Chessmaster is a chess-playing computer game series which is now owned and developed by Ubisoft. It is the best-selling chess franchise in history, with more than five million units sold as of 2002.
A chess title is a title created by a chess governing body and bestowed upon players based on their performance and rank. Such titles are usually granted for life. The most prestigious titles are those granted by the international chess governing body FIDE; many national chess federations also grant titles such as "National Master".
In general, a chess master is a player of such skill that he or she can usually beat most amateurs. Among chess players, the term is often abbreviated to master, the meaning being clear from context.
The establishment of the world chess body, Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), saw the creation of titles superior to the "national master" titles. In 1950 FIDE created the titles "Grandmaster" and "International Master", the requirements for which were increasingly formalized over the years. In 1978 FIDE created the lesser title of "FIDE Master".
From the beginning of recorded chess, to the establishment of the first chess organizations, the term master was applied informally, being simply a matter of popular acclaim. Strong players demonstrated their strength in play, and gained the informal reputation of being chess masters.
Jude Frazier Acers (born April 6, 1944 Long Beach, California) is a chess master, showman (simultaneous exhibitor), and chess author/writer.
Acers is best known for playing against all comers in a New Orleans downtown gazebo while wearing a red beret. A longtime resident of Louisiana, he claims to have been the first New Orleans native chess master of comparable strength since Paul Morphy.
He is also known for being a great showman, touring the country giving simultaneous chess exhibitions. He was twice the world record holder of having played the most opponents in a simultaneous exhibition. First against 117 opponents (1974, Lloyd Center, Portland, Oregon), then against 179 opponents (1976, Mid Island Plaza, Long Island, New York). The records were certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Acers barely survived Hurricane Katrina and lived in a displaced persons camp for some time. As the city recovered, he returned to New Orleans and resumed his customary chess table in the French Quarter.
Chess is a two-player board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. Chess is played by millions of people worldwide, both amateurs and professionals.
Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently. The most powerful piece is the queen and the least powerful piece is the pawn. The objective is to 'checkmate' the opponent's king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture. To this end, a player's pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent's pieces, while supporting their own. In addition to checkmate, the game can be won by voluntary resignation by the opponent, which typically occurs when too much material is lost, or if checkmate appears unavoidable. A game may also result in a draw in several ways.
Chess is believed to have originated in India, some time before the 7th century; the Indian game of chaturanga is also the likely ancestor of xiangqi and shogi. The pieces took on their current powers in Spain in the late 15th century; the rules were finally standardized in the 19th century.

This video's title pretty much says it all. I got checkmated by an opponent who used the Scholar's mate and I burst out laughing during a chess tournament livestreamed at http://twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. So much for trying to crack a poor math joke at the start of a chessgame and sort of being in premove mode. Math-minded chess master's beware! :) Surprisingly enough, the second game ended with me checkmating my opponent on the exact square and with the same piece as I got checkmated in the first game. For whatever the reason, that really pushed me over the edge with laughter. This will likely be the most candid video uploaded to this channel. Replicating such is hard to do. Hopefully it's good for a laugh or two. ★ FACEBOOK http://facebook.com/ChessNetwork ★ TWITTER http://twitter.com/Ch...
I was schooled by the best hustlers back in the day! This was actually in Washington Square Park where the late great Vinnie Livermore used to beat my ass at that same table! (This is a bonus clip from The Tim Ferriss Experiment TV show. Watch the full series here: http://fourhourworkweek.com/tv/)

Game: Waitzkin J. vs Larry Christiansen Speaker: Josh Waitzkin Theme: When you have to win *Now that we have seen these two teach some annotated games, I figure the two going head to head would be a nice treat. Having been using different chess software since my childhood, I personally haven't found a better teaching chess program than the ChessMaster series. Aside from the easy to understand tutorials, exercises, and puzzles, one of the major highlights of CM is Josh Waitzkin's annotated games. Josh's passion and teaching methods are(in my opinion) unmatched, and I felt that it had to be shared even if people don't have the program. I highly re...

This is video #23 from the "Beginner to Chess Master" playlist. What makes a bishop good or bad? The pawns! The concept of good and bad bishops, is in my opinion the most important strategic idea in the game. Your understanding of this concept will help you determine what piece exchanges are desirable, and you can begin to formulate a good middlegame strategy based around it. Make the wrong type of exchange, and you may be ultimately giving your opponent the superior minor piece! ★ FACEBOOK http://facebook.com/ChessNetwork ★ TWITTER http://twitter.com/ChessNetwork ★ GOOGLE+ http://google.com/+ChessNetwork ★ LIVESTREAM http://twitch.tv/ChessNetwork Internet Chess Club (ICC) http://bit.ly/179O93N

A documentary of the making of a replica guitar owned by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants. When I talked to Flansburgh about the guitar in July, he told me that the guitar had fallen into disrepair and needed work done on the jack. I inspired him to repair it, and he recently used it in the Cloisonné video! Some may note that the VU meter is not present on my replica. I have yet to find an exact match. The original guitar's meter is real, but is not currently hooked up to work, though someday that might change... [Update: I have found and added the same VU meter which is found in the original guitar. See https://vimeo.com/58275740 ] For additional photos, see http://portfolio.mikebuffington.net/guitar.php

To promote the website, Wuchess and RZA had a contest on YouTube for the best 8 lines about chess. Irina wasn't satisfied with her simplistic little video, so she got her friends and made this!
I created this short narrative film for a Film Maker's Bootcamp class taught at SCATV in Spring 2011. Barry Pugatch did the camera work and principal editing. Steve Barry was amazing as the demented chess master and helped me write the script one evening over Johnny Walker Black and a game of chess. Bill Trudell was "money" as sound recorder and one of Dmitri's hapless victims. This short has been nominated for 'Best Narrative Short Film of 2011' at SCATV and was broadcast on local Cable Access more than a dozen times.
