On view at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, February 3 - May 8, 2011, George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher celebrates the birth of this iconic American designer, who would have turned 100 in 2008. Organized by the Vitra Design Museum to commemorate this occasion, the exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of Nelson's work. It includes over 120 three-dimensional objects, including examples of chairs, benches, desks, cabinets, lamps, and clocks as well as over 50 historical documents, including drawings, photographs, architectural models, and films.

In this video, I build a DIY mid-century modern slatted bench modeled after the iconic Nelson Platform Bench, designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller. This is a timeless mid-century modern design that makes for a fairly simple yet rewarding woodworking project. The bench can be built from easily attainable materials, including a handful of 1x2 and 1x3 boards from any home center.

The International Space Station has maintained a continuous human presence in space since November of 2000. Upon completion of the Space Station and the retirement of the Space Shuttle, NASA's emphasis has changed from on-orbit assembly to in-space utilization of a science and engineering research laboratory. In this talk, I will discuss evolving organizational models, current opportunities and avenues by which American companies and individuals have access to the Space Station. I will also briefly summarize the operations, technology, and engineering investigations that are planned or recommended for the Space Station.
Originally from Maine, Dr. George Nelson's affiliation with NASA began in 1998 as a graduate student research fellow. He began his full time NASA career in 2001 training flight controllers and astronauts on the electrical and thermal systems of the ISS. After serving as the the configuration manager for Space Station through much of assembly, he began his current tenure as manager of the Space Station Technology Demonstration Office through which all of the engineering and technology research is conducted on the Space Station.

In recognition of this anniversary, the Vitra Design Museum presents the first comprehensive retrospective on his work: George Nelson. Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher. In this video, curator Jochen Eisenbrand talks about the person and the work of George Nelson, his many talents and the influence on the American design in the latter half of the 20th century, and the connection Herman Miller, Charles Eames and Vitra. George Nelsons office produced numerous furnishings and interior designs that became modern classics, including the Coconut Chair (1956), the Marshmallow Sofa (1956), the Ball Clock (1947) and the Bubble Lamps (1952 onwards). On display at the exhibition are Nelsons concepts for the modern single-family home during the 1940s and 1950s; his corporate design work for Herman Miller and other firms; his work as innovator in the development of the modern office; his exhibition design (for example for the American National Exhibition in Moscow in 1959); and an overview of the numerous articles and books and some of his films and slide presentations. The tune “Maitland” has been attributed to George Nelson Allen, who lived from 1812 to1871. It is most commonly set to the text of “Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone”, written by Thomas Shepherd (1693-1739). Many years later, Thomas Dorsey adapted this tune to “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” which is a favourite among many.
Played on a Berlin reed organ (pump organ), made in Berlin (now Kitchener) Ontario in 1897.
