Nine years on from his death, the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remains one of the most controversial, and undoubtedly the most famous figure in Palestinian history. For many people remains a symbol of the Palestinian struggle for independence. Now a forensic report by Swiss scientists has confirmed what many have suspected or believed for the past nine years: that there is evidence to support the theory that Arafat was poisoned with the radioactive chemical polonium. Yasser Arafat, the leader of PLO, addressed the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in 13 November 1974. His speech known as "The Olive Brach Speech of Arafat" in the pages of history. Arafat became the first representative of a non-governmental organization to address a plenary session of the UN General Assembly. Arafat was also the first leader to address the UN while wearing a holster, although it did not contain a gun.

Our producer scolded the PLO's Swedish representative which had effect. Many had long speculated that Arafat was poisoned, and a breaking news report from Al Jazeera on July 3, 2012 confirmed that there were significant traces of unsupported polonium on his clothes even 8 years after his death. His widow is now pushing to exhume the body for irrefutable confirmation that he was poisoned. Who had the motive to assassinate Yasser Arafat? Israel of course! But let's not forget that he was rushed to a French military hospital as soon as he started showing symptoms of his "illness" so this assassination could not have been a success without the help of the French government and intelligence. CIA complicity, you ask? Is that even a question?

In 2007, former Israeli Member of Knesset wrote for the Guardian:
"On the way back from Arafat's funeral in 2004, I ran into Jamal Zahalka, a member of the Israeli Knesset. I asked him if he believed that Arafat was murdered. Zahalka, a doctor of pharmacology, answered "Yes!" without hesitation. That was my feeling too. But a hunch is not proof. It is only a product of intuition, common sense and experience.
Recently we got a kind of confirmation. Just before he died last month, Uri Dan, Ariel Sharon's loyal mouthpiece for almost 50 years, published a book in France. It includes a report of a conversation Sharon told him about, with President Bush. Sharon asked for permission to kill Arafat and Bush gave it to him, with the proviso that it must be done undetectably. When Dan asked Sharon whether it had been carried out, Sharon answered: "It's better not to talk about that." Dan took this as confirmation."

President Nelson Mandela awarded the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat South Africa's highest honour for foreigners at a ceremony in Cape Town.
Arafat is on a three-day visit to South Africa, aimed at cementing ties that go back to when the African National Congress was fighting white rule and Arafat headed the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as an exile.
Afterwards, Arafat condemned the terrorist attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
The Palestinian leader was accorded the formal welcome of a full head of state in Cape Town on Tuesday.
This is an indication of the respect the South African president Nelson Mandela has for his long time supporter Yasser Arafat.
The two of them inspected a military parade and listened to the Palestinian national anthem as part of the ceremony to honour Arafat.
In giving Arafat the Order of Good Hope, (Class One Grand
Cross Gold) Mandela is recognising the support given to the A-N-C by him and the Palestine Liberation Organisation while Mandela was spending 27 years in prison.
Arafat joins the ranks of previous recipients such as French President Jacques Chirac, U-S President Bill Clinton as well as the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and former Indonesia President Suharto.
They are all recognised for their support of the A-N-C's struggle against apartheid.
In return Arafat presented Mandela with the Star of Holy Jerusalem medal.
He praised Mandela for bringing democracy to South Africa as well as supporting the creation of a Palestinian state.
Afterwards Arafat condemned the attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

"We condemn it completely, and we (are) against all these activities. We are looking for peace and just peace everywhere and I have sent my letters to his excellency President Clinton carrying my condolences and also to the presidents of Kenya and Tanzania. Arafat will also hold talks with Deputy President Thabo Mbeki and the leaders of all South Africa's largest opposition parties.

Mohammed Yasser Abdel Rahman Abdel Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa (/ˈærəˌfæt, ˈɑːrəˌfɑːt/;Arabic: محمد ياسر عبد الرحمن عبد الرؤوف عرفات; 24 August 1929 – 11 November 2004), popularly known as Yasser Arafat (Arabic: ياسر عرفات , Yāsir `Arafāt) or by his kunya Abu Ammar (Arabic: أبو عمار , 'Abū `Ammār), was a Palestinian leader. He was Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), and leader of the Fatah political party and former paramilitary group, which he founded in 1959. Originally opposed to Israel's existence, he modified his position in 1988 when he accepted UN Security Council Resolution 242. Arafat and his movement operated from several Arab countries. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fatah faced off with Jordan in a brief civil war. Forced out of Jordan and into Lebanon, Arafat and Fatah were major targets of Israel's 1978 and 1982 invasions of that country.

