Târgu Mureș

Târgu-Mureș (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈtɨrɡu ˈmureʃ]; Hungarian: Marosvásárhely, Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈmɒroʃvaːʃaːrhɛj]; also known by other alternative names) is the seat of Mureș County in the north-central part of Romania. It is the 16th largest Romanian city, with 134,290 inhabitants as of 2011.

Names and etymology

The current Romanian name of the city, Târgu Mureș, is the equivalent with the Hungarian Marosvásárhely, both meaning "market on the Mureș (Maros) [River]". Târg means "market" in Romanian and vásárhely means "marketplace" in Hungarian. The Hungarian Marosvásárhely is sometimes shortened to Vásárhely in local colloquial Hungarian language.

The first written reference of the city was in the Papal registry in Latin as Novum Forum Siculorum in 1332, and later as Sekulvasarhel (modern Hungarian: Székelyvásárhely), meaning "new market of the Székelys", in 1349. Other Latin names for the town included Agropolis and Areopolis.

In 1616, Gabriel Bethlen gave the name Marosvásárhely to the newly upgraded royal free city. The Romanian name for the city, Oșorhei was a phonetic derivation from Vásárhely while the German name for the town, Neumarkt am Mieresch (also shortened to Neumarkt or Marktstadt; in Transylvanian Saxon, Nai Mark or Nai Muark), can be translated as New Market

FC Ripensia Timișoara

Fotbal Club Ripensia Timișoara is a football team from the Romanian city of Timişoara. It was founded in 1928 by Dr. Cornel Lazăr and it lasted only twenty years before folding due to lack of funds in 1948.

In 2012, the club was brought back to life in the Timiş County League.

Ripensia was the first Romanian football club to turn professional, and because of this status they were unable to compete in the national league until the 1932-33 season. After being accepted in the national system, Ripensia quickly became one of the best teams in the country, winning four leagues and two Romanian Cups in their short history.

The team's colors are red and yellow.

History

It was founded in 1928 by Dr. Cornel Lazăr, a famous promoter of football in the Banat region, and the former president of Chinezul Timişoara. The players came from Chinezul Timișoara, C.A.T. and Poli Timişoara. Due to its professional status, until 1932-1933 (the first season of the National League - Divizia A), the team and its players could not participate in official national competitions.

Mureș (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈmureʃ], Hungarian: Maros megye) is a county (județ) of Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania, with the administrative centre in Târgu Mureș.

Name

In Hungarian, it is known as Maros megye ([ˈmɒroʃ ˈmɛɟɛ]), and in German as Kreis Mieresch. Under Austro-Hungarian administration, from 1876 to 1918, there was a county with similar name, Maros-Torda County.

Geography

The county has a total area of 6,714 km².

The northeastern side of the county consists of the Călimani and Gurghiu Mountains and the sub-Carpathian hills, members of the Inner Eastern Carpathians. The rest of the county is part of the Transylvanian Plateau, with deep but wide valleys.

The main river crossing in the county is the Mureș River. The Târnava Mare River and the Târnava Mică River also cross the county.
