Alberta (/ælˈbɜːrtə/) is a western province of Canada. With an estimated population of 4,196,457 as of July 1, 2015, it is Canada's fourth-most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta and its neighbour Saskatchewan were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. The premier has been Rachel Notley since May 2015.
Alberta is bounded by the provinces of British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single US state and one of only two landlocked provinces. It has a predominantly Humid continental climate, but seasonal temperature average swings are smaller than to areas further east, with winters being warmed by occasional chinook winds bringing sudden warming which moderates average temperatures.
Alberta's capital Edmonton is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, oil sands (Athabasca oil sands) and other northern resource industries.

The Calgary Zoo is located in Bridgeland, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, just east of the city's downtown and adjacent to the Inglewood and East Village neighborhoods. It is accessible via Calgary's C-Train light rail system, by car via Memorial Drive, and by bicycle and footpath via the Bow River pathway. A large portion of the zoo is located on St. George's Island in the Bow River.
The zoo is operated by the Calgary Zoological Society, an independent not-for-profit organization that is Alberta’s oldest registered charity. The AZA, WAZA, and CAZA accredited zoo was among the first in Canada to be accredited by all three associations. It is home to almost 800 animals, excluding individual fish and insects, and 130 different species. The 120-acre zoo is organized by into six distinct zones: Destination Africa, Canadian Wilds, Penguin Plunge, Dorothy Harvie Botanical Gardens and ENMAX Conservatory, Eurasia, and Prehistoric Park. The zoo is open every day except for Christmas Day.
As Canada's most visited zoo, Calgary Zoo was in 2015 recognized by TripAdvisor with its Travellers' Choice Award. The zoo has also received international recognition as one of the top zoos in the world for conservation research. In 2013, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums said "the Calgary Zoo sets itself apart as one of the top zoos in the world." In 2015 the zoo was named one of the top three most respected organizations in Alberta and one of Alberta's 10 most beloved brands.
British Columbia, also commonly referred to by its initials BC, is a province located on the west coast of Canada. British Columbia is also a component of the Pacific Northwest and the Cascadia bioregion, along with the US states of Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Alaska The province's name was chosen in 1858 by members of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1871, it became the sixth province of Canada. Its Latin motto is Splendor sine occasu ("Splendour without Diminishment").
The capital of British Columbia is Victoria, the fifteenth-largest metropolitan region in Canada, named for the Queen who created the Colony of British Columbia. The largest city is Vancouver, the third-largest metropolitan area in Canada, the largest in Western Canada, and the second-largest in the Pacific Northwest. In October 2013, British Columbia had an estimated population of 4,606,371 (about 2.5 million of whom were in Greater Vancouver). The province is currently governed by the BC Liberal Party, led by Premier Christy Clark, who became leader as a result of a leadership convention vote on February 26, 2011, and who led her party to an election victory on May 14, 2013.

We came across this abandoned Moose while heading out to our field to go deer hunting for the mid-morning. Here is what happened as we called the Conservation Officer (CO). While we waited, we had some time to do a little CSI ourselves. We found three spent casings, and put together the scene pretty accurately. The CO recovered a bullet and spent casings (fingerprints), and seeing as this is now an open investigation in WMU #230, have not revealed to much more forensic evidence. This incident took place likely between Saturday, November 13th in the evening and prior to Sunday, November 14th at 9:00 AM when we found the moose. If you have any information about this, please call 1-800-642-3880 and ask for CO: Lionel Veldkamp out of the Vegreville District. -- Added: OCT-11-2011 Albe...

At the 2013 Alberta Soil Science Workshop, Rob Dunn introduced the work beginning on a conservation offset pilot in SE Alberta. Working with farmers and ranchers, Alberta Agriculture is coordinating the pilot as it works through the economic models and land agreements to convert cropland into native pasture with habitat for SE Alberta wildlife and native plants. In exchange for this conversion, farmers and ranchers would be eligible for voluntary conservation offset payments from oil and gas firms with developments in SE Alberta. Rob Dunn outlines the framework and partners for the pilot project. Rob Dunn is an Agricultural Land Management Specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in Lethbridge, Alberta

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States. I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover's paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti. While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next po...

