The drought-stricken South Pacific nation of Tuvalu is facing a water crisis that is likely to continue until at least January.
Many small island states including the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Maldives as well as islands in the Caribbean including Grenada, Antigua and the twin islands of St Kitts Nevis and Nevis all have a number of things in common .. .. the most critical being their minimal contributions to global warming. But the effects on them as a result of global warming…. is at a maximum.
Antigua is being affected by sea level rise…..Nevis ranked as the seventh smallest in the world has reportedly suffered a significant amount of land loss in the last 60 years. So too has the fourth smallest nation in the world: Tuvalu.
PBCJ’s Reporter Carol Francis spoke with Tuvalu’s prime minister in morocco and filed this report.

While most news headlines on climate change tend to emphasize, quite rightly, the existential threats on this tiny nation from sea-level rise, there are many other aspects of climate change impacts that have received less attention by the international community than they deserve, but have extraordinary impacts on communities' vulnerability.

Once again, Nauru has become a temporary home to hundreds of people seeking a new life in Australia. While the decision to send asylum seekers to the South Pacific island is in dispute locals hope it will provide a lifeline to the country. Nauru is just 21 square kilometres, and has a population of fewer than 10 thousand people. SBS correspondent Jeannette Francis travelled to Nauru to find that many local business owners believe the tiny economy will be revived by the influx of people. Taiwan's ongoing attempts to enter the United Nations have received support from an unlikely ally, the tiny Pacific nation of Tuvalu.
But not without a price - Taiwan provides a third of the country's GDP.
Taiwan has long jostled with China for allies in the South-Pacific and they've both boldly used promises of investment to win friends.

It is estimated that by 2015, the Carteret Islands will disappear under the sea. Already, the beaches are littered with fallen trees, their roots eroded by the tide. Rising sea levels have made it impossible for the islanders to grow anything apart from coconuts. They are now dependent on aid from PNG. Our houses are getting closer and closer to the sea’’,, complains one woman. Maybe one day, a tidal wave will sweep everyone away. The government plans to relocate people but many islanders refuse to move. As one states, ''If the island is lost, I'm lost too.''

Crossing the Tide, the Tuvalu Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale reflects on the plea of small island nations facing the effects of global climate change. This is manifested by rising sea levels and increasing severe storms causing floods, and ultimately threatens the future of these small island nations such as Tuvalu, located in the Pacific Ocean.
The Tuvalu Pavilion features a flooded pavilion. It connects the flooding of the Tuvalu to the flooding of Venice. Crossing the tide in the Tuvalu Pavilion over slightly submerged footbridges, visitors find themselves in an imaginary space — a dreamscape, consisting only of sky and water.
The Tuvalu Pavilion represents a natural environment, but one that is essentially manmade and is the work of the Taiwanese artist Vincent J.F. Huang. Huang has been working on issues related to climate change since 2005 and created his first art project on Tuvalu in 2010. In 2012 he joined the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Tuvalu on an official delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties 18 (UNFCCC COP 18) meeting in Doha, Qatar. From 2010 Vincent J.F. Huang has been closely connected to Tuvalu, visiting the Polynesian island nation on several occasions and keeping close contact with the Tuvalu government and community organizations on issues of climate change.
The Tuvalu Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale reveals a world consisting only of sky and water. The first chapter of the ancient Chinese book of Zhuangzi, "Free and Easy Wandering," describes such a world in the story of a giant fish named Kun who changes into a massive bird named Peng. When Peng beats his wings, the sea roils. Peng rises to enormous height. The sky is blue, and when the bird looks down, all is blue too.
The book of Zhuangzi is one of the foundation texts of Daoist philosophy. It considers ways for mankind to achieve happiness and freedom by living in harmony with the natural world, and to become "free and easy wandering." But the truth is that we are no longer living in accordance with nature, and instead we are facing many environmental disasters.
The Tuvalu Pavilion considers how artists like Vincent J.F. Huang have taken on climate change as the subject matter of their work, and connects to the overall theme of the 56th Venice Biennale, All the World’s Futures in approaching the “fresh appraisal of the relationship of art and artists to the current state of things.”

