The VIX is known as the fear index because it is based on the amount of puts that are purchased.
Why?
-The more puts that are purchased on the SP500, the higher the VIX
-When puts are high that means people are buying protection
-They think the market is going down
High v. Low VIX
-High VIX versus low VIX is relative
-It depends whether you're looking at historical or implied relativity, a high VIX can't necessarily be determined by its numerical value
-The implied VIX is the state that you are currently in
-Remember: when the VIX is high, it's time to buy; when the VIX is low, look out below
-The VIX works opposite of the market (but it's not always 1:1)
-When the VIX is high, stock prices go down because fear impacts selling to the negative side
-When the VIX is low, stock prices start to increase because there is less fear, which means stocks will eventual tumble
-It shows you how much protection people are buying with the puts

Gold under pressure ahead of the Federal Reserve announcement but according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Mike McGlone, not much will happen. “The biggest risk from the fed is if they come out ‘very aggressive’ about further interest rate hikes which is fairly unlikely,” he told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Mines & Money conference in New York. McGlone added he is really watching the volatility index — VIX — which is trading at lows from 2007, which could suggest a reversal is in order. A higher VIX would spark safe-haven demand in gold, he explained.

VIX
VIX is a trademarked ticker symbol for the CBOE Volatility Index, a popular measure of the implied volatility of S&P 500 index options; the VIX is calculated by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Often referred to as the fear index or the fear gauge, the VIX represents one measure of the market's expectation of stock market volatility over the next 30-day period.
The idea of a volatility index, and financial instruments based on such an index, was first developed and described by Professor Menachem Brenner and Prof. Dan Galai in 1986. Professors Brenner and Galai published their research in the academic article "New Financial Instruments for Hedging Changes in Volatility," which appeared in the July/August 1989 issue of Financial Analysts Journal.
In a subsequent paper, Professors Brenner and Galai proposed a formula to compute the volatility index.
Professors Brenner and Galai wrote "Our volatility index, to be named Sigma Index, would be updated frequently and used as the underlying asset for futures and options... A volatility index would play the same role as the market index play for options and futures on the index."

The VIX is known as the fear index because it is based on the amount of puts that are purchased.
Why?
-The more puts that are purchased on the SP500, the higher the VIX
-When puts are high that means people are buying protection
-They think the market is going down
High v. Low VIX
-High VIX versus low VIX is relative
-It depends whether you're looking at historical or implied relativity, a high VIX can't necessarily be determined by its numerical value
-The implied VIX is the state that you are currently in
-Remember: when the VIX is high, it's time to buy; when the VIX is low, look out below
-The VIX works opposite of the market (but it's not always 1:1)
-When the VIX is high, stock prices go down because fear impacts selling to the negative side
-When the VIX is low, stock prices start to increase because there is less fear, which means stocks will eventual tumble
-It shows you how much protection people are buying with the puts

Gold under pressure ahead of the Federal Reserve announcement but according to Bloomberg Intelligence’s Mike McGlone, not much will happen. “The biggest risk from the fed is if they come out ‘very aggressive’ about further interest rate hikes which is fairly unlikely,” he told Kitco News on the sidelines of the Mines & Money conference in New York. McGlone added he is really watching the volatility index — VIX — which is trading at lows from 2007, which could suggest a reversal is in order. A higher VIX would spark safe-haven demand in gold, he explained.
