Sorry for the mistake. ::::::::::::::: The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam 1922 - Anne Harriet Fish Anne Harriet Fish Fish, (Harriet) Annie [Anne] (1890--1964), cartoonist and illustrator, was born in Brynland Avenue, Horfield, Bristol, on 27 March 1890, the daughter of Benjamin Fish, commercial clerk, later an accountant, and Annie Hitchcock. The family then moved to Ealing, west London, and she was educated at home before studying art under C. M. Q. Orchardson and George Belcher, and at the John Hassall School of Art (then called the New School of Art). She began work as a book illustrator for John Lane (possibly introduced by Hassall), her first title being the Canadian humorist Stephen Leacock's Behind the Beyond (1913). She also contributed to American magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair (including covers) before, recommended by Hassall, she met the editor of The Sketch and began contributing to the magazine (1914). This led to a commission from the Tatler to illustrate a new satirical 'society' feature, 'The Letters of Eve' (written by Mrs Maitland Davies), which first appeared on 20 May 1914 and for which she is best known. The original series spawned three Eve books (1916--19), 'drawn by Fish and written by "Fowl"' (the Tatler's editor, Edward Huskinson), an exhibition of 128 of the original drawings at the Fine Art Society (1916), and twelve silent two-reel comedy films produced by Gaumont (1918), featuring Eileen Molyneux as Eve. The original Eve feature was not limited to the usual single- or multi-panel format but often spread over a complete page. A spoof on social butterflies and heroic-looking but ultimately helpless Edwardian men, it was a great success, as much for its decorative fashion-style drawing as for its affectionate satire on a society that the war and universal suffrage would change for ever. Eve's phenomenal success gave rise to many imitators (including 'The letters of Phrynette' illustrated by Gladys Peto in The Sketch), and when it was suggested that Fish was the sole creator of the character a court case ensued. Anne Fish continued to illustrate Mrs Davies's text until 1920 when the series was transferred to Pan, where it was illustrated by Jo White and then Dolly Tree. As well as the Eve books, Fish also produced another large-format book in similar vein, High Society (1920), with drawings from Vanity Fair (New York) and Tatler illustrating advice on social climbing by Dorothy Parker and others. Other titles included Awful Weekends and Guests (1938) and All's Well that Ends Swell (1939). She also produced book jackets for John Lane Ltd and illustrations for books published by Blackwells, Chatto and Windus, and Methuen as well as a sumptuous edition of Edward Fitzgerald's Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam (1922). In addition she contributed humorous illustrations, caricatures, and joke cartoons to Eve, London Calling, Printer's Pie, The Patrician, Punch, Vanity Fair (including more than 130 covers), Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan. An admirer of Edward Burne-Jones and Aubrey Beardsley, Fish had a preference for solid blacks and fine lines which echoes the work of the latter (who was also published by John Lane) in some degree though not consciously so as she 'only saw Beardsley's work some time after I was told I copied his style' (North). Her most familiar drawings often have no backgrounds and the figures no shadows, with long-line shading mostly being used rather than cross-hatching or wash and fine dotted lines to show such features as pleats, folds, furs, and steam. She also painted in oils and watercolour, for example, Kilkhampton (exh. RA, 1933), etched (a print from her etching The Snake Charmer is in the British Museum), created textile designs for her husband Walter William Sefton (d. 1952)—a Belfast linen manufacturer whom she married on 12 March 1918—and drew advertisements for Abdulla cigarettes, Eno's salts, Erasmic, cosmetic companies, and others. A member of the University Women's Club, the Arts Theatre Club, the Penwith Society of Artists, the Newlyn Society of Artists, and the St Ives Old Society of Artists, she retired to St Ives in Cornwall in the late 1940s and thereafter concentrated on painting, mostly landscapes and cats. Anne Fish died on 10 October 1964 in St Michael's Hospital, Hayle, Cornwall, of complications resulting from a fall in her bath.
