George Demosthenes Savalas (Greek: Γεώργιος Δημοσθένης Σαβάλας) (December 5, 1924 - October 2, 1985) was an American actor.
Born in New York City to immigrants from Greece, he served in the Pacific War as a United States Navy gunner. After studying drama at Columbia University, Savalas embarked on a successful career as a stage actor and acting instructor. He later appeared in several films, most notably Kelly's Heroes.
He is best known for his role as Detective Stavros on the TV series Kojak. He was often credited as "Demosthenes" or "George Demosthenes" to avoid confusion[citation needed] with his better-known older brother, Telly Savalas. In his later years, George recorded a popular Greek-language record and toured with his band, appearing at such venues as Carnegie Hall[citation needed]. He returned to the stage, appearing in a number of off-Broadway productions before illness forced him to retire. In the 1970s, he did adverts in the United Kingdom for Wimpy Bar chain[citation needed].
Butch McCain is an American actor, broadcaster, writer, producer and one half of the singing songwriting team, The McCain Brothers. Butch has appeared numerous films including MGM's cult classic Bio-Dome, Roger Corman's remake of Humanoids from the Deep, and in Bruce Campbell's My Name Is Bruce, where he played dual roles as the singing sheriff and a unibrowed farmer.
Butch and his brother Ben, also wrote and performed the theme song for My Name is Bruce, "The Legend of Gaun-Di". Butch has made numerous appearances in comedy skits on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show on Fox.
Born in Muleshoe, Texas, and raised on a farm near Bovina in Parmer County, Texas, Butch and his older brother, Ben, were encouraged by their parents, Rose and Leslie McCain, to pursue their interests in performing and athletics while also helping on the family farm.
While in high school in 1975, Butch started working at radio station KLVT in Levelland, Texas. He worked his way through South Plains College with two part-time jobs, a roustabout in the oil fields for Mobile Oil during the afternoons and as a disc jockey at night. After graduating from South Plains College he transferred to West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas, and quickly found work at KGNC Radio in Amarillo doing afternoon drive.
Aristotelis "Telly" Savalas (Greek: Αριστοτέλης "Τέλι" Σαβάλας; January 21, 1922 – January 22, 1994) was an American film and television actor and singer, whose career spanned four decades. Best known for playing the title role in the 1970s crime drama Kojak, Savalas was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Birdman of Alcatraz (1962). His other movie credits include The Young Savages (1961), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Battle of the Bulge (1965), The Dirty Dozen (1967), The Scalphunters (1968), supervillain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Kelly's Heroes (1970), Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971), Inside Out (1975), and Escape to Athena (1979).
Savalas, the second of five children, was born as Aristotelis Savalas in Garden City NY, to Greek American parents Christina (née Kapsalis), a New York City artist who was a native of Sparti, and Nick Savalas, a Greek restaurant owner. When he entered Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York, he initially only spoke Greek, but learned English and graduated in 1940. After graduation he worked as a lifeguard, but on one occasion was unsuccessful at rescuing a man from drowning, an event which would haunt Savalas for the remainder of his life. When he entered Columbia University School of General Studies Savalas took courses including English language, radio, and psychology, graduating in 1948. At that time he fell in love with radio and television, which led to his interest in acting. Savalas also gained life experience with a three-year period (1943–1946) in the US Army during World War II, working for the US State Department as host of the Your Voice of America series, then at ABC News, before beginning an acting career in his late thirties. In 1950 Savalas hosted a popular radio show called The Coffeehouse in New York City.
Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra, /sɨˈnɑːtrə/, (December 12, 1915 – May 14, 1998) was an American singer and film actor.
Beginning his musical career in the swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, Sinatra became an unprecedentedly successful solo artist in the early to mid-1940s, after being signed to Columbia Records in 1943. Being the idol of the "bobby soxers", he released his first album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra in 1946. His professional career had stalled by the 1950s, but it was reborn in 1953 after he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in From Here to Eternity.
He signed with Capitol Records in 1953 and released several critically lauded albums (such as In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice 'n' Easy). Sinatra left Capitol to found his own record label, Reprise Records in 1961 (finding success with albums such as Ring-a-Ding-Ding!, Sinatra at the Sands and Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim), toured internationally, was a founding member of the Rat Pack and fraternized with celebrities and statesmen, including John F. Kennedy. Sinatra turned 50 in 1965, recorded the retrospective September of My Years, starred in the Emmy-winning television special Frank Sinatra: A Man and His Music, and scored hits with "Strangers in the Night" and "My Way".
Dean Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti; June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995) was an American singer, film actor, television star and comedian. Martin's hit singles included "Memories Are Made of This", "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Sway", "Volare" and "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?". Nicknamed the "King of Cool", he was one of the members of the "Rat Pack" and a major star in four areas of show business: concert stage/night clubs, recordings, motion pictures, and television.
Martin was born in Steubenville, Ohio, to Italian parents, Gaetano and Angela Crocetti (née Barra). His father was from Montesilvano, Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy, and his mother was an Italian of part Neapolitan and part Sicilian ancestry. Martin was the younger of two sons. His brother was named Bill. Martin spoke only Italian until he started school. He attended Grant Elementary School in Steubenville, and took up the drums as a hobby as a teenager. He was the target of much ridicule for his broken English and ultimately dropped out of Steubenville High School in the 10th grade because he thought that he was smarter than his teachers. He delivered bootleg liquor, served as a speakeasy croupier, was a blackjack dealer, worked in a steel mill and boxed as welterweight. He grew up a neighbor to Jimmy the Greek.
