About the Talk
Mr. Russo looks forward to describing how that in his pursuit of long-term tax-deferred investment returns that he has favored investments in businesses whose global brands are well-position companies for reinvestment of mature market free cash flow into developing and emerging markets. Mr. Russo’s businesses accordingly possess the “capacity to reinvest” and managements who have the “capacity to suffer” when investments properly intended for longest term increase in intrinsic value on a per share basis burden as they often do, reported earnings in the near term.
This tradeoff between near-term pain and long-term gain is at the heart of his investments when properly executed, the benefit for taxable investors is the ability to build portfolio companies whose return are long term and tax deferred.
About the Speaker
Mr. Thomas A. Russo is the Managing Member of Gardner Russo & Gardner LLC, where he oversees $10 billion of “global value” equity investments invested through Semper Vic Partnerships as well as separately managed accounts. Mr. Russo is a Graduate of Dartmouth College (BA, 1977), and a Graduate of Stanford Business and Law Schools (MBA/JD, 1984). The Panel is split into two sections. The first section Law and the DAO will be covering questions like:
• What is the DAO and what is the community of token holders?
• Who is legally responsible for and liable for acts or omissions of the DAO?
• Can the DAO or the token holders sue or be sued?
• Is the DAO creating (or can it create) a new legal paradigm, or will existing legal frameworks (legal corporate structure, etc) simply be applied onto/around the core automated processes of DAOs.
The second section Law and Blockchain will be addressing:
• Can smart contracts function as legal contracts and vis-a-versa.
• What will the practice of law look like in the era of smart contracts and blockchain? What will change? Will all lawyers be coders? Will human judgment still be required? Will courts and judges be replaced?
• How will DAOs, blockchains and smart contracts change the law itself (property law, IP law, tax law, criminal law)?
• Part of the vision of blockchain is freedom and empowerment, but with public blockchains, what happens to the right of privacy and the right to be forgotten?
The panel was chaired by Stuart Mast - with over 15 years of experience practicing law at some of the biggest international law firms. He has been involved with startups as a founder, partner, investor and evangelist. As a lawyer, Stuart is particularly excited about the role law can play in helping to advance the developments in the blockchain ecosystem, as well as the remarkable opportunity we now have to think about how law, and the ways we regulate ourselves and resolve disputes, can be reinvented.

• Stephen D. Palley is of counsel in the Washington D.C. office of Anderson Kill. He focuses his practice on litigation, trial practice and insurance coverage. He has recently published articles on determining jurisdiction when a DAO is sued, and on how to sue a DAO.

He acts for clients drawn from all across the Technology sector, including software developers, online entrepreneurs and hardware manufacturers.
• Sean Murphy is a corporate partner in Norton Rose Fulbright's London office. The Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) have recently become a major political stumbling stone. What can be learned from the resistance in terms of legal compatibility with EU law and domestic law – and of political acceptability?
Jan Kleinheisterkamp is Associate Professor at LSE Law and teaches International Arbitration, Contracts, and Investment Treaty Law. Much of his recent research has focused on the interaction between investment treaty law and EU law and influenced the work of the European Parliament on this subject.

Event in the program of Luxembourg’s EU Council presidency where senior government and EU representatives will discuss challenges of the TTIP. Experts of international investment arbitration will address the EU Commission proposal to establish a permanent court on the protection of investments.
Luxembourg’s presidency of the Council of the European Union offers the opportunity to host a two-day event under the title “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – Framing the Adequate System for Investor-State Dispute Settlement.” On this occasion, senior representatives of the ministries in Luxembourg and of EU institutions will discuss the expectations and challenges of the TTIP. In the second part of the conference, leading experts in international arbitration will discuss the current state of affairs and the most pertinent problems of the investor-state dispute settlement, especially the latest proposals of the EU-Commission on the establishment of a permanent court on investment dispute settlement as well as the prospects of a future dispute resolution mechanism.

Investor
An investor allocates capital with the expectation of a future financial return. Types of investments include: equity, debt securities, real estate, currency, commodity, derivatives such as put and call options, etc. This definition makes no distinction between those in the primary and secondary markets. That is, someone who provides a business with capital and someone who buys a stock are both investors. An investor who owns a stock is a shareholder.
Essential quality
The assumption of risk in anticipation of gain but recognizing a higher than average possibility of loss. The term "speculation" implies that a business or investment risk can be analyzed and measured, and its distinction from the term "investment" is one of degree of risk. It differs from gambling, which is based on random outcomes.
Investors can include stock traders but with this distinguishing characteristic: investors are owners of a company which entails responsibilities.

