Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.
The International Energy Agency projected in 2014 that under its "high renewables" scenario, by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. Most solar installations would be in China and India.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. As the cost of solar electricity has fallen, the number of grid-connected solar PV systems has grown into the millions and utility-scale solar power stations with hundreds of megawatts are being built. Solar PV is rapidly becoming an inexpensive, low-carbon technology to harness renewable energy from the Sun.
Solar Roadways Incorporated is a startup company based in Sandpoint, Idaho, that is developing solar powered road panels to form a smart highway. Their technology combines a transparent driving surface with underlying solar cells, electronics and sensors to act as a solar array with programmable capability. Solar Roadways Inc is working to develop and commercially produce road panels which are made from recycled materials and incorporate photovoltaic cells.
In 2006, the company was founded by Scott and Julie Brusaw, with Scott as President and CEO. The company envisioned replacing asphalt surfaces with structurally-engineered solar panels capable of withstanding vehicular traffic." The proposed system would require the development of strong, transparent, and self-cleaning glass that has the necessary traction and impact-resistance properties.
In 2009, Solar Roadways received a $100,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the Department of Transportation (DOT) for Phase I to determine the feasibility of the proposed project. In 2011, Solar Roadways received $750,000 SBIR grant from the DOT for Phase II to develop and build a solar parking lot. The DOT distinguishes the technology proposed by Solar Roadways Inc. as "Solar Power Applications in the Roadway," as compared to a number of other solar technologies categorized by the DOT as "Solar Applications along the Roadway." From SBIR grant money, Solar Roadways has built a 12-by-36-foot (3.7 by 11.0 m) parking lot covered with hexagonal glass-covered solar panels sitting on top of a concrete base, which are heated to prevent snow and ice accumulation, and also include LEDs to illuminate road lines and display messages. The hexagonal shape allows for better coverage on curves and hills. According to the Brusaws, the panels can sustain a 250,000 lb (110,000 kg) load.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

The sun's rays can hit some roads for up to 90 percent of the daylight hours, so companies in Europe and the U.S. are experimenting with building solar panels along or above roads. But are such projects worth the cost? In France one company is hoping to distinguish itself—and reduce costs—with solar panels that are laid directly on the pavement. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. The world's first photovoltaic expressway will open to traffic at 14:00 on Thursday in Jinan, capital city of east China's Shandong Province. The special route paved with photovoltaic devices extends two kilometers on the southern ring road in Jinan. Some vehicles have been running on this semitransparent road to test its functions. A minibus driver said he felt nothing different driving on this particular section. "I'm running at the speed of over 100 kilometers per hour. There's nothing different from the ordinary highway. The braking distance is almost the same as well," said the driver. Full-named as load-supporting high-speed photovoltaic road, it has three layers. The top one is made of a frosted glass-like semi-translucent material featuring a higher coefficient of friction ...
HUAINAN CITY, CHINA — A new floating solar farm constructed on a lake in Huainan City, China is said to be the largest in the world. According to the South China Morning Post, the farm is made up of 160,000 solar panels. These panels reportedly can produce electricity for up to 15,000 homes. The farm is built over a lake that emerged from a collapsed coal mine, reported Phys.org. The water from the lake helps cool the panels’ electronics, reported the Smithsonian Mag, citing a Telegraph report on Europe’s largest solar farm. The farm was linked to Huainan City’s power grid last month, reported the South China Morning Post. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on ...

France Normandy: officially the first country in the world to have a solar road. Despite the doubts and criticisms, France has today inaugurated the first solar road in Normandy, within a route RD5 of the small town Tourouvre-au-Perche, which is covered by 2,800 square meters of solar panels. After five years of development and a budget of 5 million euros, France is opening the first kilometer of its solar road equipped with Wattway panels. These panels have a special design that will allow them to withstand the load of more than 2,000 vehicles daily, including the load. Under a project of the company 'Colas', which belongs to the huge telecommunications group Bouygues financed by the state, the solar panels have been coated with a resin made of thin sheets of silicon, which makes them b...

The world's first solar highway has been opened in France, in the not-very-sunny village of Tourouvre au Perche in Normandy. The roadway is just one kilometre (0.6mi) long, but that still works out at 2,800 square metres of photovoltaic cells—enough, hopefully, to power the village's street lights. The road was built by Colas, a large Anglo-French construction company. Colas has apparently been working on its own solar road tech, called Wattway, for at least five years. Wattway has been tested in car parks, but this is the first time it has been used on an active road. There will now be a two-year test period, to see if Wattway can withstand the rigour of being pounded by thousands of cars and trucks per day, and whether it can actually provide a useful amount of electricity. One of the ...

