in a mountain valley at 2,200m altitude in Yemen, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the 11th century CE. Medieval and Islamic scholars, historians and travelers have linked Sana’a to the civilizations of the Bible and Quran. Although Sana’a has been occupied for more than 2,500 years, its city-level status began around the 2nd century BCE when it served as a post for Yemenite kingdoms and quickly emerged as a nexus of trade in the 1st century CE. Since the Saudi-led coalition involvement in the Yemen Civil War that began in 2015, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Old City of Sana’a has been the repeated target of Saudi airstrikes. On May 13, 2015 these Medina buildings were struck and destroyed. Learn more and interact with the #Culture...

Alhumdulilah Allah blessed me again to visit the city of RasoolAllah (saw) - Madina. This vlog is when I went on ZIyarah of Madina. We visited Masjid Qiblatain, Masjid Quba and Mount Uhud. My tip for Ziyarah in both Makkah & Madina would be to book it yourself. try and find a english/urdu speaking guide who will take you on the tour of Madina. This way you have your own time to do what you wish, to see the places, spend time observing these blessed places and not be rushed. In my experience the Ziyarah you get with your packages (from UK) are very rushed. The driver most of the time is Saudi and does not understand English or any other language so it is hard to communicate. The whole ziyarah is rushed and most of the time its in the Mini Van (esp in Makkah - where we were t...

Hitting the souks is a rite of passage for any Marrakech visitor, but once you’re all haggled out, there’s another corner of town beckoning, just beyond the stalls. Kaât Bennahid might be one of Marrakech’s oldest neighbourhoods, but it’s had a superstylish growth spurt recently, with hip art galleries, chic riads and slick restaurants sprouting up, geared towards a fashionable set. Travel video about destination Madinat Al-Zahra in Spain. A few kilometres outside the city of Córdoba in southern Spain lie the remains of a once legendary Moorish palace district, the Mahdinat Al-Zahra.It is believed that in around 936 A.D. the Moorish monarch, Abd Ar-Rahman The Third, ordered the construction of the huge residence. Work on the palace, the administrative sections and the gardens took more than forty years to complete. Over ten thousand workmen were involved in its construction but today little of the former splendour of this ‘Andalusian Versailles’ is apparent as only the mighty ruins of the former terraced palace have survived to the present day. Thanks to the intensive restoration and reconstruction work of recent years the buildings of the former Reception Hall provid...

Travel video about destination Meknes in Morocco. Meknes is the monumental city of the four kings' towns of Morocco whose impressive gates and powerful walls surround the old town of Medina. The 20 kilometre long town wall is one the oldest relicts of the former sovereign of the Alaouits, Sultan Moulay Ismail, who was prone to larger-than-life ideals. Also, the great silo of the Heri and Dar El-Ma's building dates back to this time, the end of the 17th century. It was designed to guarantee an adequate supply of food for the 150,000 men of the sultan's army. In the midst of the historic commercial district is one of the city's oldest buildings, the Medersa Bou Inania. The beautiful decor of its inner courtyard and walls fascinates with its overwhelming number of unusual artistic Majolika des...

Travel video about destination Marrakesh in Morocco. Marrakesh, the 'red pearl' of Morocco was founded by Yusuf ibn Tashfin in 1062. It is one of the country's four Royal Cities. Up to the beginning of the 20th century, the city was a trading centre for both the north of Morocco and the Sahara and the monarchs of various dynasties made Marrakesh their capital city. The large souks of Marrakesh's Medina are divided into numerous sections and stock just about everything known to man! In spite of the city's apparent calm, there is much activity and the traffic is surprisingly well disciplined. Marrakesh has the largest souks in Morocco. As well as shoes and clothing, they stock all the necessities of life and of course, bargaining and haggling are the norm! Daily life in the souks is domi...
The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) In this lecture, Professor Freedman introduces Islam. He begins with a discussion of its geographical context: the dry desert lands of the Arabian peninsula. The Bedouins, or nomadic Arabs of the region, lived in a tribal society somewhat similar to the Germanic tribes discussed earlier in the course. Their raids against the Byzantine and the Persian Empire, for lack of strong opposition, would lead to the Arab conquests. The second half of the lecture focuses on the life of Mohammed (570/580 -- 632) and the early years of Islam. Mohammed's revelation was one of the unity of God and a progressive interpretation of God's prophets, with Mohammed as the last of these. Early Islam was slow to differentiate itself for Christianity and Judaism, thou...
