KINETIC AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE

COMMISSIONED BY THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS LYON
Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The work was presented as a preview at CTM 2016 Festival Berlin and will be followed by its original presentation at the Festival of Lights Lyon in December 2016.
The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.
The installation brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for this very specific spatial laser setup. The high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software are provided by Design Studio WHITEvoid in collaboration with Kinetic Lights. This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allows for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams. DEEP WEB uses light as a tangible material to construct threedimensional vector drawings in thin air.
The work was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon 2015, and developed in cooperation with local producer Tetro. Due to the festival’s cancellation after the tragic events in Paris, Berliners had the unique chance to attend an exclusive preview before the project will be presented in December 2016 in Lyon for the Festival of Lights 2016.
The Artists:
An artist and designer working in the fields of light and installation art, media design and scenography, Christopher Bauder focuses on the translation of bits and bytes into objects and environments, and vice versa. Space, object, sound, light and interaction are key elements of his work. In 2004 he founded the multidisciplinary art and design studio WHITEvoid, which specializes in interactivity, media, interior architecture, and electronic engineering.
Bauder has brought his installations and performances to art events and spaces around the world, including Centre Pompidou Paris, MUTEK Montreal, Festival of Lights Lyon, Luminale Frankfurt, The Jewish Museum Berlin and The National Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. He is best known for his city-wide light art installation “Lichtgrenze”, created in 2014 together with his brother Marc, for the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and his large scale kinetic live shows ATOM and GRID. Both in cooperation with Robert Henke.
Alongside his numerous releases as Monolake, Robert Henke is also well known for the music, audiovisual installations and performances he has been creating under his own name since the early 90s. Due to his background in engineering and fascination with the beauty of technical objects, the development of his own instruments and algorithms has always been an integral part of his creative process. Henke also co-developed the omnipresent Ableton Live music software, which since its invention in 1999 has become the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined live performance practice.
His installations and performances have been presented at Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou Paris, PS-1 New York, MUDAM Luxembourg, MAK Vienna, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and at countless festivals.

GRID
Reexamining the nature-technology relationship
22 000 visitors saw the GRID performance by Christopher Bauder (WHITEvoid) and Robert Henke (Monolake) produced by TETRO, at the Fête des Lumières Light Art Festival 2013 in Lyon.
GRID is an audio-visual live performance combining kinetic lights with live electronic music. Kinetic lights form a huge suspended maze, which consists of 50 motorized LED-rod triangles covering over 200 square meters. GRID hovers above the spectators, its triangles constantly change position and color in direct response to a live-generated music track. Each and every sound triggers a visual impulse and produces visual alterations of GRID.
GRID is an innovative, artistic way of questioning the relationship between nature and technology. It started as 3D computer simulation and was molded into a massive, real-life installation. Suddenly, computer-generated objects and surfaces appear in physical space. Corresponding music makes GRID feel even more real, almost like a breathing organism. Nature and technology conflate before the eyes of spectators.
The light installation has complex design and technical features. GRID was designed to look weightless yet monumental. Two interconnected computers run Ableton Live and Kinetic Lights software based on the Touchdesigner platform. The musical software takes the lead and triggers every visual element and variable. Every performance is entirely unique. Audio-visual combinations are created on the spot, reflecting the tension between nature and technology.
The music score, composed by Robert Henke (Monolake), was in Lyon contrasted by a local choir "L´Hostel Dieu". The choir started the show by performing Johann Sebastian Bach (arranged by Knut Nystedt and directed by Franck-Emmanuel Comte) accompanied by a subtle light show. The echo of the choir was then fused together with electronic sounds, ultimately culminating in purely electronic music. The goal of the music was to shape emotions and infuse life in the mechanical works of this highly technological installation.

Christopher Bauder
Christopher Bauder (born 1973 in Stuttgart) is a German interaction designer and media artist who lives and works in Berlin. The main focus of his projects is the translation of digital information (bits and bytes) into objects and environments and vice versa.
Biography
Christopher Bauder studied in the digital class at the Berlin University of the Arts and graduated in 2003. This is when he started working in the field of interactive installation art and design. For his interactive installation ToneLadder he received the Newcomer Award “Multimedia Transfer Award”. In 2005 he was granted a Berlin Postgraduate Fund to realise his interactive art installation BUGS. In 2004 Christopher Bauder founded the design studio WHITEvoid interactive art & design. The studio operates at the interface between art, design and technology. Space, object, sound and interaction are the key elements of all works. The installations and products are created for museums, exhibitions and trade fairs, festivals, concerts and nightclubs and gained worldwide recognition.

