Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

A world away from the perfect fairways of the pro golf tour, Colin Montgomerie gave a master class in one of the world's unlikeliest driving ranges. For over an hour he gave personal coaching to forces golf fans spread out across the windswept dust of Camp Bastion, Britain's massive supply base in Afghanistan. As he expertly drove ball-after-ball onto targets borrowed from the rifle ranges, he joked how helicopter gunships low overhead might cramp his drive. The Ryder Cup-winning captain spent four days in Afghanistan between international tournaments, boosting morale and equipping Bastion's very first Golf course, with thousands of pounds worth of donated equipment. He told troops he did not realise how few stars had risked a trip to Helmand. "I thought there were so-called celebrities an...

Football teams, ROTC students, members of youth leadership groups, bikers wearing black leather — their full-sized American flags proudly waving as they pulled into formation, legions of workers volunteering for their companies, set apart by their familiar colors (orange for Home Depot, blue for The Gas Co.), every person there with a single purpose — to roll up their sleeves and rehabilitate the home of Joshua and Windie Murphy. [2017, digital video and stills, 1:13:56 TRT, audio and color.] Using an experimental literature press as her credential, performer Danielle Adair embeds as “media” with US soldiers in eastern Afghanistan, following one female Intelligence officer in particular. The video unfolds through a series of vignettes, which take up the personas of different US war reporters, in an effort to discover how counterinsurgency is ‘performed’ abroad. Composed almost entirely of still imagery and audio recordings from Adair's time at bases in the US (Fort Irwin and Fort Hood) and away (Bagram, Eggers, Fenty, and Finley in Afghanistan) shortly following President Obama's first election, FIRST ASSIGNMENT refigures the media’s portrayal of war and the aesthetics of visual representation. The war in Afghanistan is the period in which the United States invaded the country after the September 11 attacks, supported initially by close allies, and eventually by the wider North Atlantic Treaty Organization, beginning in 2003. The conflict is also known as the U.S. war in Afghanistan. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. On 28 December 2014, NATO formally ended combat operations in Afghanistan and transferred full security responsibility to th...

Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan 2008 on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (using some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048, almost 5x full 1080P High Definition. I only had the camera for 5 days of shooting, and this is what I pieced together for concept presentation purposes. It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both...
This is not a story about war, or poppy cultivation or even the ongoing governmental issues that have been so prevalent in Afghanistan’s more recent history. This piece offers up an intimate description of a country that is just coming out of a thirteen year period of foreign military occupation. With the vast amount of negative coverage Afghanistan has seen over the last decade, reportage illustrator George Butler aims to portray a first hand impression of how things are developing and how life continues despite the uncertainty of the countries situation. The song is Chad VanGaalen's "Rabid Bits of Time" from his terrific 2008 album Soft Airplane. I learned in Afghanistan that everything I thought I knew about humanity was wrong. I was profoundly depressed in the wake of this admission. My ideology needed to be true and so constantly justified; I needed to believe it was advantageous, even though it so often led me astray and prohibited my real salvation from error. Now I can see things from which I had heretofore blinded myself. Some of these things are beautiful. And they are more beautiful because I could only arrive at them by first wading forward through so much pain. ...

Footage I shot of my deployment to Afghanistan in 2009 of Air Force/Air National Guard Combat Rescue/Medevac/Casevac operations in the Helmand Valley area. Responding at a moment's notice via the HH-60G Pave Hawk, CSAR is an advanced and highly capable rescue system for the coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan. I wasn't able to arrange for a RED this time around, but have been able to record some decent HD footage on a new Sony Handycam. This was a very sobering deployment and probably my last in an "operational" capacity as I move on with my military career. I will continue to push for a dedicated high quality filming team, and a "prime time" outlet for the public to maintain it's connection with our service-members. The connection between oil and U.S. foreign policy should be obvious already. This simply hits that nail into the coffin one more time. Originally produced in 2002, it seems appropriate to re-introduce this piece as Afghanistan continues to once again occupy the attention of the public, the media, and the powers that be. This audiovisual collage piece was originally a backdrop video for a live electronic music performance of mine in april 2002. The recorded live music was relayered back onto the video and the whole thing tweaked and horked a little more. The source material used is listed in the credits at the end of the video.

In Tajikistan, bread is still baked in a beautiful, traditional way at Shamsullo Dustov’s house in Kumsangir—just 30 miles from the Afghan border. Much of the surrounding land is nonarable, so the homemade bread makes up a large part of peoples’ average daily caloric intake. Watch the process unfold in John Wendle's short piece. The culture of Afghanistan reflects its ancient roots and position as a crossroads for invading ethnic groups and traditions. Little the Afghans make is unattractive; even common grain bags to carry produce to market are often embroidered to make them more beautiful. A camel caravan of nomads often looks like a circus parade, with the animals decked out in woven finery. The Islamic traditions of fine calligraphy and graphic arts are evoked in the fine filigreed flourishes that decorate many buildings. Poetry and poets are revered. Although the people of Afghanistan may have been sorely stressed by centuries of warfare and a difficult environment, their arts have prospered nonetheless. Afghanistan which is called the crossroad of Central Asia has a history over 5.000 years but it has been...
The fruit of years of collaborative work between Afghan and Western photographers and photojournalists, Streets of Afghanistan chronicles one of the most captivating efforts to connect communities and cultures through our common humanity and the power of art. After an extremely successful tour in the United States, the "Streets of Afghanistan" project returned to Afghanistan, to give the exhibit's subjects an opportunity to see themselves in a new light. Impressive and captivating on both sides of the world, Streets of Afghanistan collects both the photographs and the cultural import of a misunderstood region into one visually striking book. Looking at the photographs, it is easy to immerse yourself in a culture which was previously unknown to many Western audiences. In the pages of this...

