Stephanie: All sentences have two things in common. One is that they all have at least one subject, and least one verb. So today, I'm going to talk to you about how to find the subject for your sentence. Let's start with the shortest sentence in the Bible for an example. Jesus wept. So if we want to find the subject, which is either a noun or a pronoun, um, I suggest first finding the verb, they tend to be easier to locate.
Uh, the verb is the action of the sentence. So here, our action, is wept. Now, once we found the action we need to find our actor. Well, Jesus is the one who was weeping, so he's the actor, or the subject. Now, I'll give you another example. That's a simple sentence. It can be a little harder to find the subject, when you get into more complex sentences. So, here's an example. The crowd cheered for Lady Gaga.
Well, let's start by finding our verb. The action here is the word, cheered. So, who is our actor, or the subject? Well, it's the crowd that's cheering. So, the crowd cheered for Lady Gaga, the crowd is our subject. It's important to note, that although Lady Gaga might be the most interesting part of the sentence, she's not the subject, because she's not the one performing the action. So, I hope this helps you understand how to identify the subject of your sentence.

Pronouns are words which replace proper (specific, singular) nouns. They make longer, continual conversation or narration smoother by allowing the speaker to not have to repeat the names of people, places and things. For example, in referring to a group of friends, one would use "they" instead of listing all their names (Randy, Laura, Matt and Emily) over and over again. Pronouns are also common in shorter, everyday conversation as well.
We can also divide them into two groups: subject and object pronouns. They get their names from the parts of speech that they replace. Hence, subject pronouns replace subjects (the thing that does the verb) while pronouns replace objects (the thing that the verb is done to). These include:

You probably wouldn't know it from looking at my work, but I suffer from something like depression. It's moderate and manageable, but annoying. I tend to think things like this are over-diagnosed and more than a little bourgeois. However, I can't really deny that it affects me, and that tension makes the whole situation even more irritating. I made this hoping it would be cathartic for me and maybe a bit comforting for others who might have similar issues. It certainly was the former, here's hoping the latter works out.

English grammar
English grammar is the structure of expressions in the English language. This includes the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences.
There are historical, social, cultural and regional variations of English. Divergences from the grammar described here occur in some dialects of English. This article describes a generalized present-day Standard English, the form of speech found in types of public discourse including broadcasting, education, entertainment, government, and news reporting, including both formal and informal speech. There are certain differences in grammar between the standard forms of British English, American English and Australian English, although these are inconspicuous compared with the lexical and pronunciation differences.
Word classes and phrases
Eight types of word ("word classes" or "parts of speech") are distinguished in English: nouns, determiners, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions. (Determiners, traditionally classified along with adjectives, have not always been regarded as a separate part of speech.) Interjections are another word class, but these are not described here as they do not form part of the clause and sentence structure of the language.

Subject and object pronouns in English
Pronouns are words which replace proper (specific, singular) nouns. They make longer, continual conversation or narration smoother by allowing the speaker to not have to repeat the names of people, places and things. For example, in referring to a group of friends, one would use "they" instead of listing all their names (Randy, Laura, Matt and Emily) over and over again. Pronouns are also common in shorter, everyday conversation as well. We can also divide them into two groups: subject and object pronouns. They get their names from the parts of speech that they replace. Hence, subject pronouns replace subjects (the thing that does the verb) while pronouns replace objects (the thing that the verb is done to). On The Subject Of Depression
You probably wouldn't know it from looking at my work, but I suffer from something like depression. It's moderate and manageable, but annoying. I tend to think things like this are over-diagnosed and more than a little bourgeois. However, I can't really deny that it affects me, and that tension makes the whole situation even more irritating. Stephanie: All sentences have two things in common. One is that they all have at least one subject, and least one verb. So today, I'm going to talk to you about how to find the subject for your sentence. Let's start with the shortest sentence in the Bible for an example. Jesus wept. So if we want to find the subject, which is either a noun or a pronoun, um, I suggest first finding the verb, they tend to be easier to locate.
Uh, the verb is the action of the sentence. So here, our action, is wept. Now, once we found the action we need to find our actor. Well, Jesus is the one who was weeping, so he's the actor, or the subject. Now, I'll give you another example. That's a simple sentence. It can be a little harder to find the subject, when you get into more complex sentences. So, here's an example. The crowd cheered for Lady Gaga.
Well, let's start by finding our verb. The action here is the word, cheered. So, who is our actor, or the subject? Well, it's the crowd that's cheering. So, the crowd cheered for Lady Gaga, the crowd is our subject. Pronouns are words which replace proper (specific, singular) nouns. They make longer, continual conversation or narration smoother by allowing the speaker to not have to repeat the names of people, places and things. For example, in referring to a group of friends, one would use "they" instead of listing all their names (Randy, Laura, Matt and Emily) over and over again. Pronouns are also common in shorter, everyday conversation as well.
We can also divide them into two groups: subject and object pronouns. They get their names from the parts of speech that they replace. Hence, subject pronouns replace subjects (the thing that does the verb) while pronouns replace objects (the thing that the verb is done to). These include:
Subject pronouns:
I
You
He/She/It
We
They
Object pronouns:
Me
You
Him/Her/It
Us
Them
Examples:

You probably wouldn't know it from looking at my work, but I suffer from something like depression. It's moderate and manageable, but annoying. I tend to think things like this are over-diagnosed and more than a little bourgeois. However, I can't really deny that it affects me, and that tension makes the whole situation even more irritating. I made this hoping it would be cathartic for me and maybe a bit comforting for others who might have similar issues. It certainly was the former, here's hoping the latter works out.

Made completely in After Effects and Photoshop over the course of a few days in what seems to be my most productive week ever. Music is from The World/Inferno Friendship Society.

Subject and object pronouns in English
Pronouns are words which replace proper (specific, singular) nouns. They make longer, continual conversation or narration smoother by allowing the speaker to not have to repeat the names of people, places and things. For example, in referring to a group of friends, one would use "they" instead of listing all their names (Randy, Laura, Matt and Emily) over and over again. Pronouns are also common in shorter, everyday conversation as well. We can also divide them into two groups: subject and object pronouns. They get their names from the parts of speech that they replace. Hence, subject pronouns replace subjects (the thing that does the verb) while pronouns replace objects (the thing that the verb is done to). On The Subject Of Depression
You probably wouldn't know it from looking at my work, but I suffer from something like depression. It's moderate and manageable, but annoying. I tend to think things like this are over-diagnosed and more than a little bourgeois. However, I can't really deny that it affects me, and that tension makes the whole situation even more irritating. I made this hoping it would be cathartic for me and maybe a bit comforting for others who might have similar issues. It certainly was the former, here's hoping the latter works out. You probably wouldn't know it from looking at my work, but I suffer from something like depression. It's moderate and manageable, but annoying. I tend to think things like this are over-diagnosed and more than a little bourgeois. However, I can't really deny that it affects me, and that tension makes the whole situation even more irritating. I made this hoping it would be cathartic for me and maybe a bit comforting for others who might have similar issues. It certainly was the former, here's hoping the latter works out.

Made completely in After Effects and Photoshop over the course of a few days in what seems to be my most productive week ever. Music is from The World/Inferno Friendship Society.