Robert Henke
Robert B. Henke (born 1969) is a German computer music artist working in the fields of audiovisual installation, music and performance. He was born in Munich, Germany, and lives in Berlin.
Coming from an engineering background, Henke is fascinated by the beauty of technical objects. Developing his own instruments and algorithms is an integral part of his creative process. His materials are computer generated sound and images, field recordings, photography and light; transformed, re-arranged and modulated by mathematical rules, real time interaction and controlled random operations. Many of his works use multiple channels of audio or are specifically conceived for unique locations and their individual properties. For the past few years, he has been exploring the artistic usage of high power lasers in his installations and performances.
Robert Henke is also a co-developer of the music software Ableton Live, alongside Gerhard Behles.
Since 1995 he has produced electronic music under the name of Monolake, (originally founded in collaboration with Gerhard Behles).

Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Constructed by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany), starting on 13 August 1961, the Wall completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin until government officials opened it in November 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and was completed in 1992. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the Wall was erected to protect its population from fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state in East Germany. In practice, the Wall served to prevent the massive emigration and defection that had marked East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period.

GRID Reexamining the nature-technology relationship 22 000 visitors saw the GRID performance by Christopher Bauder (WHITEvoid) and Robert Henke (Monolake) produced by TETRO, at the Fête des Lumières Light Art Festival 2013 in Lyon. Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The work was presented as a preview at CTM 2016 Festival Berlin and will be followed by its original presentation at the Festival of Lights Lyon in December 2016.
The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.
The installation brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for this very specific spatial laser setup. The high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software are provided by Design Studio WHITEvoid in collaboration with Kinetic Lights. This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allows for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams. DEEP WEB uses light as a tangible material to construct threedimensional vector drawings in thin air.
The work was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon 2015, and developed in cooperation with local producer Tetro. Due to the festival’s cancellation after the tragic events in Paris, Berliners had the unique chance to attend an exclusive preview before the project will be presented in December 2016 in Lyon for the Festival of Lights 2016.
The Artists:
An artist and designer working in the fields of light and installation art, media design and scenography, Christopher Bauder focuses on the translation of bits and bytes into objects and environments, and vice versa. Space, object, sound, light and interaction are key elements of his work. In 2004 he founded the multidisciplinary art and design studio WHITEvoid, which specializes in interactivity, media, interior architecture, and electronic engineering.
Bauder has brought his installations and performances to art events and spaces around the world, including Centre Pompidou Paris, MUTEK Montreal, Festival of Lights Lyon, Luminale Frankfurt, The Jewish Museum Berlin and The National Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. He is best known for his city-wide light art installation “Lichtgrenze”, created in 2014 together with his brother Marc, for the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and his large scale kinetic live shows ATOM and GRID. Both in cooperation with Robert Henke.
Alongside his numerous releases as Monolake, Robert Henke is also well known for the music, audiovisual installations and performances he has been creating under his own name since the early 90s. Due to his background in engineering and fascination with the beauty of technical objects, the development of his own instruments and algorithms has always been an integral part of his creative process. Henke also co-developed the omnipresent Ableton Live music software, which since its invention in 1999 has become the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined live performance practice.
His installations and performances have been presented at Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou Paris, PS-1 New York, MUDAM Luxembourg, MAK Vienna, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and at countless festivals.

GRID is an innovative, artistic way of questioning the relationship between nature and technology. It started as 3D computer simulation and was molded into a massive, real-life installation. Suddenly, computer-generated objects and surfaces appear in physical space. Corresponding music makes GRID feel even more real, almost like a breathing organism. Nature and technology conflate before the eyes of spectators.
The light installation has complex design and technical features. GRID was designed to look weightless yet monumental. Two interconnected computers run Ableton Live and Kinetic Lights software based on the Touchdesigner platform. The musical software takes the lead and triggers every visual element and variable. Every performance is entirely unique. Audio-visual combinations are created on the spot, reflecting the tension between nature and technology.
The music score, composed by Robert Henke (Monolake), was in Lyon contrasted by a local choir "L´Hostel Dieu". The choir started the show by performing Johann Sebastian Bach (arranged by Knut Nystedt and directed by Franck-Emmanuel Comte) accompanied by a subtle light show. The echo of the choir was then fused together with electronic sounds, ultimately culminating in purely electronic music. The goal of the music was to shape emotions and infuse life in the mechanical works of this highly technological installation.