In Afghanistan, women are receiving training to become nurses or midwives under the Community Midwifery Education (CME) and Community Health Nursing Education (CHNE) programs. This training is one of the measures undertaken to address the shortage of female health workers, deliver better health services, and help fulfil the ambitions of many women to serve their community.
The System Enhancement for Health Action in Transition (SEHAT) Program, under the Ministry of Public Health, aims to expand scope, coverage, and quality of health services to the population. This program is seeing results in Herat Province. There is greater access to health services as well as an increase in public awareness of health issues.

With the world's highest infant mortality rate, one in four Afghan children dies before the age of five (311,000 annually). HPIC's goal is to work in tandem with Canadian pharmaceutical companies to secure up to $25 million worth of donated medicines and medical supplies. 93% of the world opium is produced in Afghanistan and, there were, in 2009, 1 500 000 drug users in the country. Furthermore, the pattern of drug use in Afghanistan has been changing from smoking to injecting. Kabul, the capital, is home to 50 % of the country’s heroin users (around 20000 people according to UNODC in 2009). Médecins du Monde (an international humanitarian Non-Governmental Organization) has been active in Afghanistan for the past 24 years in the implementation of different health programs. Since 2006, MDM focuses on prevention, care and treatment for (injecting) drug users, known as the highest risk group regarding HIV/AIDS in the country. The Afghan Ministry of Public Health and MdM started a pilot program for opioid substitution therapy and the first 10 persons received ...
BAMIYAN, Afghanistan: Decades of war in Afghanistan is taking an ultimate toll on ordinary people. The country currently has the world's second highest rate of maternal mortality after Sierra Leone, as a dire shortage of clinics and health professionals puts mothers at risk. Faced with thousands of preventable deaths every year, an American-funded programme is making strides in saving women and their babies. Shot, edited, scripted and voiced by Karishma Vyas
The Wakhan Corridor, a thin finger of land in northeast Afghanistan, is an incredibly tough place to live. North of Pakistan, bordering China and the contested Kashmir state of India, the people here are statistically high in poverty and hunger, low in health and education. Yet in Matthieu Paley’s stunning photographs that comprise this simple and memorable film, we see joy and humanity from the impoverished inhabitants. Beauty and hardship walk hand in hand in this collage of photographs and sounds from a place forgotten on the roof of the world.
Afghanistan, a country that has suffered through decades of war and conflict, is now facing yet another challenge due to the growing number of opium addicts. Nearly one million Afghans between the ages of 15 and 65 are affected. Many are addicted from before they are even born. In remote areas of Afghanistan, health care is in crisis. Many people don’t have access to clinics and medicines. Those who do often find that pharmaceuticals are often out of date making them ineffective. This lack of organized health care is making people turn to the one local drug that is cheaply and readily available - Opium. I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another. BBC presentation on Kabul, Afghanistan
Hey everyone! it's been a very very long time since I've uploaded anything on here but last month (september) I went to Afghanistan for 7 days to visit my dad and spend my 25th birthday with him since I was living in Dubai which is only a 3 hour flight to Kabul. When I travel to Afghanistan I stay in Kabul for the majority of my trip which is exactly what happened this time BUT I did manage to take a day trip to Panjshir Province. Panjshir is where my family is originally from, my mother was born there, my grandparents from both sides, etc...I thought about vlogging my trip because I figured Afghanistan is an interesting country that not many people have the chance to visit but once I arrived I was really just so caught up with seeing family and spending time with my dad that I kept forg...
Official trailer for The Small Heart of Things by Julian Hoffman, winner of the 2012 AWP Award Series for Creative Nonfiction and published by the University of Georgia Press on October 15th, 2013. The Small Heart of Things intimately examines the myriad ways in which connections to the natural world can be deepened through an equality of perception, whether it's a caterpillar carrying its house of leaves, transhumant shepherds ranging high mountain pastures, a quail taking cover on an empty steppe, or a Turkmen family emigrating from Afghanistan to Istanbul. The narrative spans the common—and often contested—ground that supports human and natural communities alike, seeking the unsung stories that sustain us. The Small Heart of Things is a book about looking and listening. It incorporate...
http://www.abc.net.au/dustonmyshoes/ DUST ON MY SHOES is based on an epic travel book written by Peter Pinney, an Australian adventurer who journeyed overland from Greece, through Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Assam and India, to Burma in 1949. Travelling with the bare minimum of luggage and usually penniless, he was the trailblazer for the legions of young Australians taking on the trouble-spots of the world with just a pack on their back and a guide book in their hand.
