What are PMI and PMP®
Project Management Institute or PMI is a not for profit organization that offers a certification program for project practitioners for all educational and skill levels. PMI is based in the USA and has local chapters across the globe. Therefore, if you are based in Singapore, you can look for a PMI chapter in Singapore. Such local chapters conduct regular knowledge sharing and networking sessions for people interested in project management.
Project Management Professional® or PMP® on the other hand is one of the certifications awarded by PMI. It is a credential industry recognized and demanded worldwide. For many of the project management jobs, it is a mandatory qualification
Application Requirements for the PMP® Exam
PMI-PMP® certificate is an “experience” as well as “knowledge” based certification. This means, certain prerequisites are to be met in order to be able to apply for this certification.
The prerequisites depend upon a person’s formal education.
As shown in the table, a professional needs to have at least 4,500 hours of project management experience along with a bachelor’s degree. A professional, whose highest formal education is a high school degree, will require 7,500 hours of project management experience.
The experience of 36 months within last 8 years in the table implies that those 4,500 hours of project management experience should have happened within the last 8 years prior to the application. Similarly, for the experience of 60 months within last 8 years, 7,500 hours of leading and directing project tasks should have happened within the last 8 years.
PMP® Exam Syllabus
There are 5 process groups, 10 knowledge areas, and 47 project management processes.
To understand the syllabus, you need to understand the following terms—process groups, knowledge areas, and processes. Let us first discuss process group.
The project management discipline is divided into five broad process groups.
When a new project starts, it is first in the project initiation phase, moving to planning phase, then to execution, followed by monitoring and controlling, and finally it is closed. Project execution and monitoring and controlling processes go hand in hand.
Therefore, when a new project is initiated, all processes of project initiation process group should be applied to the project. Similarly, when the project is being closed, all processes of project closing group should be applied. For instance, “Identify Risks” is a process of project planning group. So when the project is in planning phase, you must identify all the risks of the project.
Next, let us see what knowledge area is.
As per PMBOK® Guide, there are 10 knowledge areas. A knowledge area is a set of specific processes performed to meet a project objective.
Let us now consider processes. There are 47 processes. These processes might be accomplished in the project planning process group and few others in project monitoring and controlling process group.

Few aspects of financing a home confuse people more than the concept of PMI, which stands for Private Mortgage Insurance. It is insurance a mortgage company requires the borrower to purchase whenever there is less than a 20% down payment. Since a lower down payment could represent a higher risk of default, the borrower pays for this insurance to protect the mortgage company in case the borrower defaults by not paying the loan back.
PMI is included in your monthly mortgage payment, however there are programs that allow the borrower to pay it up front or finance it instead. The actual amount you pay will vary based on your total loan amount and the percentage of your down payment. The higher your down payment between 0-20%, the lower your PMI rate will be. You can avoid PMI by putting 20% or more down on the loan, paying it upfront at closing, or as we've seen in some markets, separating the loan amount into 2 loans (known as piggyback mortgages).
Depending on the type of loan, PMI does not last forever. If you have a conventional loan, you can contact your mortgage company and request they remove the PMI once you reach 20% equity in your home. So when you see you have paid your loan balance down to 80% of the purchase price (or refinance value), contact them. If you feel the value of the home has risen enough to where you may now have 20% equity, then you can ask them to remove it, although you may have to pay for an appraisal to prove it.
It's a different story if you have an FHA loan. For any FHA loans after April 1st, 2013 with less than 10% down, PMI stays for the lifetime of the loan. So the only way to remove it in that instance is to refinance into a conventional mortgage or sell the home and start a new loan for the new property. FHA loans started before that date will have PMI that automatically falls off when you reach 22% equity or you can ask for it to be removed at 20% equity like with conventional loans.
The good news is that for many people, PMI paid on the loan throughout the year is tax deductible as long as your income is within certain limits (currently 110k for a married couple, 55k for an individual). PMI also helps many people get their foot in the door to homeownership who would otherwise not be able to save such a large sum for a down payment. If you don't want to pay PMI, you'll need to have a 20% down payment.

A PMP certificate is valid for only three years. Post completion of this three year period. It can be renewed for another three years.
PMI measures Project Management Experience in units of PDU. PDU means Professional Development Unit.
So, if you attend a Project Management Class of 1 hour by an expert, its equivalent to say 1 PDU. If you write a White Paper on Project Management related topic, it may be equivalent to 5 PDU. PMI has detailed guideline on what kind of project management activity amounts to how many PDUs. You can check their website for more details.
Every three years, one must have acquire 60 PDUs to retain their PMP certificate. So first time, when you write the exam, you become PMP for 3 years.
After this period, to renew your PMP credentials, you need to submit proof that you acquired at least 60 PDUs in last three year and pay the PMI certificate renewal fee, your certificate gets renewed for another three years. You can conveniently do this online at www.pmi.org
Finally, lets look at what is PMBOK?
PMBOK means Project Management Body of Knowledge. Its a Book that PMI releases every four years. The latest version of the PMBOK is version 4 and it was released in June 2009. PMBOK acts as a Text Book for the PMP Exam.

Few aspects of financing a home confuse people more than the concept of PMI, which stands for Private Mortgage Insurance. It is insurance a mortgage company requires the borrower to purchase whenever there is less than a 20% down payment. Since a lower down payment could represent a higher risk of default, the borrower pays for this insurance to protect the mortgage company in case the borrower defaults by not paying the loan back.
PMI is included in your monthly mortgage payment, however there are programs that allow the borrower to pay it up front or finance it instead. The actual amount you pay will vary based on your total loan amount and the percentage of your down payment. The higher your down payment between 0-20%, the lower your PMI rate will be. You can avoid PMI by putting 20% or more down on the loan, paying it upfront at closing, or as we've seen in some markets, separating the loan amount into 2 loans (known as piggyback mortgages).
Depending on the type of loan, PMI does not last forever. If you have a conventional loan, you can contact your mortgage company and request they remove the PMI once you reach 20% equity in your home. So when you see you have paid your loan balance down to 80% of the purchase price (or refinance value), contact them. If you feel the value of the home has risen enough to where you may now have 20% equity, then you can ask them to remove it, although you may have to pay for an appraisal to prove it.
It's a different story if you have an FHA loan. For any FHA loans after April 1st, 2013 with less than 10% down, PMI stays for the lifetime of the loan. So the only way to remove it in that instance is to refinance into a conventional mortgage or sell the home and start a new loan for the new property. FHA loans started before that date will have PMI that automatically falls off when you reach 22% equity or you can ask for it to be removed at 20% equity like with conventional loans.
The good news is that for many people, PMI paid on the loan throughout the year is tax deductible as long as your income is within certain limits (currently 110k for a married couple, 55k for an individual). PMI also helps many people get their foot in the door to homeownership who would otherwise not be able to save such a large sum for a down payment. If you don't want to pay PMI, you'll need to have a 20% down payment.
