The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a civilian foreign intelligence service of the U.S. Government, tasked with gathering, processing and analyzing national security information from around the world, primarily through the use of human intelligence (HUMINT). As one of the principal members of the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC), the CIA reports to the Director of National Intelligence and is primarily focused on providing intelligence for the President and his Cabinet.
Unlike the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is a domestic security service, CIA has no law enforcement function and is mainly focused on overseas intelligence gathering, with only limited domestic collection. Though it is not the only U.S. government agency specializing in HUMINT, CIA serves as the national manager for coordination and deconfliction of HUMINT activities across the entire intelligence community. Moreover, CIA is the only agency authorized by law to carry out and oversee covert action on behalf of the President, unless the President determines that another agency is better suited for carrying out such action. It can, for example, exert foreign political influence through its tactical divisions, such as the Special Activities Division.
Lindsay Moran (born 18 December 1969) is a former clandestine officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. She is a freelance writer whose articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today. In 2005 she published her memoir Blowing My Cover, My Life As A Spy, in which she wrote about her experiences as a case officer from 1998 to 2003.
Ms. Moran’s articles and opinions have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and various other publications. She has served as a commentator on security and intelligence issues on CNN, ABC, MSNBC, and Fox Networks, as well as other national and local radio outlets. In 2013, she became an expert contributor/field correspondent for Al-Jazeera America.
In 2012, she co-wrote Counterintelligence and Operational Security with West Point Assistant Professor Glenn Voelz, formerly of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Ms. Moran also develops curricula for training programs, and writes accompanying fictional scenarios based on operations, tradecraft and geopolitical events. She has obtained CIA clearance for all published and training materials.

But after a while, it became clear that the agency is not what she expected. She is the author of, "Blowing my Cover: My Life as a Spy," of which she's said, "It's not a threat to write a book about a dysfunctional intelligence organization. It's a threat to have a dysfunctional intelligence organization, and that was my ultimate conclusion." What happened in Lindsay Moran's life as a CIA operative? What did she do, and what did she think of it? She speaks out to Cenk Uygur here on TYT Interviews

In 2007, John Kiriakou became the first Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) official to publicly confirm that agency interrogators waterboarded a high-value detainee, terrorism suspect Abu Zubaydah — a revelation that had previously been a closely guarded secret. Five years after this unauthorized disclosure to ABC News, the veteran CIA officer pleaded guilty to leaking to journalists the identity of certain individuals who were involved with the CIA's rendition, detention, and interrogation program. He was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison. VICE News caught up with Kiriakou for a wide-ranging interview just a few days after he was released from prison. He detailed how his CIA training became a technique for survival behind bars, and how the government turned him into a “...

Sabrina De Sousa is one of nearly two-dozen CIA officers who was prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced by Italian courts in absentia in 2009 for the role she allegedly played in the rendition of a radical cleric named Abu Omar. It was the first and only criminal prosecution that has ever taken place related to the CIA's rendition program, which involved more than 100 suspected terrorists and the assistance of dozens of European countries. But De Sousa, a dual US and Portuguese citizen, said she had nothing to do with the cleric's abduction and has been wrongly accused. For the past decade, she has been on a global quest to clear her name. The Pentagon has released a 10-year-old video showing the interrogation of Osama bin Laden's driver, a Yemeni named Salem Hamdan. The video, recorded shortly after his capture in Afghanistan 2001, shows Hamdan in a sparse room, kneeling on what appears to be a dirt floor, handcuffed with a hood over his head. An American soldier armed with an automatic weapon removes the hood and an interrogator off camera begins to question Hamdan in Arabic. The video include chyrons with an English translation of the exchanges. The interrogator asks Hamdan about weapons found in his car and support for al-Qaida. Hamdan strenuously denies knowing anything about the weapons or al-Qaida operations. The interrogation is measured, not overly aggressive, and there are no physical signs that Hamdan had been...
