United Nations, 19 February 2009 - The joint UN/AU mission in Darfur is the first ever of its kind. Rising insecurity in IDP camps is causing alarm. UN patrols try their best to improve security in this camp of 75,000 people.

As part of his meetings with senior UNAMID officials, state authorities, and the local community, the AU-UN Joint Special Representative, Martin Uhomoibhi, visited Zalingei, Central Darfur, El Geneina, West Darfur; Nyala, South Darfur, El Daein, East Darfur; between 2-6 May 2016.
During his visit, Mr. Uhomoibhi held formal meetings, consultations, popular conferences and discussions with a broad spectrum of Darfuri entities, including with key state authorities (Governors of States, Government of Sudan military and police officials and State security authorities) , internally displaced persons (IDPs) refugees and their representatives, native administration and community leaders (nazirs, umdahs and chieftains) as well as UNAMID staff and members of the UN Country Team in the sectors, in order to exchange views on UNAMID’s mandate and his efforts as Joint Chief Mediator in relation to the Darfur peace process.

The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) today (24 August) held a farewell parade in honor of its outgoing Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai.
The ceremony held at El Fasher stadium marked the end of the Nigerian force commanders service in the mission area leading more than 15,000 UN-AU peacekeepers in the war-torn region of Darfur.
In his speech, General Agwai paid tribute to all officers, soldiers, police and civilian personnel who lost their lives while serving the cause of peace and humanity in Darfur. He highlighted the achievements made so far, including progress made in the areas of deployment of UNAMID forces in Darfur as well as the challenges the mission in Darfur faces such as lack of critical strategic enablers in peacekeeping.

"I am leaving as a fulfilled commander, because despite all odds, I am leaving at a time Darfur is experiencing a significant reduction in the level of violence, largely due to the mission contribution in the area of civilian protection, humanitarian intervention, as well as conflict prevention and resolution at local level."
Agwai also stressed that the way forward for UNAMID was to continue developing its operational capabilities, patrol skills in particular, in order to extend UNAMIDs area of influence, citing more challenges ahead.

"I believe we have made remarkable progress in this troubled region but we still have much more to do especially with the lack of an all-inclusive comprehensive peace agreement, the general election that are coming and the referendum of 2011."
The outgoing force commander took the opportunity to introduce his successor, General Patrick Nyamvumba of Rwanda, to senior military officials and to the contingent representatives, as well as UN civilian personnel attending the farewell ceremony.
Nyamvumba acknowledged the tasks ahead but vowed he'd march on from where his predecessor had left.

General Martin Luther Agwai was appointed by the Chairperson of African Union and Secretary-General of the United Nations, arriving in Darfur in July 2007 as Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the first Force Commander of the AU-UN Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID). During his military career, he also served as Deputy Force Commander of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at UN Headquarters in New York.

