The R1200GS is enjoying an odd two-stage transition into 2017. Already available in dealers is an updated GS which boasts a few visual nips and tucks, as well as drivetrain revisions with an anti-judder damper on the transmission output drive, and modifications to the selector drum and transmission shafts. The bikes have also been made Euro4 compliant.
Now BMW have revealed the full 2017 version with a raft of further dynamic improvements, plus two new versions to pick from in the model line-up. A base model is available, as are three package options (Dynamic, Comfort and Touring), and now you can also pick between new Rallye or Exclusive models. The existing R1200GS Adventure continues in 2017, but we don’t expect a full model update until 2018.

R1200GS Exclusive
The Exclusive model is the road-focused version of the new duo, aimed at riders who want a GS because it delivers a superb everyday riding experience, exceptional touring capability, and has the versatility to go anywhere when the road (or lack of one) demands.
It’s also aimed at riders who want all the GS sophistication without being too shouty in terms of colours, or Action Man add-ons that hint at global travel pretentions.
At the core of this subtle approach is the ‘Iced Chocolate metallic’ paintjob. The fuel tank side trim panels are finished in ‘Monolith metallic matt’ and also feature bold R1200GS decals on each side. The frame is powder-coated in Agate Grey metallic matt, while the drivetrain is all finished in black, with gold-coloured brake calipers providing a flash of contrast.
There are no other special parts with this version, meaning that it’s effectively a bit of blank canvas for owners to spec to their taste – from Pro rider modes through to the new self-leveling next-generation Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension, and myriad luggage and protection add-ons.
R1200GS Rallye
While the new Exclusive option doesn’t add a great deal to the model line-up in terms of diversity, the new Rallye really does. The R1200GS aftermarket catalogue has always been big enough to exceed a pannier’s weight limit, meaning that you could build pretty much whatever version you want, but this new version panders to those who wanted the stock GS blended with some of the more off-road focused cues from the GS Adventure – without having to buy the more imposing GSA.
The GS Rallye comes on cross-spoke laced rims for improved off-road capability and versatility, and while they still come on road tyres, you can spec it to arrive on knobblies. Owners can also remove the luggage bridge and passenger footrests, blanking off the resultant holes with covers that are provided with the bike.
The Rallye also gets a raft of little touches to differentiate it further, including a Rallye seat, sports windshield, radiator and frame guard, and wider enduro footrests. Suspension upgrades are also available if you want to really go tonto off-road.

As a long term owner of a "standard" R1200 GS I have been itching to try a GS Adventure. This video is my review of the updated 2017 R1200 GS Adventure. Many thanks to the great team at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead for making this review possible.

The 2016 BMW R1200GS is a refinement of everything BMW Motorrad has learnt over the years with many of the latest electronic innovations fitted to this adventure style motorcycle.
In this video, and yes it's a little longer than many of the others at around 11 minutes, we give our opinion of the bike after riding it over some 2,000 kilometres in both off road and bitumen conditions.
There are definitely faster adventure bikes, but there are few around with the level of sales success of the GS ... and for good reason. This is one fantastic package.

BMW GS
The BMW GS series of dual purpose off-road/on-road BMW motorcycles have been produced from 1980, when the R80G/S was launched, to the present day. The GS refers to either Gelände/Straße (German: off-road/road) or Gelände Sport. GS motorcycles can be distinguished from other BMW models by their longer travel suspension, an upright riding position, and larger front wheels – typically 19 to 21 inch. In May 2009, the 500,000th GS was produced, an R1200GS model.
GS models
The GS has been available with a range of different engines, including single-cylinder, twin-cylinder water-cooled and twin-cylinder air- ("Airheads") and air/oil-cooled ("Oilheads" and "Hexheads").
Airheads
The first shaft driven GS model was the R80G/S with a 797.5 cc air-cooled, flat-twin boxer engine. The BMW 247 engine, which was also fitted to many other bikes in the BMW range, is known as an airhead, because it relies on airflow across the cylinder heads and cylinder 'barrels' to provide most of the cooling for the engine. The most valued version was the R80G/S-PD "Paris-Dakar" model featuring a larger tank, which was launched in celebration of the R80G/S wins in the Paris Dakar Rally. In certain markets a 649.6 cc R65GS version was also available. These early machines used a combined rear suspension and drive swingarm called a Monolever.