Tuvalu (
i/tuːˈvɑːluː/ too-VAH-loo or /ˈtuːvəluː/ TOO-və-loo), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia. It comprises three reef islands and six true atolls spread out between the latitude of 5° to 10° south and longitude of 176° to 180°, west of the International Date Line.
Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa and Fiji. Tuvalu has a population of 10,837 (2012 census). The total land area of the islands of Tuvalu is 26 square kilometres (10 sq mi).
The first inhabitants of Tuvalu were Polynesians. The pattern of settlement that is believed to have occurred is that the Polynesians spread out from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls, with Tuvalu providing a stepping stone to migration into the Polynesian Outlier communities in Melanesia and Micronesia.
In 1568, Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European to sail through the archipelago, sighting the island of Nui during his expedition in search of Terra Australis. In 1819 the island of Funafuti was named Ellice's Island; the name Ellice was applied to all nine islands after the work of English hydrographer Alexander George Findlay. The islands came under Britain's sphere of influence in the late 19th century, when each of the Ellice Islands was declared a British Protectorate by Captain Gibson of HMS Curacoa between 9 and 16 October 1892. The Ellice Islands were administered as British protectorate by a Resident Commissioner from 1892 to 1916 as part of the British Western Pacific Territories (BWPT), and then as part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony from 1916 to 1974.

Many small island states including the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Maldives as well as islands in the Caribbean including Grenada, Antigua and the twin islands of St Kitts Nevis and Nevis all have a number of things in common .. .. the most critical being their minimal contributions to global warming. But the effects on them as a result of global warming…. is at a maximum. Antigua is being affected by sea level rise…..Nevis ranked as the seventh smallest in the world has reportedly suffered a significant amount of land loss in the last 60 years. While most news headlines on climate change tend to emphasize, quite rightly, the existential threats on this tiny nation from sea-level rise, there are many other aspects of climate change impacts that have received less attention by the international community than they deserve, but have extraordinary impacts on communities' vulnerability.

While the decision to send asylum seekers to the South Pacific island is in dispute locals hope it will provide a lifeline to the country. Nauru is just 21 square kilometres, and has a population of fewer than 10 thousand people. Crossing the Tide, the Tuvalu Pavilion for the 56th Venice Biennale reflects on the plea of small island nations facing the effects of global climate change. This is manifested by rising sea levels and increasing severe storms causing floods, and ultimately threatens the future of these small island nations such as Tuvalu, located in the Pacific Ocean. The Tuvalu Pavilion features a flooded pavilion. It connects the flooding of the Tuvalu to the flooding of Venice. Crossing the tide in the Tuvalu Pavilion over slightly submerged footbridges, visitors find themselves in an imaginary space — a dreamscape, consisting only of sky and water. The Tuvalu Pavilion represents a natural environment, but one that is essentially manmade and is the work of the Taiwanese artist Vincent J.F. Huang. ...

It is estimated that by 2015, the Carteret Islands will disappear under the sea. Already, the beaches are littered with fallen trees, their roots eroded by the tide. Rising sea levels have made it impossible for the islanders to grow anything apart from coconuts. They are now dependent on aid from PNG. Our houses are getting closer and closer to the sea’’,, complains one woman. Maybe one day, a tidal wave will sweep everyone away. The government plans to relocate people but many islanders refuse to move. As one states, ''If the island is lost, I'm lost too.''

In 2012 he joined the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Tuvalu on an official delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties 18 (UNFCCC COP 18) meeting in Doha, Qatar. From 2010 Vincent J.F. Huang has been closely connected to Tuvalu, visiting the Polynesian island nation on several occasions and keeping close contact with the Tuvalu government and community organizations on issues of climate change.

The first chapter of the ancient Chinese book of Zhuangzi, "Free and Easy Wandering," describes such a world in the story of a giant fish named Kun who changes into a massive bird named Peng. When Peng beats his wings, the sea roils. Peng rises to enormous height. The sky is blue, and when the bird looks down, all is blue too.
The book of Zhuangzi is one of the foundation texts of Daoist philosophy. It considers ways for mankind to achieve happiness and freedom by living in harmony with the natural world, and to become "free and easy wandering." But the truth is that we are no longer living in accordance with nature, and instead we are facing many environmental disasters.