Saya merasa bangga, Prajurit TNI yang tergabung dalam Satgas Batalyon Komposit TNI Kontingen Garuda XXXV-A/Unamid (United Nations Mission In Darfur) sebagai pasukan pemeliharaan perdamaian PBB, telah kembali dengan selamat dan membawa harum nama bangsa Indonesia, selama setahun melaksanakan tugas negara. Semoga rasa bangga saya ini juga menjadi kebanggaan kalian semua. Secara umum, dinilai berhasil mengemban tugas negara yang dipercayakan dunia dalam melaksanakan misi perdamaian di Darfur, Sudan, Afrika.
Hal tersebut disampaikan Panglima TNI Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo didampingi Kasad, Wakasau, Kasum TNI, Irjen TNI, Pangkostrad, Dansesko TNI, Danjen Kopassus, Pangdam VII/Wirabuana, para Asisten Panglima TNI dan Angkatan, Kapuspen TNI, Kas Kormar dan Komandan PMPP TNI saat menerima 800 Prajurit TNI Kontingen Garuda XXXV-A/Unamid dibawah pimpinan Letkol Inf M. Herry Subagyo sebagai Komandan Satgas, dalam suatu upacara militer di Plaza Mabes TNI Cilangkap Jakarta Timur, Selasa malam (12/4/2016).
"Dedikasi yang telah para prajurit tunjukkan adalah wujud komitmen Indonesia terhadap misi perdamaian dan kesejahteraan dunia yang secara langsung dapat memperbesar kredibilitas Indonesia dan TNI di forum internasional, serta memperbesar kemampuan melobi dan posisi tawar Indonesia dalam percaturan politik dunia," ujar Panglima TNI.
Dalam kesempatan tersebut, Panglima TNI menyampaikan bahwasanya Komandan Sektor Barat Brigjen Nikiema Blaise, memberi apresiasi dengan menyatakan rasa bangganya bisa bertemu dengan pasukan Kontingen Garuda dari Indonesia yang memiliki semangat luar biasa dan menunjukkan betapa tingginya semangat juang serta militansi pasukan Indonesia untuk melaksanakan tugas terbaiknya di Darfur, khususnya Sektor Barat.
Tidak hanya itu, Panglima TNI juga sudah mengetahui apa yang disampaikan oleh Force Commander Unamid Letnan Jenderal Paul Ignace Mella, yang sangat terkesan dengan performa pasukan Indonesia sejak bergabung di Unamid, dan menyampaikan suatu pujian dengan mengatakan "I am very happy to see that you have adapted so well and you are ready for the job, well done and keep it up". "Masih banyak pujian datang dari berbagai penjuru, dari berbagai perwakilan negara-negara lain di saat kalian sukses menjalankan misi di Unamid Darfur hingga akhir penugasan," ucap Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo.
"Ini merupakan bentuk pengakuan, betapa kontribusi TNI pada misi Pasukan Perdamaian Dunia begitu besar, hal ini sekaligus menegaskan kepada kita bahwa sebagai duta bangsa di dunia internasional, nama baik bangsa ada di pundak kita. Oleh karena itu, kita harus senantiasa mampu menunjukkan bahwa pasukan TNI Indonesia, memang pasukan berkelas dunia," tegas Panglima TNI.
Mengakhiri amanatnya, Panglima TNI memberikan beberapa atensi yang harus dilaksanakan : Pertama, laksanakan konsolidasi dan analisis dampak operasi di semua aspek sebelum bergabung dengan satuan dan keluarga, termasuk aspek kesehatan, karena para prajurit sekalian baru saja kembali dari daerah operasi, yang juga memiliki resiko di bidang kesehatan. "Saya minta perhatian khusus dari Kapuskes TNI, Dinas Kesehatan Angkatan dan para Komandan Satuan terkait, untuk ditangani secara profesional dengan segala kesungguhan, serta proporsional sesuai kebutuhan dan ketentuan yang berlaku," ujar Panglima TNI.
Kedua, catat dan evaluasi sekecil apapun pengalaman dan pengetahuan selama dalam penugasan di Darfur, Sudan, Afrika. Selanjutnya berikan masukan kepada Staf Operasi untuk selanjutnya di informasikan kesatuan yang akan dipersiapkan untuk berangkat. Ketiga, segera menyesuaikan diri dengan semangat dan tetap menunjukan bahwa kalian adalah satuan-satuan dan pasukan-pasukan terpilih.

UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator, Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, met the Deputy Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Adam Mohamed Hamid Alnahla, and a few other government representatives, at the Wali’s office in El Fasher, North Darfur. Mr. Uhomoibhi was accompanied by the Mission’s Deputy Joint Special Representative, Bintou Keita, and senior staff.
During the meeting, JSR Uhomoibhi commended the existing working relationship between the Mission and the government of North Darfur and expressed his desire to continue to work collaboratively with government authorities to achieve the Mission’s mandated aims. Mr. Uhomoibhi also thanked the government of North Darfur for the support they extend to the Mission.
On his part, the Deputy Wali expressed his appreciation for the JSR’s maiden visit to the Wali’s offices and commended the continuing corporation between UNAMID and the North Darfur government.
Mr. Uhomoibhi formally commenced his duties as UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative last week and held a series of meetings with government officials in Khartoum.

