When my immersion blender stopped working recently I had a hard time figuring out whether I should replace it with something similar or get a "real" blender, which I haven't had in years. I went on a week-long blender review bender, visited a couple of stores, and ended up getting both this and a Vitamix S30 and having my own blender showdown. At the end of the day, the Vitamix didn't work as well for what I needed, but here are the pros and cons of each if it helps someone else in the same situation. Also, I found it super helpful to go see a few different models in person to get a sense of the size and how they feel. Things I blended: smoothies, salad dressing, crushed ice/snow, tofu pudding, frozen banana "ice cream", almond flour, almond butter. They both could handle all of these well if you work with their individual quirks. Vitamix S30 pros - http://amzn.to/2d3NJJS - Variable control is nice because you can use it on the lowest setting that you need for a given task, at lower levels the noise isn't so bad - The first thing you notice about the machine is how sturdy and hefty the base and blade assembly are, it feels very well made. Ninja looks and feels cheap in comparison. - I think the design on the Vitamix is much better, I'd have to problem keeping it on the counter. I'd rather keep the Ninja hidden - The single-serve container feels upscale like those Bodum double-walled cups - Tamper is a plus for some - The smaller size Vitamix was exactly what I was looking for with the versatility of the single serve and small pitcher Vitamix S30 cons - The single-serve cup narrows at the bottom which is nice ergonomically but when you're blending things get stuck at the top and you have to shake. You really need to slice things pretty small (the manufacturer says 1" pieces) to get them to blend. - Value for money - even though I found it for a fantastic deal, it was more than 2x the cost of the Ninja. At the end of the day it didn't have enough advantages to make it worth it. - I found it hard to scoop out anything that was thick and small volume from the pitcher, you have to unscrew the blades and dig around them with a spoon if you have something the texture of yogurt or guacamole - Vitamix is supposed to make smoother smoothies but I didn't see any appreciable difference. Tried orange carrot in both blenders and it was gritty in both. Tried kale/apple/strawberry/chia in both and it was smooth in both. I gravitate towards the see through ones, the insulated one is nice but you can't see the progress as it's blending - There are 2 different blades, one more like a vitamix blade and one of the crazy multi-tiered ninja blades. They do different jobs and it increases the versatility of the machine to have both. The compact pitcher is the perfect size for me also. Haven't tried the dough hook but it's nice this was included. - The one job the Ninja couldn't do well at first was almond butter (10 minutes compared to 2 minutes in the Vitamix) but I bought the spice grinder attachment and it churned some almond butter in 90 seconds. Highly recommend getting that attachment. - The auto smoothie setting really does work well, I haven't had to shake the container mid-blend to mix up the ingredients like I did with the Vitamix (and with the Oster Blend N Go which I had been using for the last 3 years - good budget smoothie maker) Ninja Compact system cons: - #1,2,3 - it's loud. When people say it's loud, it is painfully loud. Like I have to plug my ears when I use this on most of the settings. - All the settings are programmed to last a certain amount of time, so if you just want to blend something for a few minutes until it gets to your desired level of smoothness, you have to keep pressing the button every minute or so to start it up again - Having a bunch of electronic controls makes me nervous, those things don't tend to last as long as analog dials. I think it could do with fewer buttons also, one smoothie setting would do - I find it not so easy on the eyes and there are blenders at lower price points that don't feel so plasticky and cheap - Mixed reputation on long-term quality and customer service from other reviews I've read. Purchased from a retailer with an excellent return policy just in case I'm hoping these companies keep improving this evolving category of multi-functional compact blenders...someone's got to make a quiet version sometime, right?