The idea of solar roads has been dismissed by many as being impractical. But that didn’t stop China from opening one for testing today, joining the ranks of France, Holland, and other countries giving it a shot. In Jinan, the capital of the northeastern Shandong province, traffic is now rolling over a stretch of expressway that’s also generating electricity from the sun, according to state-run CCTV (link in Chinese). Extending for 1 km (0.6 miles), the stretch is made of three layers: transparent concrete on the top, photovoltaic panels in the middle, and insulation on the bottom. The area covered comes out to 5,875 square meters (63,200 sq ft). A small town in Normandy, France, claims to have become the first place in the world to install a solar-power road, in a bid to run the local streetlights. The 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) stretch of road in the small village of Tourouvre-au-Perche was built at the cost of €5 million ($5.2 million) and was inaugurated yesterday by the French ecology minister, Ségolène Royal, according to a report in The Guardian. In 2016, Missouri announced it intended to upgrade part of the iconic Route 66 to become solar powered as well. https://www.cnet.com/news/worlds-first-solar-road-opens-in-france/#ftag=CAD590a51e http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
PARIS — France has announced energy plans to pave 1,000 kilometers of road with solar panels. The country's Energy Minister Segolene Royal said last month she expects tests to begin in the spring, according to Global Construction Review. The panels are made by Colas, a subsidiary of French industrial giant Bouygues, and took five years to develop. The 7-millimeter-thick Wattway solar panels contain photovoltaic cells, which collect solar energy through a thin layer of polycrystalline silicon. The panels will be glued to existing road surfaces and can withstand the passage of heavy goods vehicles, according to the manufacturers. Road surfaces are occupied by vehicles only around 10 percent of the time, so the panels will get plenty of exposure to the sun, according to the Wattway by Cola...

Solar FREAKIN roadways is a nice idea, but then again is a pogostick that can hop to the moon as a cheap, reusable trans-orbital vehicle. Is it plausible though. Well it basically proposes the union of 3 or 4 technologies. LED lights, solar panels, and glass roads. Glass really isn't a feasible material to make roads out of. 1) its too expensive. Just coating the US road system with roads would cost many times the federal budget. 2) Its too soft. Even with a textured surface for traction, it will wear away too quickly. Dirt on roads is basically small rocks, which are generally much harder than glass. Imagine taking a handful of dirt and rubbing it a window. Now imagine doing that with the wheels of a 20 ton tractor/trailer. 3) I have doubts about the physical properties of the gla...
So they are going to make roads out of plastic.... they will last 3 times longer.... will handle cables and water... AND be made out of recycled material!! Kinda like solar roadways, just without the solar panels!.. and now it has some 60 million hits on facebook! https://www.facebook.com/GIGadgets.Fans/videos/1297009613711658/ Their FAQ page is far more realistic where they basically say they dont even know if its possible or not. Makes you wonder why they described it as 'a revolution in road construction'! https://www.plasticroad.eu/en/ So the IMPLICATION is they are going to use polyethylene terephthalate, which is a great polymer. It's used to make soda bottles. However its just WAY too soft to make a road out of. Could they make a composite material? Well maybe. Naturally it...

Dave debunks the Solar Roadways project that generated over $2.1M on Indiegogo, as well as almost another million dollars in US government funding. PART 2 HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOZBrHqTJk4 In this video Dave does the solar generation calculations to see if this system is viable from an energy generation viewpoint, and also how much power the LED's might typically consume. What are the losses in a typical practical system like this? Are Solar Freakin Roadways feasible?, or just pie-in-the-sky bullshit? This debunking covers only a couple of the likely dozens of major technical issues with this concept. The main take-away form this video is that these solar roadways panels will never EVER be economically viable, and the solar payback is simply comical. EVen if they can meet a...

We're back with more Subsistence and we've come a little ways since ep 1. We now have Solar Panels which were added during a recent update providing us with Solar Energy during the daytime, and so far I'd say that the panels are well worth it. With the ability to be upgraded fairly significantly for the cost of the some fragments and a few other materials, the double +25% bonus to energy production should get us producing energy at a fairly high rate. We of course also get some base building in. I think we'll be at the point where we'll need to assault another hunter base fairly soon. Our chicken coop has also paid for itself big time with more eggs than we can handle, and with the chickens reaching max level soon, we'll have a ton of feathers on our hands. Building The Alaskan Highway - Mega Structure. The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is ...
