Esperanza and Teodula were sterilised without consent more than 18 years ago and are still searching for justice in rural Peru. The Quipu project - www.quipu-project.com - is their phoneline that allows victims across the country to share their shocking testimonies. These are the unwillingly sterilised women fighting for justice in Peru.
They are just two of the 300,000 Peruvians affected by the Family Planning Program promoted by Alberto Fujimori’s government in the mid-90s in Peru, which mostly targeted impoverished, rural, indigenous people. Despite several attempts to bring those responsible to justice, the crime of the forced sterilisations remains unpunished and there are still many Peruvians that denied it ever happened.
Esperanza and Teodula, together with other affected women, activists and artists, continue the fight for justice through the Quipu project. Esperanza and her local women's organisation have decided to fight for justice and create a communication project -a specially developed phoneline connected to the internet- that allows them to share their stories in their own words and be heard around the country and the world. The testimonies collected by the Quipu project have been listened to in more than 100 countries and help them to appeal to international law in their continuing search for justice.
Meanwhile, in October 2015, Keiko Fujimori (daughter of Alberto Fujimori) held a clear lead in the upcoming presidential elections despite having been investigated for corruption several times.
Esperanza and the Quipu team travel across Peru to the regions that were most affected by the sterilisation campaign - isolated, rural and impoverished villages in the Andes and Amazon. As they meet more people and hear their stories, the real scale of the campaign starts to be revealed.
This short film follows the intimate journeys of these two peasant women fighting for recognition and women’s rights in a male-dominated society, while inviting others to join them in the hope that their voices will no longer be silenced.

The movement attracted a large following on social media after two prominent cases were filmed and widely circulated. Yet the attackers received only light sentences.

HEADLINE: Death toll climbs past 500 in Peru

Rescue crews in Peru are picking through tons of rubble looking for survivors and victims from Wednesday's powerful earthquake.
The death toll has topped 500 and officials say they expect that number to continue to climb as they go through the wreckage.
That task though will take some time to complete as officials say the magnitude 8.0 quake destroyed 85 percent of one major city and left many other smaller communities in ruins.
Searchers are also going through the rubble of a church that was destroyed that was packed with hundreds for a special service.
Meantime, the relief effort is threatening to overwhelm the country.
Many of the dead still lie in the streets and family members searching for loved ones have had to unzip body bags themselves to see if they recognize the deceased.
Many of those who did survive are now living out in the streets in makeshift tent communities that lack running water and electricity.
And while international aid is starting to reach the country many in the affected regions are complaining they are not getting any of it.
The country's president is pleading for their patience and promises things will be closer to normal in the coming days.

A group of Peruvian shamans have arrived at the site of a recent plane crash south of Lima to call on the spirits of the sea to return the unrecovered bodies of the victims.
The witch doctors brought offerings of flowers, food and incense to appease the spirits which they think are holding up the souls of the dead and the remaining bodies.
An Aeroperu Boeing 757 crashed into the ocean two weeks ago killing all 70 people aboard.
So far only 14 bodies have been recovered.
A group of 20 shamans gathered at Ancon beach 50 kilometres south of Lima Monday to carry out their mission.
They marched to the shore carrying flags from various countries.
The shamans gathered to travel to the site of the recent plane crash from Aeroperu which killed all 70 people aboard.
They brought offerings to appease the spirits of the sea and to ask them to return the bodies rescuers have failed to recover.
The shamans set off in small boats belonging to local fishermen.
They gave offerings of flowers, incense, rum and food.
The witch doctors chanted and played instruments as they approached the crash site.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"I invoke at this hour, at this moment, the natural forces so that with this offering and this payment to the sea, we ask that the dead be returned to us. We make this offering for our brothers who are suffering from not seeing their loved ones. We make offerings to the sea at this moment."

The shamans believe the ocean will return the lost bodies if it is strewn with things the crash victims liked when they were alive.
One shaman had his own theory of the crash.
He said the nearby island known as Isla de las Hormigas (Island of the Ants) has a strong magnetic attraction which may have caused the Boeing 757 to lose control and crash into the ocean.
The shamans- who belong to the Peruvian Association of Folk Doctors- were accompanied by an experienced diver who made sure the offerings were made without risk.
A shaman leader said the offerings are a form of payment to the ocean.

