Montreal

Montreal (ⁱ/ˌmʌntriːˈɒl/;French: Montréal,pronounced: [mɔ̃ʁeal]) is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec. It is the second largest city in Canada and the 26th largest in the Americas. Originally called Ville-Marie, or "City of Mary," it is named after Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The city is on the Island of Montreal, which took its name from the same source as the city, and a few much smaller peripheral islands, the largest of which is Île Bizard. It has a distinct four-season continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold snowy winters.

In 2011 the city had a population of 1,649,519. Montreal's metropolitan area had a population of 3,824,221 and a population of 1,886,481 in the urban agglomeration, with all of the municipalities on the Island of Montreal included. The 2014 estimate of the population of the metropolitan area of Montreal is 4.1 million.

French is the city's official language and is the language spoken at home by 56.9% of the population of the city, followed by English at 18.6% and 19.8% other languages (in the 2006 census). In the larger Montreal Census Metropolitan Area, 67.9% of the population speaks French at home, compared to 16.5% who speak English. Montreal is one of the most bilingual cities in Quebec and Canada with 56% of the population able to speak both English and French. Montreal is the second largest primarily French-speaking city in the world, after Paris.

Global News is the news and current affairs division of Global Television Network in Canada, overseeing all local and national news programming on the network's twelve owned-and-operated stations (O&Os).

Although Global stations had always carried local news in various forms, the first tentative steps towards a national presence came in 1994 with the launch of First National with Peter Kent, an early-evening program focusing on national and international news but airing only in central Canada. After acquiring the Western International Communications (WIC) group of stations, Global cancelled First National in February 2001 and briefly aired the similar WIC newscast Canada Tonight in its place.

CKMI-DT

CKMI-DT-1, UHF channel 15, is a Global owned-and-operated television station located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The station is owned by the Shaw Media division of Shaw Communications. CKMI's studios are located inside the Dominion Square Building in Downtown Montreal, and its transmitter is located atop Mount Royal. This station can also be seen on Vidéotron cable channel 8 and in high definition on digital channel 608, and on Bell TV channel 234. On Shaw Direct, the channel is available on 330 (Classic) or 059 (Advanced), and in high definition on channel 043 (Classic) or 530 (Advanced).

History

The station launched on March 17, 1957, broadcasting on VHF channel 5, and was the second privately owned station in Quebec. CKMI was originally owned by Télévision de Québec, along with the province's first private station, CFCM-TV. It was originally licensed to Quebec City, and the station's studios were located alongside CFCM's facilities in Sainte-Foy, then a suburb of Quebec City. Télévision de Québec was a consortium of cinema chain Famous Players and Quebec City's three privately owned radio stations, CHRC, CKCV and CJQC. It immediately became Quebec City's CBC Television affiliate, taking all English language programming from CFCM. In 1964, following the opening of CBVT, CFCM disaffiliated from Radio-Canada (the French language arm of the CBC) and joined the loose association of independent stations that evolved into TVA, while CKMI remained with CBC.

The Morning News (known as the Saturday Morning News or the Sunday Morning News on Saturdays and Sundays respectively and the Early Morning News from 5-6 AM) is the name of local morning newscasts airing on Global Television Network's owned-and-operated stations (O&Os) in British Columbia, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Montreal, and Halifax with each station producing its own edition of the program.

As part of Shaw Communications' benefit package for acquiring Global and other specialty channels from the bankrupt Canwest, Global O&Os in Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Montreal, and the Maritimes would each launch morning shows for their respective markets. As of January 28, 2013, this promise has been fulfilled by Shaw Media.

Global BC

The Morning News on Global BC airs at 5:00AM to 9AM PT on weekdays and at 7:00AM to 10:00AM PT on Saturday and Sunday mornings. It is simulcast on Global Okanagan. The weekday edition of Morning News is hosted by Steve Darling and Sonia Deol with Yvonne Schalle as meteorologist, and Kaitlyn Herbst as in studio traffic reporter and Amber Belzer in Global 1. The Saturday and Sunday edition of Morning News is hosted by Lynn Colliar with Sonia Beeksma on weather and Jay Janower on sports.
