Ghana (i/ˈɡɑːnə/), officially called the Republic of Ghana, is a sovereign unitary presidential constitutional democracy, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean, in the subregion of West Africa. Spanning a land mass of 238,535 km2, Ghana is bordered by the Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, Togo in the east and the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean in the south. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" in Mande.
The territory of present-day Ghana has been inhabited for millennia, with the first permanent state dating back to the 11th century. Numerous kingdoms and empires emerged over the centuries, of which the most powerful was the Kingdom of Ashanti. Beginning in the 15th century, numerous European powers contested the area for trading rights, with the British ultimately establishing control of the coast by the late 19th century. Following over a century of native resistance, Ghana's current borders were established by the 1900s as the British Gold Coast. In 1957, it became the first sub-saharan African nation to declare independence from European colonisation.

Ghana is famous for its colorful traditional festivals and durbars celebrated yearly in different parts of the country. One of such festivals is Homowo, which is celebrated by the Ga ethnic group and highlighted at varying times by different quarters of the Gas of Accra. Homowo is derived from two Ga words: "Homo" meaning hunger, and "Wo," meaning to hoot at, hence the name hooting at hunger. Homowo, which is celebrated annually between August and September, is to commemorate that day when hunger was defeated, hooted at, and ridiculed. Dressed in traditional attire, the traditional rulers and elders gathered to see the chief priest peHrform some rituals to the gods for good health and to usher in the new season amidst traditional music and dance.

Health care delivery in Ghana leaves much to be desired especially in the rural areas. The country continues to record high infant and maternal mortality. Many people also die easily from preventable or treatable diseases. The situation has raised concerns on where Ghana stands with regard to provision of quality health care. Stakeholders are calling for more strict regulations in the practice of medicine in order to reduce mortality resulting from negligence of health practitioners.

Partnering with Jarratt Best (Public Engagement Officer with SickKids Foundation in Toronto), I was given the opportunity to create several videos that spoke to the issues facing children's health and health care in the developing world and what SickKids Foundation was doing with partners in these countries. This video was filmed in Ghana when we spent 10 days there in Accra and in Kpedze-Todze (Volta region) where we were graciously invited to spend a day with the children of that village. The concept was to present the contrasting stats & figures of children's health care between Canada and Ghana, spoken by the children of Ghana themselves and by the people who are making a difference to eliminate these disparities. This is the 1st of several videos we are producing from that trip. ...

The Ghana Emergency Medicine Collaborative intends to develop an innovative, interdisciplinary, sustainable, team-based medical training program to improve the management of injury and acute medical conditions, while retaining skilled health care providers in Ghana. The collapse is considered to be the worst stadium disaster in African history. The public response to the stadium disaster prompted the Ghanaian government to construct a new national Accident and Em...

And in the soft grey matter, Contained within the head. SYNOPSIS: As technological progress pushes forward in the overdeveloped world, enormous piles of obsolete computers are thrown away and recycled. Pushed out of sight and sent to the coast of West Africa these computers end up in waste grounds such as Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana. Eventually the metals are sold, melted and reformed into new objects to be sold – it is a strange system of recycling, a kind of reverse...
Approximately 290,000 people are currently living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. For every one reported case, there are four unreported cases. In Ghana and many parts of Africa, HIV/AIDS is associated with promiscuity due to a lack of education regarding the modes of transmission of the virus. As a result, women living with the virus are stigmatized and are treated as the outcasts of society. Many women with HIV are kicked out of their households and abandoned by their families. They have no financial or emotional support and cannot afford their anti-retroviral drugs, which prevent mother-to-child transmission. These drugs cost 5 Ghana Cedis per month, equivalent to about 3 US dollars. Please watch this film and support the work of the West African AIDS Foundation, an organization empowering wome...

Ghana is on high alert over possible terror threats. A memo from Ghana's Immigration Service says the country is the next target for Islamist militants. They say Togo too is apparently at risk. This follows high-profile attacks this year in Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire. The memo says the National Security Council Secretariat has evidence from neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire from the interrogation of a man suspected of orchestrating the attack on March 13 in which 18 people were killed. It has also ordered immigration agents on the northern border with Burkina Faso to be extra alert and said patrols should be stepped up along informal routes between the two countries. President John Mahama is calling on people to be vigilant.

In 2008 a small team of us traveled to Ghana, West Africa. Our Canadian friend Paul was already living in Accra and felt there was real potential for tourism in this part of the world. We thought there might be a chance for us to shoot some footage of West Africa with a positive slant - something missing and seldom seen through most media. We proposed to the Ghanaian tourism board a 22-minute promotional video showcasing travel potential around the country. They loved the idea. They supplied us with a vehicle, a guide, and a signed letter from the minister of tourism - essentially, the keys to the country. The promotional tourism video was successfully completed shortly after returning to Canada. I wanted to edit a second video that showed more of the personal side of our trip. This video...

time in ghana
Senegal-Ghana
The trees were all decked out in their best fall colors
There was a snap in the air
When you eased down the window
And the New York sun brought out the highlights in your
hair
And gently, gently
The constellations aligned
And as we crossed over the Frogneck's Bridge
I had something on my mind
When we rolled down the street
In the cool of the morning
I could feel the new day dawn
And somebody had gone and turned the waterworks on
And slowly, surely
I saw the whole story unwind
I had never loved anyone like I loved you
And I had something on my mind