BMW R1200GS
The BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure are motorcycles manufactured in Berlin, Germany by BMW Motorrad, part of the BMW group. It is one of the BMW GS family of dual sport motorcycles. Both motorcycles have an 1,170 cc (71 cu in), two-cylinder boxer engine with 4-valves per cylinder. The Adventure has a larger capacity fuel tank and longer travel suspension. As of 2012, BMW's R1200GS bikes are their top-selling models.
History
At its launch in 2004, the R1200GS was 30 kg (66 lb) lighter than the R1150GS it replaced, and produced 100 bhp (75 kW), an increase of 19%. BMW continued to produce the R1150GS Adventure, releasing a final run-out special edition model, before launching the R1200GS Adventure at the end of 2005, for the 2006 model year.
Upgrades for model year 2008 included increased power to 105 bhp (78 kW), a new Integral ABS II anti-lock braking system was released without servo assistance and new options were added including electronic suspension adjustment (ESA) and the Automatic Stability Control (ASC) traction control system.

2017 BMW R1200GS review
The R1200GS is enjoying an odd two-stage transition into 2017. Already available in dealers is an updated GS which boasts a few visual nips and tucks, as well as drivetrain revisions with an anti-judder damper on the transmission output drive, and modifications to the selector drum and transmission shafts. The bikes have also been made Euro4 compliant. Now BMW have revealed the full 2017 version with a raft of further dynamic improvements, plus two new versions to pick from in the model line-up. A base model is available, as are three package options (Dynamic, Comfort and Touring), and now you can also pick between new Rallye or Exclusive models. R1200GS Exclusive
The Exclusive model is the road-focused version of the new duo, aimed at riders who want a GS because it delivers a superb everyday riding experience, exceptional touring capability, and has the versatility to go anywhere when the road (or lack of one) demands.
It’s also aimed at riders who want all the GS sophistication without being too shouty in terms of colours, or Action Man add-ons that hint at global travel pretentions.
At the core of this subtle approach is the ‘Iced Chocolate metallic’ paintjob. The fuel tank side trim panels are finished in ‘Monolith metallic matt’ and also feature bold R1200GS decals on each side. The frame is powder-coated in Agate Grey metallic matt, while the drivetrain is all finished in black, with gold-coloured brake calipers providing a flash of contrast.
There are no other special parts with this version, meaning that it’s effectively a bit of blank canvas for owners to spec to their taste – from Pro rider modes through to the new self-leveling next-generation Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension, and myriad luggage and protection add-ons.
R1200GS Rallye
While the new Exclusive option doesn’t add a great deal to the model line-up in terms of diversity, the new Rallye really does. The R1200GS aftermarket catalogue has always been big enough to exceed a pannier’s weight limit, meaning that you could build pretty much whatever version you want, but this new version panders to those who wanted the stock GS blended with some of the more off-road focused cues from the GS Adventure – without having to buy the more imposing GSA.
The GS Rallye comes on cross-spoke laced rims for improved off-road capability and versatility, and while they still come on road tyres, you can spec it to arrive on knobblies. Owners can also remove the luggage bridge and passenger footrests, blanking off the resultant holes with covers that are provided with the bike.
The Rallye also gets a raft of little touches to differentiate it further, including a Rallye seat, sports windshield, radiator and frame guard, and wider enduro footrests. Suspension upgrades are also available if you want to really go tonto off-road.

As a long term owner of a "standard" R1200 GS I have been itching to try a GS Adventure. This video is my review of the updated 2017 R1200 GS Adventure. Many thanks to the great team at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead for making this review possible.
I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-
GoPro HD Hero 2 and 4 cameras
Nikon D7100 DSLR for static and video shots with various lenses
Lavalier microphone and sellotape for in helmet audio - £9 from E-Bay
Power Director 8 for the PC (for video editing)
Lavalier microphone for in garage audio - £20 E-Bay

The 2016 BMW R1200GS is a refinement of everything BMW Motorrad has learnt over the years with many of the latest electronic innovations fitted to this adventure style motorcycle.
In this video, and yes it's a little longer than many of the others at around 11 minutes, we give our opinion of the bike after riding it over some 2,000 kilometres in both off road and bitumen conditions.
There are definitely faster adventure bikes, but there are few around with the level of sales success of the GS ... and for good reason. This is one fantastic package.

