In the arts, a medium is a material used by an artist or designer to create a work.
In the art and science of architecture, the design and construction of buildings and interiors, infrastructure and other physical structures are created. It can involve multiple disciplines of brickwork, carpentry, engineering, stonemasonry and many other skills.
The art of carpentry and woodworking is by a skilled craftsperson or joiner, who designs and builds buildings, furniture and other objects.
In drawing, "media" refers to both the material that is manually applied and to the base onto which it is applied. The media applied can be many things but the method of application is a stick type object with a point (not a brush) that transfers particles of media to the base. The point of the stick can be as minute as it can be large.
The most commonly practiced form of drawing or sketching is with a pencil and paper, however the wide and varied use of materials applied can be graphite, fusain, pastel, and ink among other things. Bases can be paper, plaster, canvas, wood or basically anything that accepts the medium applied from the point of the stick.
Mixed media, in visual art, refers to an artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed.
There is an important distinction between "mixed-media" artworks and "multimedia art". Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" work, but not a work of "multimedia art." The term multimedia art implies a broader scope than mixed media, combining visual art with non-visual elements (such as recorded sound, for example) or with elements of the other arts (such as literature, drama, dance, motion graphics, music, or interactivity).
When creating a painted or photographed work using mixed media it is important to choose the layers carefully and allow enough drying time between the layers to ensure the final work will have structural integrity. If many different media are used it is equally important to choose a sturdy foundation upon which the different layers are imposed.
“When we value a work of art, we have to understand the medium in which it was produced,” says Simon Stock, and expert in Impressionist and Modern art. No wonder medium is probably the first thing our specialists look at. And while there tends to be an unwritten hierarchy of material, lead by oil-on-canvas for painting and marble for sculpture, some artist’s ideas might translate most brilliantly in pastel on paper or lithography. As Episode 9 reminds us, a many great artists constantly experimented with a range of methods and means. Here's an easy-to-do demo to create one-of-a-kind artwork using fluid acrylics and acrylic inks, pre-mixed with acrylic pouring medium. We've also used a Princeton Catalyst Silicone Blade to move the paint around on the canvas. Allowing the paint to drip down the sides creates visual interest around the entire work. We didn't elevate the canvas before pouring, but the paint can be easily trimmed off the paper and back of the canvas with scissors. Working with acrylic pouring medium creates striking and usually unpredictable patterning. This is a great way to loosen up your style and allow the medium to do a lot of the work!
Once applied, there are a number of ways the transfer can be finished, French dry brushing, white chalk wax were chosen for this piece as it was put on to an unknown paint finish which dissolved a little when wetted. Stunning finish all the same!
