Great Britain, also known as Britain i/ˈbrɪ.tən/, is an island in the North Atlantic off the north-west coast of continental Europe. With an area of 209,331 km2 (80,823 sq mi), it is the largest island in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. In 2011 the island had a population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java in Indonesia and Honshu in Japan. It accounts for the majority of the British Isles archipelago, along with over 1,000 smaller surrounding islands, including the island of Ireland to its west.
The island is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Politically, the term Great Britain usually extends to include surrounding islands that form part of England, Scotland, and Wales.
A single Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the Union of Scotland and England (which already comprised the present-day countries of England and Wales) in 1707. More than a hundred years before, in 1603, King James VI, King of Scots, had inherited the throne of England, but it was not until 1707 that the Parliaments of the two countries agreed to form a unified state. Subsequently, in 1801, Great Britain united with the neighbouring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The state was renamed the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" after five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in the European Union. Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, it includes the island of "Great Britain" (a term also applied loosely to refer to the whole country), the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands.Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-southwest. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), the UK is the 80th-largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th-largest in Europe. It is also is the 21st-most populous country, with an estimated 64.5 million inhabitants.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its capital city is London, an important global city and financial centre with an urban population of 10,310,000, the fourth-largest in Europe and second-largest in the European Union. The current monarch—since 6 February 1952—is Queen Elizabeth II. The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The latter three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, respectively. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the United Kingdom, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation.

Pathé archive voice over: To few people in a lifetime comes the chance of seeing such a gigantic blaze as the funeral pyre of the Crystal Palace, one of the few remaining links with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Narrator: In 1936 a fire destroyed the spectacular building known as the Crystal Palace - the same building that 85 years earlier had housed the famous ' Great Exhibition' , one of the most important events of the Victorian era. On 1 May 1851 the Great Exhibition was opened by Queen Victoria. Her husband - Prince Albert - led the development of the Exhibition, which was the first of its kind. It was a bit like a giant museum, full of interesting objects from around the world. The Great Exhibition was held in London' s Hyde Park in a building that soon became known as the Cry...

The guardian 2012 year in review This was 2012 final project, by far the most exhausting, exciting, challenging, team based project I've been part this year. Starting with the premiss "Let's do something great to close 2012, challenging in technology terms, engaging in content and beautiful in design". Taking in consideration the main stories of 2012, raising from News, Technology, Culture, Ecology, Travel, Britain, War, Politics, trying to cross all desks to be summarized into an interactive representing the year. Me and the interactive team players Jonathan Richards and Robin Beitra, came up with the vertical storytelling, where we used parallax (such a popular technique used as well during 2012). We would like to see stories come together by scrolling from the user. We wanted to use al...
Documentary series in which Michael Portillo travels the length and breadth of the country by train. Portillo uses a copy of Victorian cartographer George Bradshaw's Railway Companion to compare and contrast modern Britain with that documented by Bradshaw in the 1840s, visiting recommended points of interest which would have been of interest to the Victorians. George Bradshaw was a cartographer who in 1840 became the first person to produce a comprehensive timetable and travel guide of the railway system in Great Britain, which at the time although extensive, still comprised a series of fragmented and competing railway companies and lines each publishing their own literature. The Pen Museum featured in the Birmingham to Stafford journey the second episode of the 2013 series on BBC2 and B...

I'm from a little place call great Britain
But I dunno if I love or hate Britain
These words upon my page written
Are the things that make and break Britain
See I'm from a little place call great Britain
But I dunno if I love or hate Britain
These words upon my page written
Are the things that make and break Britain
One inch to the left, to the left,
Could of been the difference between life and death,
Knife wound to the heart to the side of the chest,
Could of been one statistic less.
See sometimes great Britain ain't that great,
Kids getting stabbed at an alarming rate,
Pressed with a pattern to exonerate,
Increasingly clueless heads of state?
You see knife crime knife crime ain't about knifes,
It's about young Britain and the ways of lives,
You don't solve knife crime by taking knifes to hand,
You solve it by instilling new hopes and plans,
You've got positives though, I swear its true,
In all south east west and the midlands too.
God damn viresty, that shines right through.
Who's makes the best music in the world, we do

In a 2008 - 2009 goverment report,
Violent crime was not listed to increase
Or decrease, it was instead listed as stable.
Now what I ask you is, is stable really acceptable?
You see between 2003 and 2008,
The number of children admited into NHS hospitals
With knife wounds saw a rise of 120%
So in my eyes, 2008-2009 stability just makes that card as desenotised
But statistics can be twisted, and out of context aren't realistic
