This is the first short introduction of the new STS Shoottech AR480 Mark2 crossbow. An amazing product really!
As a contrast to this very elaborate, complex weapon, a homemade crossbow is also shown. It shoots the same 12mm (1/2") steel balls, but it is made from a single, cheap wooden plank. Seven screws and one nail plus the rubber bands are the entire parts that are needed to build it - with the most basic tools. Of course the performance does not even come close! Still, a fun alternative.
The AR480 will be tested more thoroughly soon, including distance shooting and destruction tests.

When you make non gunpowder weapons at home, you are usually restricted to single shotcontraptions or manual repeaters at best. But of course the ultimate goal is to build a full auto machine gun style weapon!
That is by no means very easy. Muscle powered weapons are simply not quick enough for a true Brat-a-tat action. Gas powered engines are too heavy and clumsy for a portable weapon.
Of course there are modern battery drills - plenty of torque in small packages, lightweight and affordable. It makes sense to use those as power sources. But how to turn rotational motion into a linear cocking process?
We finally, at last, had success using a rack and pinion mechanism. The wooden gears had to be reinforced with massive aluminum for a reliable operation, but the result is very convincing.
It is a reality - true machine gun feeling!
Now on to optimization.

I show how to make a mini crossbow out of wooden coffee stir sticks. The crossbow is pretty easy to make and uses basic materials and tools. It is a fun project and shoots projectiles surprisingly far. I used two different types of bolts for the projectiles, one was made from wood skewers a needle and tape. The other was made from a needle, q tips and tape. The needles were held in place with thread wrapping around them that was soaked in glue. Take all of the necessary safety precautions if making/using this as it can potentially be dangerous.

Crossbow
A crossbow is a type of weapon based on the bow and consisting of a horizontal bow-like assembly mounted on a stock. It shoots projectiles called bolts or quarrels. Historically, crossbows played a significant role in the warfare of East Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean. The invention of the crossbow in ancient China caused a major shift in the role of projectile weaponry. The traditional bow and arrow had long been a specialized weapons system which required a considerable degree of lifetime training, physical strength, and expertise to operate with any degree of efficiency. In many cultures, bowmen were considered a separate and superior caste, despite being usually drawn from the common class, as their archery skill-set was essentially developed from birth (similar to many horseman cultures) and was impossible to reproduce outside a pre-established cultural tradition, which many nations lacked. In contrast, the crossbow was the first projectile weapon to be simple, cheap, and physically undemanding enough to be operated by large numbers of conscript soldiers, thus enabling virtually any nation to field a potent force of ranged crossbowmen with little expense beyond the cost of the weapons themselves. In Europe, crossbows became widely used in the early medieval period, and this led to the ascendancy of large mercenary armies of crossbowmen (best exemplified by the Genoese crossbowmen), and the eventual demise of the heavily armored aristocratic knight, as armies became progressively dominated by conscripts equipped with increasingly powerful ranged projectile weapons.

A Dream Came True: Home Made Full Auto Crossbow!
When you make non gunpowder weapons at home, you are usually restricted to single shotcontraptions or manual repeaters at best. But of course the ultimate goal is to build a full auto machine gun style weapon! That is by no means very easy. Muscle powered weapons are simply not quick enough for a true Brat-a-tat action. Gas powered engines are too heavy and clumsy for a portable weapon. Of course there are modern battery drills - plenty of torque in small packages, lightweight and affordable. It makes sense to use those as power sources. But how to turn rotational motion into a linear cocking process? We finally, at last, had success using a rack and pinion mechanism. The wooden gears had to be reinforced with massive aluminum for a reliable operation, but the result is very convincing...

How to Make a Mini Crossbow
I show how to make a mini crossbow out of wooden coffee stir sticks. The crossbow is pretty easy to make and uses basic materials and tools. It is a fun project and shoots projectiles surprisingly far. I used two different types of bolts for the projectiles, one was made from wood skewers a needle and tape. The other was made from a needle, q tips and tape. The needles were held in place with thread wrapping around them that was soaked in glue. Take all of the necessary safety precautions if making/using this as it can potentially be dangerous. I show how to make a mini crossbow out of wooden coffee stir sticks. The crossbow is pretty easy to make and uses basic materials and tools. It is a fun project and shoots projectiles surprisingly far. I used two different types of bolts for the projectiles, one was made from wood skewers a needle and tape. The other was made from a needle, q tips and tape. The needles were held in place with thread wrapping around them that was soaked in glue. Take all of the necessary safety precautions if making/using this as it can potentially be dangerous.

The medieval crossbow was called by many names, most of which were derived from the word ballista, a torsion siege engine resembling a crossbow.