"The souls that are here have not wished to die. That is why we today have made the respective payment with the things they have liked most so they know we are sad, that we are calling them spiritually so they can be liberated from their bodies."

Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the Norte Chico civilization in Caral, one of the oldest in the world, to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima, which included most of its South American colonies. Ideas of political autonomy later spread throughout Spanish America and Peru gained its independence, which was formally proclaimed in 1821. After the battle of Ayacucho, three years after proclamation, Peru ensured its independence. After achieving independence, the country remained in recession and kept a low military profile until an economic rise based on the extraction of raw and maritime materials struck the country, which ended shortly before the war of the Pacific. Subsequently, the country has undergone changes in government from oligarchic to democratic systems. Peru has gone through periods of political unrest and internal conflict as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

The Quipu project - www.quipu-project.com - is their phoneline that allows victims across the country to share their shocking testimonies. These are the unwillingly sterilised women fighting for justice in Peru. PERU: SHAMANS CALL ON SPIRITS AT SITE OF PLANE CRASH
Spanish/Nat A group of Peruvian shamans have arrived at the site of a recent plane crash south of Lima to call on the spirits of the sea to return the unrecovered bodies of the victims. The witch doctors brought offerings of flowers, food and incense to appease the spirits which they think are holding up the souls of the dead and the remaining bodies. An Aeroperu Boeing 757 crashed into the ocean two weeks ago killing all 70 people aboard. So far only 14 bodies have been recovered. A group of 20 shamans gathered at Ancon beach 50 kilometres south of Lima Monday to carry out their mission. They marched to the shore carrying flags from various countries. The Quipu project - www.quipu-project.com - is their phoneline that allows victims across the country to share their shocking testimonies. These are the unwillingly sterilised women fighting for justice in Peru.
They are just two of the 300,000 Peruvians affected by the Family Planning Program promoted by Alberto Fujimori’s government in the mid-90s in Peru, which mostly targeted impoverished, rural, indigenous people. Despite several attempts to bring those responsible to justice, the crime of the forced sterilisations remains unpunished and there are still many Peruvians that denied it ever happened.
Esperanza and Teodula, together with other affected women, activists and artists, continue the fight for justice through the Quipu project. Esperanza and her local women's organisation have decided to fight for justice and create a communication project -a specially developed phoneline connected to the internet- that allows them to share their stories in their own words and be heard around the country and the world. The testimonies collected by the Quipu project have been listened to in more than 100 countries and help them to appeal to international law in their continuing search for justice.
Meanwhile, in October 2015, Keiko Fujimori (daughter of Alberto Fujimori) held a clear lead in the upcoming presidential elections despite having been investigated for corruption several times.
Esperanza and the Quipu team travel across Peru to the regions that were most affected by the sterilisation campaign - isolated, rural and impoverished villages in the Andes and Amazon. As they meet more people and hear their stories, the real scale of the campaign starts to be revealed.
This short film follows the intimate journeys of these two peasant women fighting for recognition and women’s rights in a male-dominated society, while inviting others to join them in the hope that their voices will no longer be silenced.

Rescue crews in Peru are picking through tons of rubble looking for survivors and victims from Wednesday's powerful earthquake.
The death toll has topped 500 and officials say they expect that number to continue to climb as they go through the wreckage.
That task though will take some time to complete as officials say the magnitude 8.0 quake destroyed 85 percent of one major city and left many other smaller communities in ruins.
Searchers are also going through the rubble of a church that was destroyed that was packed with hundreds for a special service.
Meantime, the relief effort is threatening to overwhelm the country.
Many of the dead still lie in the streets and family members searching for loved ones have had to unzip body bags themselves to see if they recognize the deceased.
Many of those who did survive are now living out in the streets in makeshift tent communities that lack running water and electricity.
And while international aid is starting to reach the country many in the affected regions are complaining they are not getting any of it.
The country's president is pleading for their patience and promises things will be closer to normal in the coming days.