Bernie Schiesser Bernie grew up on a small farm about 13 km north of the town of Golden. It was here where he spent a lot of time in the forest and mountains learning about nature. The farm sold some dairy products, eggs and produce such as many small farms in rural BC in the 40's and 50’s. The income was supplemented by selling forest products. He became a professional mountain guide in 1967 and spent most summers after that until 1984 living in the alpine regions guiding and teaching outdoor skills. During this period he was responsible for more than a thousand teenagers and adults in programs which taught mountaineering and mountain travel/living in the National Parks of B.C. and in Alberta. Bernie also served as the President of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) for ...

The Hundred Year Road follows Ray Fowler and Pat McKenna on their journey as they recreate the trip from Calgary to Edmonton using Alberta’s first published road guide from 1914 as their reference. They travel in 100 year old vehicles, camping out and using only technology from the time period as they deal with rough roads, bad weather and the trials and tribulations of driving in their living museum pieces Calgary to Edmonton; In 2014 it’s a totally routine trip that thousands of people make every day. They climb into comfortable, reliable cars and take off at 110 kilometres an hour with the stereo blasting and about 3 hours later they reach their destination. But just for a moment, try to imagine that same journey one hundred years ago. Cars, or the horseless carriage as they were c...
This video’s title was supposed to be “Bow River Nymphing”. However, as we floated the Bow River with David Blair (owner of Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary, Alberta) & Terry Johnson (Head Guide at the shop) “38 Minutes” came as a result of Terry being incredibly economical with his instruction and demonstration. From the time we cracked the camera and drone cases to shoot Terry showing & discussing his Bow River nymphing set-up, through to demonstrating how and where to fish the nymphing rig (all completed with on-stream discussion/demonstration while landing three nice rainbow trout) the total time was 38 minutes. When you travel to fly fish, you always hope to meet a guide such as Terry – someone who is clear and concise with tactics that work. This is a great video to help you unders...

The Hunt, Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 5, 2011. We left our lodge early this morning to catch some of the activity that occurs from just before sunset to just after sunrise. We were lucky to see a lioness on the hunt. What was amazing to me was how she completely ignored the safari vehicles that were around her. We had seen this before with a leopard on the Serengeti. We were just part of the landscape. However, our guides told us that attitude would quickly change if anyone chose to leave their vehicles. Hence the prohibition on people leaving their vehicles while in the park. I recorded this hunt for nearly half an hour, and boiled it down to the four-and-a-half minutes you see here. As all good hunters, this lion was extremely patient, and as you can see, very intense and all busine...

Every extractive industry deeply affects the relationship between people on the land and their newly manufactured landscape. The incredibly rapid development of the tar sands in Northern Alberta is having a profound affect on the culture, lifestyle and health of the First Nations. Conversely, communities have gained employment, and access to modern health care and services. Is the stability and preservation of a culture better served through attention to traditional lifestyle or to commerce and industry?

It's one of the last bastions of Canadian wilderness: the Great Bear Rainforest, on BC's north and central Pacific coast. Home to diverse marine mammals, fish, and wildlife - from Orca and humpback whales to wild salmon, wolves, grizzlies, and the legendary spirit bear - this spectacular place is now threatened by a proposal from Enbridge to bring an oil pipeline and supertankers to this fragile and rugged coast. The plan is to pump over half a million barrels a day of unrefined bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands over the Rockies, through the heartland of BC - crossing a thousand rivers and streams in the process - to the Port of Kitimat, in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. From there, supertankers would ply the rough and dangerous waters of the BC coast en route to Asia and th...
Born and raised in the Okanagan, Dick Cannings is a biologist, birder, and book author. He has written many books on birds and the natural history of British Columbia. Like all naturalists, Dick is concerned about the plight of species at risk, and in this video, we follow him in his search for birds at risk of the Okanagan. 200 birds nest in the Okanagan, which makes it the most diverse place for breeding birds in North America. The Okanagan is also a hot spot for species at risk in Canada. British Columbia is one of only two provinces (the other being Alberta) in Canada that does not have an endangered species law. Yet the province is home to more wild plant and animal species than any other province in Canada and is also one of the last holdouts for many large mammals that once roamed m...
