Nirupa Roy born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara (4 January 1931 -- 13 October 2004) was an Indian actress who appeared in Hindi films.
She was married to Kamal Roy at a very young age. They have two sons, Yogesh and Kiran. In 1946, Roy and her husband responded to an advertisement in a Gujarati paper looking for actors. She was selected and started her acting career with the Gujarati film Ranakdevi. The same year she acted in her first Hindi film, Amar Raj. One of her popular films was Do Bigha Zameen (1953). She largely played mythological characters in the films of the 1940s and 50s. Her image of a goddess was very strong and people would visit her home and seek her blessings.
Among her co-stars were Trilok Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Balraj Sahni and Ashok Kumar.
In the 1970s, her roles as mother to the characters played by Amitabh Bachchan made her name synonymous to the impoverished suffering mother. Her role in Deewar (1975) and its dialogues with reference to a mother and son are used as clichés. Throughout her career of over 60 years in movies, she has acted in over 250 movies. she did slow down considerably in the 1980s, but did make a comeback in 1999 with Lal Badshah.
Her end came quickly on October 13, 2004, at the age of 73, when she passed away after a cardiac arrest in Bombay.
She will always be remembered, not only as the 'mother of Bollywood' for her roles in movies like Gunsundari, Rani Rupmati, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony and many others.
Reel life stories seems to be shaping up in real life as well for the tragedy queen, late Nirupa Roy whose real-life sons have now turned against each other over a property dispute.
Her sons Yogesh and Kiran who were embroiled in a dispute over her spacious apartment at Nepean Sea Road, Mumbai, are now staking claims over her bedroom.
After the actress’s husband Kamal died in 2015, son Kiran moved to the High Court, alleging his elder brother of "threatening and intimidating" him to gain "complete control" of the house.
The petition which was filed through advocate Zulfiquar Memon who said that Nirupa had left all her properties to Kiran, and husband Kamal Roy in his last will too named Kiran as the sole owner of the house.
However, the keys of the apartment are still with the elder son Yogesh, but the court’s orders are still awaited.

Kokila was born on January 4, 1931 in Valsad, Gujarat, India, in the Gujarati-speaking Balsara family.
She was married to Kamal Roy at a very young age, and shortly thereafter in 1946 both husband and wife decided to make a career on the silver screen. They traveled to Bombay, both applied, but only Kokila was chosen to act in a Gujarati movie, Ranakdevi, followed by Amar Raj, and Gunsundari in 1948. She was primarily effective in creating the Gujarati film industry. This is how Nirupa Roy was born.
She went on to act in many movies, initially as the leading lady then in various roles of a variety of Hindu Goddesses, so much so that people actually lined up to seek her blessings. From 1970s on she was type-cast to play the role of the mother for a number of leading actors, from Dev Anand to Amitabh Bachchan. She was perhaps the only actresses to have played the role of mother to Dharmendra and his son, Sunny Deol, albeit in different movies. In 1955 she acted as Dev Anand's mother, even though she is about 8 years younger than him.
A Capricorn, she then went on to act in movies like Do Bigha Zameen, Tangewali, and Garam Coat, a brand of movies which later came to be known as 'realistic movies'.
Her success has been reflected in 3 awards from 1955 to 1964 for her role in Munimji, Chhaya, and Shehnaai. She is also known for her trilogy with Bharat Bhushan namely Kavi Kalidas, Samrat Chandragupt, and Rani Rupmati.
But her most memorable role was yet to come in Deewar, opposite Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh. Dialogues for this movies, as like Sholay, are still remembered and talked about.