Mauerfall LICHTGRENZE Berlin - 25 Year Anniversary Fall of the Wall
After researching, discovery and a few pre-interviews with people who were young enough to remember the evening of 9 November 1989, I realized it wasn't about one persons story or one persons thoughts. Berlin is the melting pot of diversity and free thinking. This was a celebration of humanity. Of freedom and remembrance. This light installation "LICHTGRENZE" was powerful and elegant with an emotionally charged effect. The balloons stretched the whole section of where the wall once was and on the evening of 9 November 2014, all the balloons were released as the city and the world watched. For me, getting to the Brandenberg Gate involved some wizardry in tactical climbing and scaling as well as sweet-talking the Berlin Polizei. All with my gear in hand and my atrocious German speaking skill...

"November 9, 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall. On this day the world’s eyes will look at Berlin once again.
A symbolic frontier of lights, the LICHTGRENZE consisting of thousands illuminated balloons to be lit throughout the weekend of November 9th, will be the festive highlight of the numerous events that are scheduled in Berlin throughout this year. Situated right in the heart of the city this unique and arresting light installation will trace a circa 15 km long segment of the former course of the wall that once separated Berlin in two. The light installation is based on an idea by Christopher Bauder and Marc Bauder.
Berliners and visitors are invited to take a stroll along the LICHTGRENZE. The LICHTGRENZE is highly evocative of the magnitude of the Berlin Wall, the historical significance of its fall and the joy that came with the happy ending of the division.
The 'frontier of lights' will create unique images on streets, squares and bridges, along paths and housing walls, that—formerly separated—now set the tone after 25 years: a tone that is creative, exciting, future oriented and international.
A number of events and projects refer to the anniversary of ‘25 year Fall of the Wall’ in Berlin this year and promote the overall cause with guided tours, bicycle tours, exhibits, movies, oral history, and much more.
The topics covered this Fall will range from the remembrance of the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 and the Fall of the Wall to the significance of November 9th as a ‘symbol of hope for a world without walls’."

GRID Reexamining the nature-technology relationship 22 000 visitors saw the GRID performance by Christopher Bauder (WHITEvoid) and Robert Henke (Monolake) produced by TETRO, at the Fête des Lumières Light Art Festival 2013 in Lyon. Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The work was presented as a preview at CTM 2016 Festival Berlin and will be followed by its original presentation at the Festival of Lights Lyon in December 2016.
The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.
The installation brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for this very specific spatial laser setup. The high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software are provided by Design Studio WHITEvoid in collaboration with Kinetic Lights. This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allows for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams. DEEP WEB uses light as a tangible material to construct threedimensional vector drawings in thin air.
The work was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon 2015, and developed in cooperation with local producer Tetro. The Artists:
An artist and designer working in the fields of light and installation art, media design and scenography, Christopher Bauder focuses on the translation of bits and bytes into objects and environments, and vice versa. Space, object, sound, light and interaction are key elements of his work. In 2004 he founded the multidisciplinary art and design studio WHITEvoid, which specializes in interactivity, media, interior architecture, and electronic engineering.
Bauder has brought his installations and performances to art events and spaces around the world, including Centre Pompidou Paris, MUTEK Montreal, Festival of Lights Lyon, Luminale Frankfurt, The Jewish Museum Berlin and The National Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan. He is best known for his city-wide light art installation “Lichtgrenze”, created in 2014 together with his brother Marc, for the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and his large scale kinetic live shows ATOM and GRID. Both in cooperation with Robert Henke.
Alongside his numerous releases as Monolake, Robert Henke is also well known for the music, audiovisual installations and performances he has been creating under his own name since the early 90s. Due to his background in engineering and fascination with the beauty of technical objects, the development of his own instruments and algorithms has always been an integral part of his creative process. Henke also co-developed the omnipresent Ableton Live music software, which since its invention in 1999 has become the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined live performance practice.
His installations and performances have been presented at Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou Paris, PS-1 New York, MUDAM Luxembourg, MAK Vienna, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and at countless festivals.

