Panama (i/ˈpænəmɑː/ PAN-ə-mah; Spanish: Panamá [panaˈma]), officially called the Republic of Panama (Spanish: República de Panamá), is a country in Central America situated between North and South America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half of the country's 3.9 million people.
Panama was inhabited by several indigenous tribes prior to settlement by the Spanish in the 16th century. Panama broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela named the Republic of Gran Colombia. When Gran Colombia dissolved in 1831, Panama and Nueva Granada remained joined, eventually becoming the Republic of Colombia. With the backing of the United States, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the Panama Canal to be built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. In 1977, an agreement was signed for the total transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama by the end of the 20th century, which culminated on 31 December 1999.

The expansion of the Panama Canal will not be ready for its 100th anniversary on August 15 as initially hoped by canal authorities. Aimed now to be completed by June 2015, the project was proposed in 2006, began in 2007 and has cost so far US$ 6.5 billion, Newsweek reported. Connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, the canal currently uses locks in which water flows by gravity and raises ships 26 metres (85 feet) above sea level. Ships can then travel through artificial lakes and channels until they reach another set of locks leading to the sea on the other side. The expansion of the canal will feature new sets of locks that will allow the 81-km-long channel to accommodate even bigger vessels. The new locks will be larger but use less water than the existing ones. Basi...

The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016. France began work on the can...

Kyle asks people questions about current news and other topics in public areas around Springfield. Most responses are outrageously incorrect; for example, one person believed that Abraham Lincoln was the first president, and another could not identify a picture of Hillary Clinton. Sometimes the questions are of the "What color is the White House?" level, such as asking in what country the Panama Canal is located in.

This is a flight report on Copa Airlines from Panama Tocumen International Airport to Boston Logan Airport traveling Economy Class. Video taken with a Canon Powershot 710. Video editing done on Movie Maker. Panama City is the heart for Copa Airlines, a carrier of Star Alliance. The Boeing 737-700 is the 2nd largest carrier in the fleet, it doesn't seem to be as up to par as 737-800, but nothing is perfect. Our flight was treated with great care by the flight attendance while we were in economy class. Food was decant and drinks were complementary . There are a few things you don't get provided that other airlines in this class gets: Amenity Kit, Hot Towel, Own TV Screen, IFE Controller. Okay, thanks. JazzyJon30.

On our last evening in Panama, Caravan Tours gave everyone a farewell dinner. As part of the entertainment for the evening, we were treated to traditional Panamanian music and dance. We also learned about the intricate formal dresses worn by Panamanian women. And yes, that is me (Rick) dancing in the last few minutes of the video. I was invited to dance by the woman you see me dancing with. I tried to follow her lead, but I admit that I was not very good--although Kathy seemed impressed by her words at the very end of the video. This video was recorded on June 28, 2013 with a Canon PowerShot SX50 HS camera.

With Panama's rich history, biodiversity, and a multi-colorered collage of cultures, understanding what is Panamanian can be a difficult task. Walking through Panama City, you are just as likely to end up in a fabulously gay bar as you are a posh salsa club. Dim sum breakfast is served right next door to tortillas and frijoles. Don't even get me started about religion. Then, head out of the city and into the forested Kuna lowlands or vastly deforested Chiriqui highlands. The class changes are shocking and the beauty is breathtaking. Our point of entry was this - non-verbal communication. How better to learn about people than by understanding the unwritten history layered in their movement, spatial organization, posture, and gestures. 10 days, one amazing journey into the heart of ...