A group of Peruvian shamans have arrived at the site of a recent plane crash south of Lima to call on the spirits of the sea to return the unrecovered bodies of the victims.
The witch doctors brought offerings of flowers, food and incense to appease the spirits which they think are holding up the souls of the dead and the remaining bodies.
An Aeroperu Boeing 757 crashed into the ocean two weeks ago killing all 70 people aboard.
So far only 14 bodies have been recovered.
A group of 20 shamans gathered at Ancon beach 50 kilometres south of Lima Monday to carry out their mission.
They marched to the shore carrying flags from various countries.
The shamans gathered to travel to the site of the recent plane crash from Aeroperu which killed all 70 people aboard.
They brought offerings to appease the spirits of the sea and to ask them to return the bodies rescuers have failed to recover.
The shamans set off in small boats belonging to local fishermen.
They gave offerings of flowers, incense, rum and food.
The witch doctors chanted and played instruments as they approached the crash site.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"I invoke at this hour, at this moment, the natural forces so that with this offering and this payment to the sea, we ask that the dead be returned to us. We make this offering for our brothers who are suffering from not seeing their loved ones. We make offerings to the sea at this moment."

The shamans believe the ocean will return the lost bodies if it is strewn with things the crash victims liked when they were alive.
One shaman had his own theory of the crash.
He said the nearby island known as Isla de las Hormigas (Island of the Ants) has a strong magnetic attraction which may have caused the Boeing 757 to lose control and crash into the ocean.
The shamans- who belong to the Peruvian Association of Folk Doctors- were accompanied by an experienced diver who made sure the offerings were made without risk.
A shaman leader said the offerings are a form of payment to the ocean.

"The souls that are here have not wished to die. That is why we today have made the respective payment with the things they have liked most so they know we are sad, that we are calling them spiritually so they can be liberated from their bodies."

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco.
As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a narrow valley surrounded by pine-covered hills, it’s a stunning place with enough cathedrals, churches, museums, galleries, cafes and shops to keep the modern traveller entertained for a week. Of course with one of the world’s foremost tourist attractions lying just up the road, most of the time Cusco is busy with locals and travellers alike, but don’t let that put you off; like many other similar locations, Cusco is popular for a reason… it’s simply a beautiful place to hang out.
As the traditional thoroughfare between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the lush agricultural Sacred Valley is littered with impressive Inca ruins. Probably the most famous are the sites of Pisac – where the famous terraces rise over a thousand feet from the valley floor to the mountaintop – and at Ullataytambo. Here again the site overs a great insight into the life of the Inca nation and some great views of the Sacred Valley. There are also some pretty towns and villages to explore; you can hike, horse ride, mountain bike or even paraglide; and you can stay in some pretty special accommodation.
But of course most people travelling this way have one goal in mind, and that’s to reach the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Pichu. There are many ways to get to the sacred Inca site: you can trek along the Inca Trail, or walk staying at beautiful mountain lodges, or you can horse ride, pretty much all the way there. Wild Frontiers offers a horse riding trip through the region.
There are plenty of trains to take you to Machu Picchu, but this is the most special. The Hiram Bingham service, operated by the Belmond Orient Express, offers a great way to climb through the Andean foothills to Machu Picchu, presenting great views – either from your seat of the observation car – delicious dining and champagne! Alighting at Aguas Calientes, buses then take us the last part of the journey to the actual site itself.
Although the exact purpose and function of Machu Picchu is still a matter of conjecture, there’s no denying that for the Incas this awe-inspiring ancient city must have been a very important ceremonial site. The quality of the buildings, of the intricate terracing, and the lofty position of the citadel itself, all point towards a hugely important cultural centre. Interestingly, it was never revealed to the Spanish invaders, and was only discovered in the early 20th century when American historian, Hiram Bingham, chanced upon it while searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. Today it undoubtedly forms the highlight for most peoples’ trips to Peru.
For many that is tourism in Peru; but not for us at Wild Frontiers. For us this vast country offers much more. For a start there is the beautiful Lake Titicaca to check out, a giant inland sea, peppered by idyllic rural islands. (Use images from Bolivia) There is the picturesque town of Araquipa, back-dropped by the stunning El Misti volcano, and access point to the spectacular Colca Canyon, where you are pretty much guaranteed to see the mighty Andean condor fly. There are the quite extraordinary Nazca lines to fly above and Peru is one of the best places to visit the Amazon rainforest, where you are likely to stumble upon all manner of exotic animals. And in the country’s rarely visited northern highlands were we run one of our most successful group tours to visit, among other places, the fortress of Kuelap, and the home of the ancient cloud warriors of Chachopyas, and the newly discovered Gocta Falls.
And lastly of course there are the Peruvians themselves, whose colourful culture dates back into the mists of time, and who are as hospitable and friendly as any on the continent.

