Local government is a form of public administration which, in a majority of contexts, exists as the lowest tier of administration within a given state. The term is used to contrast with offices at state level, which are referred to as the central government, national government, or (where appropriate) federal government and also to supranational government which deals with governing institutions between states. Local governments generally act within powers delegated to them by legislation or directives of the higher level of government. In federal states, local government generally comprises the third (or sometimes fourth) tier of government, whereas in unitary states, local government usually occupies the second or third tier of government, often with greater powers than higher-level administrative divisions.
The question of municipal autonomy is a key question of public administration and governance. The institutions of local government vary greatly between countries, and even where similar arrangements exist, the terminology often varies. Common names for local government entities include state, province, region, department, county, prefecture, district, city, township, town, borough, parish, municipality, shire, village, and local service district.
A government is the system by which a state or community is controlled. In the Commonwealth of Nations, the word government is also used more narrowly to refer to the collective group of people that exercises executive authority in a state. This usage is analogous to what is called an "administration" in American English. Furthermore, especially in American English, the concepts of the state and the government may be used synonymously to refer to the person or group of people exercising authority over a politically organized territory. Finally, government is also sometimes used in English as a synonym for governance.
In the case of its broad associative definition, government normally consists of legislators, administrators, and arbitrators. Government is the means by which state policy is enforced, as well as the mechanism for determining the policy of the state. A form of government, or form of state governance, refers to the set of political systems and institutions that make up the organisation of a specific government.

Long-time Congressman and former Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neill popularized the phrase “All politics is local,” calling attention to the robust influence local interests and issues can have on decision-making at the federal and state levels. Whitehall Mayor Jim Nowalk will take a similar perspective as he shares his observations and experiences based on 37 years of service to several local governments. Mayor Nowalk believes that local government is, in many ways, a model of American democracy and as such, can offer lessons from which the federal and state governments could benefit. With the political and social turmoil created by the 2016 presidential campaigns and the failure of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania to adopt a 2015-16 budget, these lessons in efficient and effective gov...

The intrusion of drones will change the way we work with governments and services thoroughly. In technical services, police, fire brigade, hospitals ... drones will indeed take over tasks efficiently and quickly. Some examples: inspection of roads, surveillance of areas, traffic flows monitored by police, quickly need the right information to be collected in hostage situations, riots, demonstrations, ..., people are missing and traced or burglars pursued, search for cannabis plantations, control major fires, etc But ... as a local or regional governor, are you ready for this? The anti-government movement in Kiev started in protest at Yanukovych's decision in late November to pull out of a landmark treaty with the EU, but has expanded to demand his resignation. Escalating violence from government forces in the early morning of 30 November caused the level of protests to rise, with 400,000–800,000 protesters demonstrating in Kiev on the weekends of 1 December and 8 December. In the weeks since, protest attendance has fluctuated from 50,000 to 200,000 during organized rallies. In response to anti-protest laws announced on 16 January 2014 and enacted on 21 January in Ukraine, a standoff between protesters and police began on 19 January that was precipitated by a series of riots in central Kiev on Hrushevskoho Street, outside Dynamo Stadium and adjacent to the ongoi...
