Holy Avenger

Holy Avenger is a Brazilian comic book series by writer Marcelo Cassaro and artist Erica Awano.

A post-teenage Brazilian comic, it is set in the medieval fantasy world of Arton, part of the RPG campaign setting Tormenta.

Overview

The series lasted for 42 issues (40 regular ones and a 2-issue "post-end" story). Spinoffs include special issues that portray each of the main characters individually, an audio CD with voice actors playing the characters, an RPG book based on events in the series, an artbook with original sketches, and a new edition.

The English name Holy Avenger was given to the series because it can both refer to a D&D magical item and one of the main characters, the Paladin. A Portuguese name would have been gender-specific to indicate either the sword or the fighter, and thus wouldn't work the same way. In this case, the title becomes "Vingador Sagrado" (male gender) or "Vingadora Sagrada" (female gender).

History

Originally, Holy Avenger was an adventure for a D&D game published in the RPG magazine Dragão Brasil, issues #44 to #46, in 1998. In 1999, author Marcelo Cassaro made up his own RPG setting, called "Tormenta" (Storm, referencing an extraplanar storm that afflicted the campaign setting's world). He included the Holy Avenger characters in this new RPG setting. In 1999 he teamed up with Erica Awano to start an ongoing monthly comic series.

Marcelo Cassaro

Marcelo Cassaro (born August 15, 1970) is a Brazilian author of comics, RPGs and the sci-fi book Sword of the Galaxy (Espada da Galáxia). Along with Marcelo Del Debbio, he is one of the most well-known RPG authors in Brazil, he is also known for creating Holy Avenger, the longest living non-child-oriented comic in Brazil, as well as several other comics such as the two Dungeon Crawlers mini-series (taking place in the same RPG scenario of Arton from Tormenta/HolyAvenger), Victory (which was also published in the United States by Image Comics), Captain Ninja, Lua dos Dragões (Moon of Dragons) and Dragonesa, as well as a 4-issue miniseries adaptation of Street Fighter Alpha 3. He also has an unfinished work, the two-part mini-series called Killbite, a spin-off from an earlier Captain Ninja mini-series, that remains incomplete (only the first part was published).

Cassaro started his career at the age of 15, in 1985, as a design assistant for animated cartoons in the Maurício de Sousa studios. In 1989, he was hired as an artist and then as writer for comic books for Abril Jovem (Joe Carioca, Os Trapalhões, Jaspion). He won the Prêmio Abril de Jornalismo three times, in the category "Comic Book Writing": in 1991, 1992 and 1994.

Sacred

Sacred means revered due to sanctity, is in general the state of being holy (perceived by religious individuals as associated with divinity) or sacred (considered worthy of spiritual respect or devotion; or inspiring awe or reverence among believers).

From an anthropological or atheistic perspective, the religious view of the sacred is an emic perspective on a culture's collection of thoughts and practices that function as a basis for the community's social structure.

Objects are often considered holy or sacred if used for spiritual purposes, such as the worship or service of gods. The property is often ascribed to people ("a holy man", a "holy prophet" who is venerated by his followers), objects (a "sacred artifact" that is venerated and blessed), times ("holy days"), or places ("holy places", "sacred ground").

Etymology

The word "sacred" descends from the Latin sacrum, which referred to the gods or anything in their power, and to sacerdos and sanctum, set apart. It was generally conceived spatially, as referring to the area around a temple.