Law
Law is a system of rules that are enforced through social institutions to govern behavior. Real estate
Real estate is "property consisting of land and the buildings on it, along with its natural resources such as crops, minerals, or water; immovable property of this nature; an interest vested in this (also) an item of real property; (more generally) buildings or housing in general. International law
International law is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and between nations. It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations. International law differs from state-based legal systems in that it is primarily applicable to countries rather than to private citizens. National law may become international law when treaties delegate national jurisdiction to supranational tribunals such as the European Court of Human Rights or the International Criminal Court. Treaties such as the Geneva Conventions may require national law to conform to respective parts.
Much of international law is consent-based governance. This means that a state member is not obliged to abide by this type of international law, unless it has expressly consented to a particular course of conduct. This is an issue of state sovereignty. However, other aspects of international law are not consent-based but still are obligatory upon state and non-state actors such as customary international law and peremptory norms (jus cogens).

The panel was chaired by Stuart Mast - with over 15 years of experience practicing law at some of the biggest international law firms. He has been involved with startups as a founder, partner, investor and evangelist. As a lawyer, Stuart is particularly excited about the role law can play in helping to advance the developments in the blockchain ecosystem, as well as the remarkable opportunity we now have to think about how law, and the ways we regulate ourselves and resolve disputes, can be reinvented.

The Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) have recently become a major political stumbling stone. What can be learned from the resistance in terms of legal compatibility with EU law and domestic law – and of political acceptability?
Jan Kleinheisterkamp is Associate Professor at LSE Law and teaches International Arbitration, Contracts, and Investment Treaty Law. Much of his recent research has focused on the interaction between investment treaty law and EU law and influenced the work of the European Parliament on this subject.
Martti Koskenniemi is Professor of International Law at the University of Helsinki and Centennial Professor at LSE.

Luxembourg’s presidency of the Council of the European Union offers the opportunity to host a two-day event under the title “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) – Framing the Adequate System for Investor-State Dispute Settlement.” On this occasion, senior representatives of the ministries in Luxembourg and of EU institutions will discuss the expectations and challenges of the TTIP. In the second part of the conference, leading experts in international arbitration will discuss the current state of affairs and the most pertinent problems of the investor-state dispute settlement, especially the latest proposals of the EU-Commission on the establishment of a permanent court on investment dispute settlement as well as the prospects of a future dispute resolution mechanism.

Dubai is among the world's cities that are fastest growing in importance for high net worth individuals (HNWIs), according to a new report published on Wednesday.
Knight Frank and Citi Private Bank's sixth Wealth Report ranked the Gulf city eighth in a list of cities becoming more important to the world's wealthiest people. Beijing topped the list.
Emiratis were also named eighth in a list of nationalities growing in importance for the world's prime second home buyers' market, a list topped by the Chinese.
Dubai also ranked 13th in importance to HNWIs now behind London, New York, Hong Kong and Paris, the report said.
However it said Dubai would slip to 15th in importance by 2022, with London still topping the list.
It said quality of life, knowledge and influence, and economic activity were the key factors for the ultra-wealthy investing in property.
The study also showed that Monaco remains the most expensive residential location in the world, with one square metre there now worth $58,300, followed by the prime locations in Cap Ferrat, London and Hong Kong.
The Wealth Report 2012 also confirmed the relentless shift in wealth distribution towards Asia-Pacific - the region covering China, SE Asia and Japan now has more centa-millionaires (those with over $100m in assets) than North America or Western Europe.
In Europe, despite the past year's continental recession, the main luxury market hotspots have remained relatively hot -- eight out of 10 top locations in the Knight Frank Prime International Residential Index (PIRI) price rankings are in the UK, France or Switzerland.
Andrew Shirley, editor of The Wealth Report, said: "This year's Wealth Report contains even more evidence that the world's wealthy are weathering the economic slowdown better than the wider population, and nowhere is this better reflected than in prime property markets.
"Those markets considered 'safe-haven' locations continue to attract private investors looking for both prime residential and commercial property. Political and economic uncertainty across the world is only helping to exacerbate the trend."
Luigi Pigorini, CEO Citi Private Bank Europe, Middle East & Africa said: "Wealthy individuals and families, especially those originating from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, have become extraordinarily global in nature.
"Many seek the rule of law and stability that make the UK a top choice for investment.
"Investors seeking a more conservative strategy have gravitated toward high-quality properties in central business districts in cities such as Beijing, London, Munich, New York, Paris and Sydney.