Synopsis - Raja Azaad Singh rules over his people with compassion and fairness, and as result this region prospers. His wife, Durga, gives birth to a son, and there is considerable jubilation amongst his subjects. Then the British decide to take over his region, Azaad fights bravely, but he is outnumbered, both he and Durga are taken prisoner and made to work as slaves. Loyal subjects assist in getting their son out of the region, where he is adopted by a kind woman Jamuna and her husband. Years later, while Durga, who has lost the use of her vocal chords, and Azaad are still slaves, their son, now named Raju, drives a horse-carriage (tonga) with a horse named Badal and a loyal dog named Moti; woos a proud and snobbish Rajkumari named Ruby, the daughter of Britisher Dr. Harry. When the British find out about Raju's royal blood, they enmesh Azaad and him in web of lies of deceit, forcing them to a combat with each other in an open arena. Reema Lagoo died Thursday morning after a cardiac arrest at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai.
She played the typical Indian mom in films and popular TV shows and was frequently cast in films starring Salman Khan, including Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, and Maine Pyar Kiya. She also played Shah Rukh Khan’s mom in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Lagoo was quintessentially the middle- or upper-middle-class Indian woman of her time, a blend of the stereotypical Indian sanskar (culture) and the modern-age attitude that a bad situation can be changed with one’s own deeds. In Vastaav (1999), she was memorably powerful as a mother who kills her own son, played by Sanjay Dutt, after he is driven mad by the burdens of his criminal activities. She doesn’t her motherly love stop her from walking down the righteous path. She shoots him to free him from his messed up life.
Actress Reema Lagoo's last rites were held in Mumbai's Oshiwara crematorium on Thursday afternoon. Ms Lagoo, who worked in film, TV and on stage, was taken to Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital early morning after complaining of chest pain. It was diagnosed as cardiac arrest and she died a little after 3 am. Reema Lagoo was 59. Her funeral was attended by several former colleagues, some of whom also posted messages for her on Twitter. Actor Aamir Khan visited Ms Lagoo's family at home with his wife Kiran Rao, and was later photographed at the funeral. "This is very tragic. We are still in shock. She had no major ailment that we knew about," Aamir, 51, told reporters about his co-star of films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Rangeela. Aamir's ex-wife Reena Dutta also attended the funeral.

Reema Lagoo died Thursday morning after a cardiac arrest at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. She played the typical Indian mom in films and popular TV shows and was frequently cast in films starring Salman Khan, including Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, and Maine Pyar Kiya. She also played Shah Rukh Khan’s mom in Kal Ho Naa Ho. Lagoo was quintessentially the middle- or upper-middle-class Indian woman of her time, a blend of the stereotypical Indian sanskar (culture) and the modern-age attitude that a bad situation can be changed with one’s own deeds. In Vastaav (1999), she was memorably powerful as a mother who kills her own son, played by Sanjay Dutt, after he is driven mad by the burdens of his criminal activities. She doesn’t her motherly love stop her from walking down the righteous path. She shoots him to free him from his messed up life. Actress Reema Lagoo's last rites were held in Mumbai's Oshiwara crematorium on Thursday afternoon. Ms Lagoo, who worked in film, TV and on stage, was taken to Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital early morning after complaining of chest pain. It was diagnosed as cardiac arrest and she died a little after 3 am. Reema Lagoo was 59. Her funeral was attended by several former colleagues, some of whom also posted messages for her on Twitter. Actor Aamir Khan visited Ms Lagoo's family at home with his wife Kiran Rao, and was later photographed at the funeral. "This is very tragic. We are still in shock. She had no major ailment that we knew about," Aamir, 51, told reporters about his co-star of films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Rangeela. Throughout her career of over 60 years in movies, she has acted in over 250 movies. she did slow down considerably in the 1980s, but did make a comeback in 1999 with Lal Badshah.
Her end came quickly on October 13, 2004, at the age of 73, when she passed away after a cardiac arrest in Bombay.

Roy was mostly known for portraying character roles of the Indian mother. She played leading roles in her early films and started playing mother roles during the 1970s and 1980s. Her acting career spanned more than 50 years, and she acted in more than 275 films. She was referred to as the "queen of misery" in Hindi film circles.
Nirupa Roy was born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara in Valsad, Gujarat. She was married to Kamal Roy when she was 15 and moved to Mumbai. They have two sons, Yogesh and Kiran. She changed her first name when she entered the film industry. She was very friendly with actress Shyama. She died, after having a cardiac arrest, in Mumbai on 13 October 2004 at the age of 73. She was regarded as the greatest Mother of all times in Bollywood. She was Gujarati and taught children Gujarati before she acted in films.
In 1946, Roy and her husband responded to an advertisement in a Gujarati paper looking for actors. She was selected and started her acting career with the Gujarati film Ranakdevi. The same year she acted in her first Hindi film, Amar Raj. One of her popular films was Do Bigha Zameen (1953). She largely played mythological characters in the films of the 1940s and 50's. Her image of a goddess was very strong and people would visit her home and seek her blessings. Among her co-stars were Trilok Kapoor (with whom she played in eighteen movies[1]), Bharat Bhushan, Balraj Sahni (Garam Coat, 1955) and Ashok Kumar.
In the 1970s, her roles as mother to the characters played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor made her name synonymous to the impoverished suffering mother. Her role in Deewar (1975) and its dialogues with reference to a mother and son are used as clichés