North Darfur
North Darfur (Arabic: شمال دارفور; transliterated: Shamal Darfor) is one of the wilayat or states of Sudan. It is one of the five states composing the Darfur region. It has an area of 296,420 km² and an estimated population of approximately 1,583,000 (2006). Al-Fashir is the capital of the state. Other significant towns include Ailliet, Kebkabiya,Kutum, Mellit (Malit), Tawilah and Umm Kadadah.
Geography
North Darfur occupies more than half of the territory of the Darfur region, and includes part of the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra). The northern part is entirely desert. To the south there is slightly more rainfall with the eastern side being plains with low sandy hills, while the volcanic Marrah Mountains occupy most of the western side of the south. In the southern portion the most important crops are millet, maize and peanuts.
North Darfur is bounded on the northwest by Libya, on the north by Northern State, on the east by Northern State and North Kurdufan, on the southeast by South Kurdufan, on the south by South Darfur, and on the west by West Darfur and the Republic of Chad.

United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur
The United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is a joint African Union and United Nations peacekeeping mission formally approved by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1769 on July 31, 2007, to bring stability to the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan while peace talks on a final settlement continue.
Its initial 12-month mandate has been extended to July 31, 2010. Its budget is approximately $106 million per month. Its force of about 26,000 personnel began to deploy to the region in October 2007. The 9,000-strong African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), which was previously responsible for peacekeeping, had completely merged into this new force by December 31, 2007.
The mandate is for a force of up to 19,555 military personnel and 3,772 police, along with a further "19 formed police units comprising up to 140 personnel each." The peacekeepers will be allowed to use force to protect civilians and humanitarian operations. UNAMID will be the first joint UN/AU force and the largest peacekeeping mission. As of December 2008, it has deployed 15,136 total uniformed personnel, including 12,194 troops, 175 military observers, 2,767 police officers, supported by 786 international civilian personnel, 1,405 local civilian staff and 266 United Nations Volunteers.

Darfur
Darfur (Arabic: دار فور Dār Fūr, English: Realm of the Fur) is a region in western Sudan. It was firstly named Dardaju (Arabic: دار داجو) when the Daju, who migrated from Meroe c.350 AD, were ruling. Then renamed Dartunjur (Arabic: دار تنجر) when the Tunjur were ruling the country and who had been replaced by the Fur recent immigrants from Dar Fartit in the Central Africa. Darfur (Dar in the name means 'place of or land of' the Fur people) was a independent sultanate for several hundred years, incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916. The region is divided into five federal states: Central Darfur, East Darfur, North Darfur, South Darfur and West Darfur. Because of the war in Darfur between Sudanese government forces and the indigenous population, the region has been in a state of humanitarian emergency since 2003.
Geography
Darfur covers an area of 493,180 square kilometers (190,420 sq mi), approximately the size of Spain. It is largely an arid plateau with the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra), a range of volcanic peaks rising up to 3,042 meters (9,980 ft) of topographic prominence, in the center of the region. The region's main towns are Al Fashir and Nyala.

UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator, Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, met the Deputy Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Adam Mohamed Hamid Alnahla, and a few other government representatives, at the Wali’s office in El Fasher, North Darfur. Mr. Uhomoibhi was accompanied by the Mission’s Deputy Joint Special Representative, Bintou Keita, and senior staff. During the meeting, JSR Uhomoibhi commended the existing working relationship between the Mission and the government of North Darfur and expressed his desire to continue to work collaboratively with government authorities to achieve the Mission’s mandated aims. Mr. Uhomoibhi also thanked the government of North Darfur for the support they extend to the Mission. On his part, the Deputy Wali expressed his appreciation for the JSR’s maiden visit to the Wali’s offices and commended the continuing corporation between UNAMID and the North Darfur government. Mr. Uhomoibhi formally commenced his duties as UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative last week and held a series of meetings with government officials in Khartoum.