A popular tourist destination in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is the smallest country in Asia in terms of area and population. There are over 1,192 coral islands in the Maldives, which are spread over 90,000 sq.km, making it one of the world's most dispersed countries. The country was once the colony of many empires, the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British, but became an independent country in 1965. Today, the Maldives has a vibrant tourism economy due to its famous white sand beaches and crystal blue waters.
7 – Saint Kitts and Nevis - 261 km²
The Mother Colony of the West Indies, these 2 islands in the Caribbean were some of the first islands to be occupied by Europeans. Its economy is dependent on tourism, agriculture, and small manufacturing industries. The islands also provide fantastic diving sites due to abundant marine life. A major sugar exporter for centuries, the large plantations are now beautiful estates that have been converted into hotels and resorts.
6 – Liechtenstein - 160 km2
A German-speaking country, this is the only nation in the world to be completely located in the Alps. Located between Switzerlandand Austria,Liechtenstein is the richest country in the world by GDP per capita, with the lowest unemployment rate (1.5%). Getting into the country is a little tricky without an airport. Visitors must go through Switzerland's Zurich Airport to reach this Alpine country that's still ruled by a prince.
5 – San Marino - 61 km²
Surrounded completely by Italy, San Marino is also known as the Most Serene Republic of San Marino. Claiming to be the oldest surviving sovereign state in the world, it is also one of the wealthiest in terms of GDP per capita. The 3rd smallest country in Europe, it has a population of only 30,000, boasting of one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.
4 – Tuvalu - 26 km²
Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is located in the Pacific Ocean, north east ofAustralia. There are about 10,000 inhabitants, with 8km of roads, and only 1 hospital present on the main island. The country was once a British territory but became independent in 1978. A difficult place to get to, tourism is not very significant. In 2010, less than 2,000 visitors came to Tuvalu, with 65% of them coming for business.
3 – Nauru - 21 km²
An island nation located east of Australia, Nauruis the smallest island country in the world. It was known in the 1980's for a booming phosphate mining but is now a quiet island off the radar of tourists. Formerly known as Pleasant Island, its phosphate resources are now depleted, leading to a 90% national unemployment rate, with the remaining 10% employed by the government. Nauru is also known as the country with the most obese people in the world, with 97% of its men and 93% of women being obese or overweight. Because of this, Nauru is also home to the world's highest level of type 2 diabetes, with 40% of its population suffering from the ailment.

Under Part II of this report you will find comment by Tj Wiets who said the round grey ball at Tuvalu is just the sun reflecting on the ocean. He then provided 2 videos which prove his point:

As for the clouds racing from Nuku Hiva to Tuvalu, which are grey round the edges I imagine that the white in the middle is the sun's brilliance flashing. This seems to be a logical explanation. Just as well I didn't post all my footage! Phew! Many thanks to Tj Wiets.

Since I began this report, Super Typhoon Haiyan was upgraded to Category Five. Haiyan will be referred to as Yolanda in the Philippines, already devastated by Typhoons Nari, Krosa, and the 7.3 earthquake in Bohol.

I don't think these typhoons and earthquakes are an act of God or Mother Nature. Those huge balls of "grey matter" measuring 500 to 1000 km across are in no way natural, so we have to get to the bottom of this and stop it happening over and over again.
Been trying to get this video out for over a week. My own computer bugs when I want to upload from Windows Movie Maker so I had to cut this into several sections. In Part II you will see (with a bit of luck) what looks like spontaneous generation of huge clouds 500 km in length, 200 km wide, which move or rather leap across the ocean at a speed of 500 km per hour. I captured several of these huge clouds just West of the Marquesas Islands and they sped to Tuvalu, preying on other white normal clouds, tripling in size each time. They covered the distance from Niku Hiva to Funafuti, which is 2773 miles, or 4463 km, in 4 hours, judging by the time loop on Wundermap. You can check this out yourself on Wundermap, with the VIS visible satellite setting on, from midnight onwards, as the daylight arrives across the Pacific. These clouds look ferocious, you can't miss them! Perhaps they are being generated by power lines on the ocean bed? What looks like deliberate weather warfare may be accidental pollution by electrical and magnetic installments on the islands. Whatever, thanks for watching and I look forward to reading your comments and hearing your opinion. Gotta go see how the Philippines are doing since Category Five Haiyan hit this morning.