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco.
As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a narrow valley surrounded by pine-covered hills, it’s a stunning place with enough cathedrals, churches, museums, galleries, cafes and shops to keep the modern traveller entertained for a week. Of course with one of the world’s foremost tourist attractions lying just up the road, most of the time Cusco is busy with locals and travellers alike, but don’t let that put you off; like many other similar locations, Cusco is popular for a reason… it’s simply a beautiful place to hang out.
As the traditional thoroughfare between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the lush agricultural Sacred Valley is littered with impressive Inca ruins. Probably the most famous are the sites of Pisac – where the famous terraces rise over a thousand feet from the valley floor to the mountaintop – and at Ullataytambo. Here again the site overs a great insight into the life of the Inca nation and some great views of the Sacred Valley. There are also some pretty towns and villages to explore; you can hike, horse ride, mountain bike or even paraglide; and you can stay in some pretty special accommodation.
But of course most people travelling this way have one goal in mind, and that’s to reach the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Pichu. There are many ways to get to the sacred Inca site: you can trek along the Inca Trail, or walk staying at beautiful mountain lodges, or you can horse ride, pretty much all the way there. Wild Frontiers offers a horse riding trip through the region.
There are plenty of trains to take you to Machu Picchu, but this is the most special. The Hiram Bingham service, operated by the Belmond Orient Express, offers a great way to climb through the Andean foothills to Machu Picchu, presenting great views – either from your seat of the observation car – delicious dining and champagne! Alighting at Aguas Calientes, buses then take us the last part of the journey to the actual site itself.
Although the exact purpose and function of Machu Picchu is still a matter of conjecture, there’s no denying that for the Incas this awe-inspiring ancient city must have been a very important ceremonial site. The quality of the buildings, of the intricate terracing, and the lofty position of the citadel itself, all point towards a hugely important cultural centre. Interestingly, it was never revealed to the Spanish invaders, and was only discovered in the early 20th century when American historian, Hiram Bingham, chanced upon it while searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. Today it undoubtedly forms the highlight for most peoples’ trips to Peru.
For many that is tourism in Peru; but not for us at Wild Frontiers. For us this vast country offers much more. For a start there is the beautiful Lake Titicaca to check out, a giant inland sea, peppered by idyllic rural islands. Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city.
In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
The long-lost Inca bastion was uncovered from the jungle in 1911. It remains a mystery how the Incas managed to stack the heavy granite blocks that make up the city’s buildings so precisely, at high altitude.
Little is also known about how the Incas turned a multi-lingual tribal region in an empire that is now known as one of the greatest civilizations in history.

Other popular routes include Cordillera Blanca - Huaraz, Colca Canyon - Arequipa, Ausangate Trek, Salkantay trek (also spelt Salkcantay), Choquequirao trek and Inka Jungle trek to Machu Picchu - an adrenaline trip to Machu Picchu.
Trek prices can vary considerably between companies, as can their respective porters' working conditions (no pack animals are allowed, hence equipment is carried by human porters). Although there is a minimum porter wage (PEN42/day, about USD15) and maximum load porters can carry (25kg/55 lb), not all companies keep to their claims!
Peru offers a big variety of adrenaline sport such as rafting, kayaking, biking, zip line, horseback riding, surfing, ATV, motocross, paragliding, canopy, canoing, sandboarding, etc.

