Sharp Corp Mulls Deal With Taiwan's Foxconn
Employees of the loss-making Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp arrived at work avoiding media attention on Wednesday as their company’s board began a two-day meeting to decide their company's fate.
Sharp is to decide if it should accept a 5.9 billion dollar takeover by Taiwan's Foxconn instead of an offer from a state-backed fund.
A deal with Foxconn, the world’s biggest assembler of Apple Inc products, would pave the way for the largest acquisition by a foreign company in Japan’s insulated technology sector.
Sources said the Taiwanese firm, the world’s biggest contract maker of electronic gadgets, has offered to invest 5.9 billion dollars in Sharp.
That is more than double the investment offered by the state-backed Innovation Network Corp of Japan, which was previously considered a more reliable investor with the backing of government.

Sharp Corporation is preparing for major management changes upon the completion of its acquistion by Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Foxconn's number two executive, Tai Jeng-wu, will replace Sharp CEO Kozo Takahashi.
The Journal also reports 13 Sharp board members, including CEO Takahashi, will be replaced. The new board will shrink to nine members, including six appointed by Foxconn.
Last month, Foxconn agreed to pay about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars for a two-thirds stake in Sharp, making it the largest acquistion by a foreign company in Japan's tech industry.
The takeover comes amid significant losses by Sharp... with Foxconn planning to turn around the company,... and that includes focusing on Sharp's screen technology.
That's right. The new corporation with particularly target Apple as a buyer for displays,... which analysts in Korea believe may put a dent in Samsung and LG's display sales.
We'll have to see how the management overhaul impacts major decisions down the road. Thanks Bruce.

Sharp Corporation
Sharp Corporation (シャープ株式会社, Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese multinational corporation that designs and manufactures electronic products. Headquartered in Abeno-ku, Osaka, Japan, Sharp employed 49,096 people worldwide as of March 2015. The company was founded in September 1912 and takes its name from one of its founder's first inventions, the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil, which was invented by Tokuji Hayakawa (早川 徳次) in 1915.
As of 2013, Sharp Corporation is the tenth-largest, by market share, television manufacturer in the world. In Japan it has been a long-time leader. Sharp has at times also been the most popular mobile phone brand in the Japanese market, but is currently third biggest.
History
In 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa (早川 徳次) founded a metal workshop in Tokyo. The first of his many inventions was a snap buckle named 'Tokubijo'. Another of his inventions was the Ever-Sharp mechanical pencil in 1915, from which the Sharp Corporation derived its name. After the pencil business was destroyed by the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, the company relocated to Osaka and began designing the first generation of Japanese radio sets. These went on sale in 1925. In 1953, Sharp started producing television sets.

Sharp is to decide if it should accept a 5.9 billion dollar takeover by Taiwan's Foxconn instead of an offer from a state-backed fund. Employees of the loss-making Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp arrived at work avoiding media attention on Wednesday as their company’s board began a two-day meeting to decide their company's fate.
Sharp is to decide if it should accept a 5.9 billion dollar takeover by Taiwan's Foxconn instead of an offer from a state-backed fund.
A deal with Foxconn, the world’s biggest assembler of Apple Inc products, would pave the way for the largest acquisition by a foreign company in Japan’s insulated technology sector.
Sources said the Taiwanese firm, the world’s biggest contract maker of electronic gadgets, has offered to invest 5.9 billion dollars in Sharp.
That is more than double the investment offered by the state-backed Innovation Network Corp of Japan, which was previously considered a more reliable investor with the backing of government.

Last month, Foxconn agreed to pay about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars for a two-thirds stake in Sharp, making it the largest acquistion by a foreign company in Japan's tech industry.
The takeover comes amid significant losses by Sharp... with Foxconn planning to turn around the company,... and that includes focusing on Sharp's screen technology.
That's right. The new corporation with particularly target Apple as a buyer for displays,... which analysts in Korea believe may put a dent in Samsung and LG's display sales.