You can see the island of Kayangel through Typhoon Haiyan's eye, which was 8 nautical miles wide (if i remember right) if you go to Wundermap, put InfraRed satellite on and change the Timeline Settings on toolbar at bottom of the screen to Wednesday 6th November at 8pm. I still don't know how they survived that!

1. In the southern Pacific Ocean, few island nations enchant visitors quite like Tuvalu. Comprising nine small islands with a population of only about 10,000, Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries in the world. Formerly part of a larger area islands under British control, Polynesians on Tuvalu voted to separate from the Gilbert Island in 1974. Four years later, Tuvalu gained independence.
2. Funafuti Conservation Area is one of the best places to catch some beautiful natural sights including reefs, channel and a gorgeous lagoon. Thanks to its marine life diversity, it is an excellent spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.
3. Nui, Tuvalu is one of the most important islands in Tuvalu. The permanent settlement is on the main islet of Fenuatapu in Nui, Tuvalu. The Nui Island consists of 11 main islets. All the islets are separated by passages. The sea gushes through the passages from ocean to the lagoon. During low tide, people can walk across these passages from islet to islet.
4. The National Research Council in the United States predicted that by 2100 global sea levels would rise 55 inches due to climate change. If that prediction holds true, the rising sea levels could damage the country’s coral roots and wipe out Tuvalu altogether. By 2012, there was already coastal erosion, a result of the rising sea level, excavation for construction, and extreme weather.
5. The origins of the people of Tuvalu are addressed in the theories regarding migration into the Pacific that began about 3000 years ago. During pre-European-contact times there was frequent canoe voyaging between the nearer islands including Samoa and Tonga. Eight of the nine islands of Tuvalu were inhabited; thus the name, Tuvalu, means "eight standing together" in Tuvaluan. Possible evidence of fire in the Caves of Nanumanga may indicate human occupation for thousands of years.
6. The tiny island-nation of Tuvalu receives a yearly payment of almost $2.2 million for doing nothing at all. The is the money that the Tuvalu government receives from royalties from the country’s domain name, .tv! This ammount is about ten per cent of the government's total revenue. Domain name income paid most of the cost of paving the streets of Funafuti and installing street lighting in mid-2002.
7. Parents and children in Tuvalu usually do not have cordial relationships. However, relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, adoptive parents and adoptive children, and mother’s brother and sister’s child tend to be warm and affectionate. Within the family, you will notice that there is the most constrained cross-sex interaction between siblings, first, second, and even third cousins. Even today, they have to avoid each other totally except for things considered most necessary.

Tuvalu is a small country of 9 islands and atolls in the Pacific Ocean with a population of around 11,000 people and a land area of around 26 square kilometers (about a tenth of the size of Washington D.C.). It is one of the smallest and most remote nations in the world!
The islands are about halfway between Australia and Hawaii.
Tuvalu has been inhabited for at least 2000 years, and maybe even 8000 years. Tuvalu, which was formerly known as the Ellice islands, came under British control in 1877. The islands were occupied by American forces and were bombed by the Japanese during World War Two. In 1974, the islands were granted self-governance under the control of Kiribati (another British colony and future island nation). The islands successfully voted to secede from Kiribati in 1975. Tuvalu was granted independence as a member of the commonwealth in 1978, and it became a member of the United Nations in 2000.
The island is predominantly populated by Polynesians, but Micronesians make up 4% of the population.
Protestantism was brought by missionaries to the islands, and 97% of the population belongs to the congregationalist Church of Tuvalu. There are small numbers of Seventh-Day Adventists and Baha’is on the island.
Tuvalu is currently a republic with a prime minister, Enele Sopoaga.
Farming and fishing are the main economic activities, as the island has few natural resources. Some Tuvaluans work mining phosphates on the neighboring island nation of Nauru.
The islanders have their own language, Tuvaluan. It and English are the official languages.
The nation is at risk of ceasing to exist as rising sea levels caused by climate change could drown the islands underwater.

You can dive, snorkel and yacht in the ocean surrounding the islands. On the islands you can see traditional dances, American World War Two artifacts, and the national game of Ano (which translates to just “the ball”), which is similar to volleyball.

Tuvalu is a small country of 9 islands and atolls in the Pacific Ocean with a population of around 11,000 people and a land area of around 26 square kilometers (about a tenth of the size of Washington D.C.). It is one of the smallest and most remote nations in the world!