"I am leaving as a fulfilled commander, because despite all odds, I am leaving at a time Darfur is experiencing a significant reduction in the level of violence, largely due to the mission contribution in the area of civilian protection, humanitarian intervention, as well as conflict prevention and resolution at local level."
Agwai also stressed that the way forward for UNAMID was to continue developing its operational capabilities, patrol skills in particular, in order to extend UNAMIDs area of influence, citing more challenges ahead.

"I believe we have made remarkable progress in this troubled region but we still have much more to do especially with the lack of an all-inclusive comprehensive peace agreement, the general election that are coming and the referendum of 2011."
The outgoing force commander took the opportunity to introduce his successor, General Patrick Nyamvumba of Rwanda, to senior military officials and to the contingent representatives, as well as UN civilian personnel attending the farewell ceremony.
Nyamvumba acknowledged the tasks ahead but vowed he'd march on from where his predecessor had left.

General Martin Luther Agwai was appointed by the Chairperson of African Union and Secretary-General of the United Nations, arriving in Darfur in July 2007 as Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) and the first Force Commander of the AU-UN Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID). During his military career, he also served as Deputy Force Commander of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at UN Headquarters in New York.

"Dedikasi yang telah para prajurit tunjukkan adalah wujud komitmen Indonesia terhadap misi perdamaian dan kesejahteraan dunia yang secara langsung dapat memperbesar kredibilitas Indonesia dan TNI di forum internasional, serta memperbesar kemampuan melobi dan posisi tawar Indonesia dalam percaturan politik dunia," ujar Panglima TNI.
Dalam kesempatan tersebut, Panglima TNI menyampaikan bahwasanya Komandan Sektor Barat Brigjen Nikiema Blaise, memberi apresiasi dengan menyatakan rasa bangganya bisa bertemu dengan pasukan Kontingen Garuda dari Indonesia yang memiliki semangat luar biasa dan menunjukkan betapa tingginya semangat juang serta militansi pasukan Indonesia untuk melaksanakan tugas terbaiknya di Darfur, khususnya Sektor Barat.
Tidak hanya itu, Panglima TNI juga sudah mengetahui apa yang disampaikan oleh Force Commander Unamid Letnan Jenderal Paul Ignace Mella, yang sangat terkesan dengan performa pasukan Indonesia sejak bergabung di Unamid, dan menyampaikan suatu pujian dengan mengatakan "I am very happy to see that you have adapted so well and you are ready for the job, well done and keep it up". "Masih banyak pujian datang dari berbagai penjuru, dari berbagai perwakilan negara-negara lain di saat kalian sukses menjalankan misi di Unamid Darfur hingga akhir penugasan," ucap Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo.
"Ini merupakan bentuk pengakuan, betapa kontribusi TNI pada misi Pasukan Perdamaian Dunia begitu besar, hal ini sekaligus menegaskan kepada kita bahwa sebagai duta bangsa di dunia internasional, nama baik bangsa ada di pundak kita. Oleh karena itu, kita harus senantiasa mampu menunjukkan bahwa pasukan TNI Indonesia, memang pasukan berkelas dunia," tegas Panglima TNI.