English/Nat President Nelson Mandela awarded the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat South Africa's highest honour for foreigners at a ceremony in Cape Town. Arafat is on a three-day visit to South Africa, aimed at cementing ties that go back to when the African National Congress was fighting white rule and Arafat headed the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as an exile. Afterwards, Arafat condemned the terrorist attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The Palestinian leader was accorded the formal welcome of a full head of state in Cape Town on Tuesday. This is an indication of the respect the South African president Nelson Mandela has for his long time supporter Yasser Arafat. The two of them inspected a military parade and listened to the Palestinian national anthem as part of the ceremony to honour Arafat. In giving Arafat the Order of Good Hope, (Class One Grand Cross Gold) Mandela is recognising the support given to the A-N-C by him and the Palestine Liberation Organisation while Mandela was spending 27 years in prison. Arafat joins the ranks of previous recipients such as French President Jacques Chirac, U-S President Bill Clinton as well as the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and former Indonesia President Suharto. They are all recognised for their support of the A-N-C's struggle against apartheid. In return Arafat presented Mandela with the Star of Holy Jerusalem medal. He praised Mandela for bringing democracy to South Africa as well as supporting the creation of a Palestinian state. Afterwards Arafat condemned the attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We condemn it completely, and we (are) against all these activities. We are looking for peace and just peace everywhere and I have sent my letters to his excellency President Clinton carrying my condolences and also to the presidents of Kenya and Tanzania. Yasser Arafat, the leader of PLO, addressed the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in 13 November 1974. His speech known as "The Olive Brach Speech of Arafat" in the pages of history. Arafat became the first representative of a non-governmental organization to address a plenary session of the UN General Assembly. Arafat was also the first leader to address the UN while wearing a holster, although it did not contain a gun.

"On the way back from Arafat's funeral in 2004, I ran into Jamal Zahalka, a member of the Israeli Knesset. I asked him if he believed that Arafat was murdered. Zahalka, a doctor of pharmacology, answered "Yes!" without hesitation. That was my feeling too. But a hunch is not proof. It is only a product of intuition, common sense and experience.
Recently we got a kind of confirmation. Just before he died last month, Uri Dan, Ariel Sharon's loyal mouthpiece for almost 50 years, published a book in France. It includes a report of a conversation Sharon told him about, with President Bush. Sharon asked for permission to kill Arafat and Bush gave it to him, with the proviso that it must be done undetectably. When Dan asked Sharon whether it had been carried out, Sharon answered: "It's better not to talk about that." Dan took this as confirmation."

Arafat is on a three-day visit to South Africa, aimed at cementing ties that go back to when the African National Congress was fighting white rule and Arafat headed the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as an exile.
Afterwards, Arafat condemned the terrorist attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.
The Palestinian leader was accorded the formal welcome of a full head of state in Cape Town on Tuesday.
This is an indication of the respect the South African president Nelson Mandela has for his long time supporter Yasser Arafat.
The two of them inspected a military parade and listened to the Palestinian national anthem as part of the ceremony to honour Arafat.
In giving Arafat the Order of Good Hope, (Class One Grand
Cross Gold) Mandela is recognising the support given to the A-N-C by him and the Palestine Liberation Organisation while Mandela was spending 27 years in prison.
Arafat joins the ranks of previous recipients such as French President Jacques Chirac, U-S President Bill Clinton as well as the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and former Indonesia President Suharto.
They are all recognised for their support of the A-N-C's struggle against apartheid.
In return Arafat presented Mandela with the Star of Holy Jerusalem medal.
He praised Mandela for bringing democracy to South Africa as well as supporting the creation of a Palestinian state.
Afterwards Arafat condemned the attacks on the U-S embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

In 1993 Yasser Arafat had promised me an interview while he was in exile in Tunisia but in the end our crew had waited for four days with no result. Our producer scolded the PLO's Swedish representative which had effect. When Arafat one month later visited Sweden for talks with the Prime Minister, Carl Bildt, I was the only Swedish journalist who got an interview with the PLO leader. Yasser Arafat, the leader of PLO, addressed the United Nations General Assembly for the first time in 13 November 1974. His speech known as "The Olive Brach Speech of Arafat" in the pages of history. Arafat became the first representative of a non-governmental organization to address a plenary session of the UN General Assembly. In addition to the constant media focus Mrs. Arafat faced the challenge of being a Westernised woman living in a male dominated community.

"The first criticism, the first difficulties, it's not easy, jealousy, conspiracies you just hear them and you just see the person and just laugh. You have to be yourself. You know what's been done behind but you are just yourself."

Mrs. Arafat, a Palestinian Christian, grew up in Paris. She met her husband while working as his secretary at P-L-O headquarters in Tunis in the late 1980s.

"I miss the intellectual part of Paris, the intellectual part of the life in Paris I mean the theaters the reading, the little cafe, the window shopping you know, you miss things like this but you miss mostly liberty."

Setting up a house in Gaza wasn't easy for Mrs. Arafat, mainly because - for years - her husband has to sleep in a different place every night, to avoid possible assassination attempts.
But now the Palestinian leader's schedule is more 'normal': he leaves the house at ten in the morning often to return 16 hours later at two a.m.
Mrs. Arafat spends her days caring for their child, Zahwa, and sometimes receives visiting delegations or Palestinians with problems they want solved.
She says she wishes she could do more to help her husband with his work.

"Sometimes a woman wants to help her husband but it's too much difficult to help Yasser Arafat because his problem is not personal but the problem of all the Palestinian people. So you feel frustrated, you can't help him you just sometimes keep silent because you don't want to hurt his feelings."

Like any mother, Soha would have liked to bring up her daughter in a normal environment, away from the constant armed bodyguards.
Relaxing at the couple's villa in Gaza, Soha reveals a little secret about the Palestinian leader - he never sings nursery rhymes to his 8-month-old daughter.
He whistles to her.

"He does not show his emotions because some leaders - they don't know to show that they have a weak point. Sometimes I say 'No, to love a daughter or a wife is a strong point, not a weak point' - but it's in the mentality, and I cope with it."