Although Peru has rich natural resources and many great places to visit, the poverty scale reaches 25.8% of the population. The rich, consisting mostly of a Hispanic (or "Criollo") elite, live in the cities. Nevertheless, most Peruvians are great nationalists and love their country with pride (largely stemming from Peru's history as the hub of both the Inca empire and Spain's South American empire). Also, many Peruvians separate the state of Peru and its government in their minds. Many of them distrust their government and police, and people are used to fighting corruption and embezzlement scandals, as in many countries.
The Peruvian economy is healthy and quite strong, however inequality is still common. It is indebted and dependent on industrial nations, especially China, Russia and United States. The US foreign policy decisions in recent years has contributed to a widely held negative view about the US government in Peru, but not against individual citizens.
The word gringo is used commonly but is not generally intended as offensive. The original meaning encompassed all white people who do not speak Spanish. Many people use the word gringo exclusively for Americans or American look-alikes. It's not uncommon for blonde people to be called gringo. Peruvians do not hesitate to greet you with "¡Hola, gringo!".
Generally, people are very friendly, peaceful and helpful. When in trouble, you mostly can rely on getting help. But as with any setting, it is always good to watch out for yourself and try to avoid bad situations. If you get into an argument, it is a good idea to remain amicable, but firm. Most of the time, you can find a compromise that satisfies everyone.

Although Peru has rich natural resources and many great places to visit, the poverty scale reaches 25.8% of the population. The rich, consisting mostly of a Hispanic (or "Criollo") elite, live in the cities. Nevertheless, most Peruvians are great nationalists and love their country with pride (largely stemming from Peru's history as the hub of both the Inca empire and Spain's South American empire). Also, many Peruvians separate the state of Peru and its government in their minds. Many of them distrust their government and police, and people are used to fighting corruption and embezzlement scandals, as in many countries.
The Peruvian economy is healthy and quite strong, however inequality is still common. It is indebted and dependent on industrial nations, especially China, Russia and United States. The US foreign policy decisions in recent years has contributed to a widely held negative view about the US government in Peru, but not against individual citizens.
The word gringo is used commonly but is not generally intended as offensive. The original meaning encompassed all white people who do not speak Spanish. Many people use the word gringo exclusively for Americans or American look-alikes. It's not uncommon for blonde people to be called gringo. Peruvians do not hesitate to greet you with "¡Hola, gringo!".
Generally, people are very friendly, peaceful and helpful. When in trouble, you mostly can rely on getting help. But as with any setting, it is always good to watch out for yourself and try to avoid bad situations. If you get into an argument, it is a good idea to remain amicable, but firm. Most of the time, you can find a compromise that satisfies everyone.

From an airplaine, we can try to solve the secret of the Nazca lines, we can take a train to the Altiplano, we can travel through the paradise of the Paracas Paninsula on boat, we can take a look at the monuments of Lima and Cuzco, and follow Thor Heyerdahl’s path, when we sit into a boat on the Titicaca lake.

So we're off the train and this marks the start of the Inca Trail.
So I guess we should explain that we aren't doing the traditional Inca trail. Normally you can do a four day walk or a 10 day walk. We're actually only doing a two day walk. We're not really lazy it is just kind of how it happened. Come on we are. Maybe, maybe just a little bit. We crave our comfort. So basically we're going to be hiking for a full day and then we're going to get to our Aguas Calientes and stay in a hotel. We're not staying in tents. And then the following day we'll be touring Machu Picchu with a guide and like learning the history of the place. So I guess really it is only one day walking the Inca Trail but we're going to say two to feel a little better about ourselves.
So within five minutes of walking we've already reached our first Inca site.
Machu Picchu! Machu Picchu! We made it. How are you feeling? I know. After that long hike. It is amazing. And we're so lucky to have views like this because apparently it was raining for three days before we did this hike. I know. And we have sunshine and blue skies and the lost city is waiting for us. Just over there.

We're going to be trying some traditional food from Cusco.
So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people.

After spending some time in Lima, we flew into Iquitos for the final leg of our Peruvian adventure. The landscape changed from arid deserts to mountains and finally to jungle as our flight crossed the country, and once we arrived, the first thing we did was hop into a tuk-tuk to take us into the city.
So we have made it to Iquitos.
Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one.