Hal tersebut disampaikan Panglima TNI Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo didampingi Kasad, Wakasau, Kasum TNI, Irjen TNI, Pangkostrad, Dansesko TNI, Danjen Kopassus, Pangdam VII/Wirabuana, para Asisten Panglima TNI dan Angkatan, Kapuspen TNI, Kas Kormar dan Komandan PMPP TNI saat menerima 800 Prajurit TNI Kontingen Garuda XXXV-A/Unamid dibawah pimpinan Letkol Inf M. Herry Subagyo sebagai Komandan Satgas, dalam suatu upacara militer di Plaza Mabes TNI Cilangkap Jakarta Timur, Selasa malam (12/4/2016).
"Dedikasi yang telah para prajurit tunjukkan adalah wujud komitmen Indonesia terhadap misi perdamaian dan kesejahteraan dunia yang secara langsung dapat memperbesar kredibilitas Indonesia dan TNI di forum internasional, serta memperbesar kemampuan melobi dan posisi tawar Indonesia dalam percaturan politik dunia," ujar Panglima TNI.
Dalam kesempatan tersebut, Panglima TNI menyampaikan bahwasanya Komandan Sektor Barat Brigjen Nikiema Blaise, memberi apresiasi dengan menyatakan rasa bangganya bisa bertemu dengan pasukan Kontingen Garuda dari Indonesia yang memiliki semangat luar biasa dan menunjukkan betapa tingginya semangat juang serta militansi pasukan Indonesia untuk melaksanakan tugas terbaiknya di Darfur, khususnya Sektor Barat.
Tidak hanya itu, Panglima TNI juga sudah mengetahui apa yang disampaikan oleh Force Commander Unamid Letnan Jenderal Paul Ignace Mella, yang sangat terkesan dengan performa pasukan Indonesia sejak bergabung di Unamid, dan menyampaikan suatu pujian dengan mengatakan "I am very happy to see that you have adapted so well and you are ready for the job, well done and keep it up". "Masih banyak pujian datang dari berbagai penjuru, dari berbagai perwakilan negara-negara lain di saat kalian sukses menjalankan misi di Unamid Darfur hingga akhir penugasan," ucap Jenderal TNI Gatot Nurmantyo.
"Ini merupakan bentuk pengakuan, betapa kontribusi TNI pada misi Pasukan Perdamaian Dunia begitu besar, hal ini sekaligus menegaskan kepada kita bahwa sebagai duta bangsa di dunia internasional, nama baik bangsa ada di pundak kita. Oleh karena itu, kita harus senantiasa mampu menunjukkan bahwa pasukan TNI Indonesia, memang pasukan berkelas dunia," tegas Panglima TNI.
Mengakhiri amanatnya, Panglima TNI memberikan beberapa atensi yang harus dilaksanakan : Pertama, laksanakan konsolidasi dan analisis dampak operasi di semua aspek sebelum bergabung dengan satuan dan keluarga, termasuk aspek kesehatan, karena para prajurit sekalian baru saja kembali dari daerah operasi, yang juga memiliki resiko di bidang kesehatan. "Saya minta perhatian khusus dari Kapuskes TNI, Dinas Kesehatan Angkatan dan para Komandan Satuan terkait, untuk ditangani secara profesional dengan segala kesungguhan, serta proporsional sesuai kebutuhan dan ketentuan yang berlaku," ujar Panglima TNI.
Kedua, catat dan evaluasi sekecil apapun pengalaman dan pengetahuan selama dalam penugasan di Darfur, Sudan, Afrika. Selanjutnya berikan masukan kepada Staf Operasi untuk selanjutnya di informasikan kesatuan yang akan dipersiapkan untuk berangkat. Ketiga, segera menyesuaikan diri dengan semangat dan tetap menunjukan bahwa kalian adalah satuan-satuan dan pasukan-pasukan terpilih.

UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator, Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi, met the Deputy Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Adam Mohamed Hamid Alnahla, and a few other government representatives, at the Wali’s office in El Fasher, North Darfur. Mr. Uhomoibhi was accompanied by the Mission’s Deputy Joint Special Representative, Bintou Keita, and senior staff.
During the meeting, JSR Uhomoibhi commended the existing working relationship between the Mission and the government of North Darfur and expressed his desire to continue to work collaboratively with government authorities to achieve the Mission’s mandated aims. Mr. Uhomoibhi also thanked the government of North Darfur for the support they extend to the Mission.
On his part, the Deputy Wali expressed his appreciation for the JSR’s maiden visit to the Wali’s offices and commended the continuing corporation between UNAMID and the North Darfur government.
Mr. Uhomoibhi formally commenced his duties as UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative last week and held a series of meetings with government officials in Khartoum.