KINETIC AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION AND PERFORMANCE

COMMISSIONED BY THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS LYON
Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation and live performance created by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician Robert Henke. Presented in enormous pitch dark indoor spaces, Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The work was presented as a preview at CTM 2016 Festival Berlin and will be followed by its original presentation at the Festival of Lights Lyon in December 2016.
The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score by Robert Henke, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness.
The installation brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. High-end laser system manufacturer LaserAnimation Sollinger provided the technical expertise and development for this very specific spatial laser setup. The high precision motor winch systems with real time feedback and the main control software are provided by Design Studio WHITEvoid in collaboration with Kinetic Lights. This novel combination of computer controlled kinetic elements and laser systems allows for setting animated end points to normally infinite laser beams. DEEP WEB uses light as a tangible material to construct threedimensional vector drawings in thin air.
The work was originally commissioned by the Festival of Lights Lyon 2015, and developed in cooperation with local producer Tetro. Reexamining the nature-technology relationship
22 000 visitors saw the GRID performance by Christopher Bauder (WHITEvoid) and Robert Henke (Monolake) produced by TETRO, at the Fête des Lumières Light Art Festival 2013 in Lyon.
GRID is an audio-visual live performance combining kinetic lights with live electronic music. Kinetic lights form a huge suspended maze, which consists of 50 motorized LED-rod triangles covering over 200 square meters. GRID hovers above the spectators, its triangles constantly change position and color in direct response to a live-generated music track. Each and every sound triggers a visual impulse and produces visual alterations of GRID.
GRID is an innovative, artistic way of questioning the relationship between nature and technology. It started as 3D computer simulation and was molded into a massive, real-life installation. Suddenly, computer-generated objects and surfaces appear in physical space. Corresponding music makes GRID feel even more real, almost like a breathing organism. Nature and technology conflate before the eyes of spectators.
The light installation has complex design and technical features. GRID was designed to look weightless yet monumental. Two interconnected computers run Ableton Live and Kinetic Lights software based on the Touchdesigner platform. The musical software takes the lead and triggers every visual element and variable. Every performance is entirely unique. Audio-visual combinations are created on the spot, reflecting the tension between nature and technology.
The music score, composed by Robert Henke (Monolake), was in Lyon contrasted by a local choir "L´Hostel Dieu". The choir started the show by performing Johann Sebastian Bach (arranged by Knut Nystedt and directed by Franck-Emmanuel Comte) accompanied by a subtle light show. The echo of the choir was then fused together with electronic sounds, ultimately culminating in purely electronic music. The goal of the music was to shape emotions and infuse life in the mechanical works of this highly technological installation.

Der Berliner Mauerfall - jeder erzählt seine eigene Geschichte, wenn man ihn zu diesem geschichtsträchtigen Ereignis vor genau 25 Jahren befragt. Die Kulturprojekte Berlin organisierten am Wochenende vom 7. bis zum 9. November 2014 ein umfangreiches Programm zur Erinnerung an diesen bedeutenden Tag. Der Berliner Mauerfall - jeder erzählt seine eigene Geschichte, wenn man ihn zu diesem geschichtsträchtigen Ereignis vor genau 25 Jahren befragt.
Die Kulturprojekte Berlin organisierten am Wochenende vom 7. bis zum 9. November 2014 ein umfangreiches Programm zur Erinnerung an diesen bedeutenden Tag. Der Höhepunkt dieses Events war die Ballonaktion mit ihrer Darstellung der Lichtgrenze. Zur Erinnerung an den Verlauf der Berliner Mauer wurden auf 15 Kilometern im innerstädtischen Berlin 8.000 weiße, leuchtende Ballons aufgestellt. ALEX TV war an vielen ehemaligen Mauerstandorten dabei und hat ein Feature produziert – vom Erleuchten der Ballons bis zur Auflösung der Lichtgrenze. ALEX TV hat Interviews mit einigen der Ballonpaten sowie mit den Künstlern Marc und Christopher Bauder geführt, die die Idee ins Leben gerufen haben. Zudem wurden Moritz van Dülmen, der Geschäftsführer der Kulturprojekte GmbH, Zeitzeugen und weitere Personen, die an diesem Spektakel beteiligt waren, interviewt. So konnten viele spannende generationsübergreifende Geschichten rund um den Mauerfall eingefangen werden und es entstand ein Porträt, das zeigt, was den Menschen in Berlin der Mauerfall heute bedeutet und was die Lichtgrenze in ihnen auslöst.