Modern time wonder The Panama Canal in Panama City. Panama City is the capital of the southern state of Central America’s land bridge. This vibrant, modern city is located in a tropical country at which Panama’s isthmus is only eighty miles wide. The country's name is famous because it contains the most important waterway in the world and the development of both urban and rural areas is due to the presence of the gigantic Panama Canal. This massive and amazingly expensive project of building technology is best understood by travelling along it, a journey that takes around nine hours and changes direction twice a day. I went to Bocas Del Toro, Panama for a week-long surf fest with a bunch of my friends in January 2010. We surfed five hours a day at reef breaks, ate delicious breakfast and lunch meals cooked by our Azucar Surf host, and soaked up the warm temps and rays while it was freezing back in NY. Three of us were newbies and three of us had experience which divided us into two camps: The Bunny Rippers and Team Shred. As a member of the Bunny Ripper contingent, I went from basically having surfed one time (in Costa Rica at a beach break), to catching decent sized waves by myself in a matter of days. We named ourselves the bunny rippers because on day one, our entire group was brought to a sizable reef break and our guide was like, "ok, here's your boards, go surf". With half of us not knowing wha...
Wild Racers Costa Rica brings elite competitors from around the world to race day and night covering a 820k course. Athletes will travel from the southeast of Panama, over the highest mountain of Chirripo towards the village of Tortuguero (Land of the Turtles) then travel to the Nicaraguan border in the north for the long haul and to the finish at Puerto Viejo Sarapiqui. Set in this exotic locale, athletes will extreme water kayak, mountain bike, abseil and wilderness trek, pushing themselves to the ultimate limits of human endurance. All will have to combat the physical and psychological challenge, having no reference point or no support from the outside world to guide them. In the spirit of a true expedition teams are truly ‘unsupported’, forgoing the comfort and assistance of suppor...
November 9, 2012 www.LifeofBrennan.com There are moments in life when you just need to be bold and follow your heart. For me it came just before the end of my sophomore year of college. I realized I was on a path where I’d most likely graduate, get a job, start a family, and work until retirement, and where many people may aspire to have all this, I knew I needed something different. With the help of a cousin I was able to get connected with an orphanage in Guatemala where I could volunteer. So I took a semester off and flew to Central America to begin what would be a life changing experience. I once heard that life is 10 percent of what happens to us and 90 percent of how we react to it, and by being immersed in that culture and living with those children I learned this lesson first...
A Journey Through Panama & Colombia: "Tweede Lustrumreis Concorde'98" Five years after Malaysia, we did our second anniversary trip. This time, we visited Panama & Colombia: After a short night in Panama City, our local guide "Panama Pete" took us mountain biking in the Gamboa Rainforest. Later that day, the Old Town (another UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Panama City's nightlife awaited us. The next morning, a hung-over bus ride and boat trip took us to an Indian village where we had lunch with the locals. From there, some heavy trekking brought us deeper into the jungle and abseiling from waterfalls was necessary to get out again. A few days at The Playa Blanca Beach Resort were next, it didn't have the white sandy beaches you'd expect at a resort with that name though. We spotted ...
The crew embarks on a 14 day adventure thru Panama, Brazil, and Chile for two hilariously action packed weeks of surfing, flying and living the life of a traveling surfer. They arrive in Panama and are greeted by local surfer Gary Saavedra and his brother Pimpling who guide the crew thru some of Panama’s best surf spots.
Imagine soaring through desert and mountain terrain more than a thousand feet above the ground – and not in a plane or helicopter. Instead of hiking or bike riding down trails, Bootleg Canyon Flightlines’ zip-line tour in Boulder City allows adventure seekers to “fly” and get a whole new perspective on the beautiful desert valley below. “These unique aerial trails attract, educate and amaze people,” said Ian Green, co-founder of the GreenHeart Conservation Company. “[It] allows them to follow the path of a bird. You will not find a more exhilarating trail in the world.” While Las Vegas provides several extreme outdoor adventures, Bootleg Canyon Flightlines proves to be one of a kind. “This ride is aided by nature,” said Green. “The freedom of silent flight – unless you like to scream –...
To read Island Intern Ben Brown's review of the dining experience at Manolo Caracol, visit http://amble.com/ambler/category/islandinterns/ Amble's favorite restaurant in Panama City may also be the darling dining spot of other Panama travelers, but probably for reasons all their own - the eclectic Manolo Caracol is always bringing something new to the table, and every visitor leaves with a unique experience in concept dining. It's a great place to stop in frequently, because the menu always changes to feature the freshest seafood available and the best in-season local produce. The décor is equally varied, a mixture of religious artifacts, funky accoutrements, and whichever fine art installation has most recently captivated owner Manolo Madueño. Although the variables keep things interes...
I went to Panama
To find out why it's called the tropic zone
The senoritas there had so much charm
They could even melt a heart of stone
A hot tamale gal she flashed me a smile
And I lost my heart right then
I thought I'd only stay down there for a day
Now I think I'll never leave again
In Panama those Panamamas
They live the life of a beautiful dream
Your life's a waste until you get a taste of the thrill
That you get from a tropical queen
[ guitar ]
Now kindly get me straight I think they're great
Those gals from Tennessee
But when they say si si in Panama
Then the trill is really different to me
Manana never comes down there
They live just for tonight
I take her in my arms beneath the beautiful palms
And it's heaven when I hold her tight
[ guitar ]
I'm making memories on balconies
Sombreros they fit me fine
I know that pretty soon I'll honeymoon
With that sweet chiquita of mine
Out on the edge of town we're gonna settle down
How happy we're gonna be
It takes a pepper pot from down old Panama
To catch a feller from Tennessee