2017 BMW R1200GS review
The R1200GS is enjoying an odd two-stage transition into 2017. Already available in dealers is an updated GS which boasts a few visual nips and tucks, as well as drivetrain revisions with an anti-judder damper on the transmission output drive, and modifications to the selector drum and transmission shafts. The bikes have also been made Euro4 compliant. Now BMW have revealed the full 2017 version with a raft of further dynamic improvements, plus two new versions to pick from in the model line-up. A base model is available, as are three package options (Dynamic, Comfort and Touring), and now you can also pick between new Rallye or Exclusive models. R1200GS Exclusive
The Exclusive model is the road-focused version of the new duo, aimed at riders who want a GS because it delivers a superb everyday riding experience, exceptional touring capability, and has the versatility to go anywhere when the road (or lack of one) demands.
It’s also aimed at riders who want all the GS sophistication without being too shouty in terms of colours, or Action Man add-ons that hint at global travel pretentions.
At the core of this subtle approach is the ‘Iced Chocolate metallic’ paintjob. The fuel tank side trim panels are finished in ‘Monolith metallic matt’ and also feature bold R1200GS decals on each side. The frame is powder-coated in Agate Grey metallic matt, while the drivetrain is all finished in black, with gold-coloured brake calipers providing a flash of contrast.
There are no other special parts with this version, meaning that it’s effectively a bit of blank canvas for owners to spec to their taste – from Pro rider modes through to the new self-leveling next-generation Dynamic ESA semi-active suspension, and myriad luggage and protection add-ons.
R1200GS Rallye
While the new Exclusive option doesn’t add a great deal to the model line-up in terms of diversity, the new Rallye really does. The R1200GS aftermarket catalogue has always been big enough to exceed a pannier’s weight limit, meaning that you could build pretty much whatever version you want, but this new version panders to those who wanted the stock GS blended with some of the more off-road focused cues from the GS Adventure – without having to buy the more imposing GSA.
The GS Rallye comes on cross-spoke laced rims for improved off-road capability and versatility, and while they still come on road tyres, you can spec it to arrive on knobblies. Owners can also remove the luggage bridge and passenger footrests, blanking off the resultant holes with covers that are provided with the bike.
The Rallye also gets a raft of little touches to differentiate it further, including a Rallye seat, sports windshield, radiator and frame guard, and wider enduro footrests. Suspension upgrades are also available if you want to really go tonto off-road.

As a long term owner of a "standard" R1200 GS I have been itching to try a GS Adventure. This video is my review of the updated 2017 R1200 GS Adventure. Many thanks to the great team at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead for making this review possible.
I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-
GoPro HD Hero 2 and 4 cameras
Nikon D7100 DSLR for static and video shots with various lenses
Lavalier microphone and sellotape for in helmet audio - £9 from E-Bay
Power Director 8 for the PC (for video editing)

This was the demonstration that was happening throughout the Motorcycle Live 2015 event and it was a cracking demo and something that I think I will try and squeeze into my tight 2016 schedule
Simon Pavey and his team have developed their own unique programme for each level of training, that has been constantly refined to provide the best learning experience and most fun.
Our instructors are not just great off-road riders with years of experience either; we put as much emphasis on their teaching abilities, techniques and skill. Being a great rider counts for nothing if you can’t clearly convey your knowledge. We pride ourselves on our instructors and we are always learning and developing our own teaching abilities. We are one of the only schools in the world that has a dedicated instructor training program designed to help us all grow as off-road trainers and provide the best customer care, service and teaching environment we can.

The 2016 BMW R1200GS is a refinement of everything BMW Motorrad has learnt over the years with many of the latest electronic innovations fitted to this adventure style motorcycle.
In this video, and yes it's a little longer than many of the others at around 11 minutes, we give our opinion of the bike after riding it over some 2,000 kilometres in both off road and bitumen conditions.
There are definitely faster adventure bikes, but there are few around with the level of sales success of the GS ... and for good reason. This is one fantastic package.