Kokila was born on January 4, 1931 in Valsad, Gujarat, India, in the Gujarati-speaking Balsara family.
She was married to Kamal Roy at a very young age, and shortly thereafter in 1946 both husband and wife decided to make a career on the silver screen. They traveled to Bombay, both applied, but only Kokila was chosen to act in a Gujarati movie, Ranakdevi, followed by Amar Raj, and Gunsundari in 1948. She was primarily effective in creating the Gujarati film industry. This is how Nirupa Roy was born.
She went on to act in many movies, initially as the leading lady then in various roles of a variety of Hindu Goddesses, so much so that people actually lined up to seek her blessings. From 1970s on she was type-cast to play the role of the mother for a number of leading actors, from Dev Anand to Amitabh Bachchan. She was perhaps the only actresses to have played the role of mother to Dharmendra and his son, Sunny Deol, albeit in different movies. In 1955 she acted as Dev Anand's mother, even though she is about 8 years younger than him.
A Capricorn, she then went on to act in movies like Do Bigha Zameen, Tangewali, and Garam Coat, a brand of movies which later came to be known as 'realistic movies'.
Her success has been reflected in 3 awards from 1955 to 1964 for her role in Munimji, Chhaya, and Shehnaai. She is also known for her trilogy with Bharat Bhushan namely Kavi Kalidas, Samrat Chandragupt, and Rani Rupmati.
But her most memorable role was yet to come in Deewar, opposite Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh. Dialogues for this movies, as like Sholay, are still remembered and talked about.
Throughout her career of over 60 years in movies, she has acted in over 250 movies. she did slow down considerably in the 1980s, but did make a comeback in 1999 with Lal Badshah.
Her marriage with Kamal Roy resulted in the birth of a son, Kiran, and 2 daughters. She was known to be very close to her son.
She was very friendly with yesteryear actress Shyama. She received one more award in 2003.
Her end came quickly on October 13, 2004, at the age of 73, when she passed away after a cardiac arrest in Bombay.
She will always be remembered, not only as the 'mother of Bollywood' for her roles in movies like Gunsundari, Rani Rupmati, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony and many others.

Synopsis - Raja Azaad Singh rules over his people with compassion and fairness, and as result this region prospers. His wife, Durga, gives birth to a son, and there is considerable jubilation amongst his subjects. Then the British decide to take over his region, Azaad fights bravely, but he is outnumbered, both he and Durga are taken prisoner and made to work as slaves. Loyal subjects assist in getting their son out of the region, where he is adopted by a kind woman Jamuna and her husband. Years later, while Durga, who has lost the use of her vocal chords, and Azaad are still slaves, their son, now named Raju, drives a horse-carriage (tonga) with a horse named Badal and a loyal dog named Moti; woos a proud and snobbish Rajkumari named Ruby, the daughter of Britisher Dr. Harry. When the British find out about Raju's royal blood, they enmesh Azaad and him in web of lies of deceit, forcing them to a combat with each other in an open arena. Watch how father and son unknowingly fight each other, knowing fully well that only one of them will survive to tell this tale.

She played the typical Indian mom in films and popular TV shows and was frequently cast in films starring Salman Khan, including Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, and Maine Pyar Kiya. She also played Shah Rukh Khan’s mom in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Lagoo was quintessentially the middle- or upper-middle-class Indian woman of her time, a blend of the stereotypical Indian sanskar (culture) and the modern-age attitude that a bad situation can be changed with one’s own deeds. In Vastaav (1999), she was memorably powerful as a mother who kills her own son, played by Sanjay Dutt, after he is driven mad by the burdens of his criminal activities. She doesn’t her motherly love stop her from walking down the righteous path. She shoots him to free him from his messed up life.
Actress Reema Lagoo's last rites were held in Mumbai's Oshiwara crematorium on Thursday afternoon. Ms Lagoo, who worked in film, TV and on stage, was taken to Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital early morning after complaining of chest pain. It was diagnosed as cardiac arrest and she died a little after 3 am. Reema Lagoo was 59. Her funeral was attended by several former colleagues, some of whom also posted messages for her on Twitter. Actor Aamir Khan visited Ms Lagoo's family at home with his wife Kiran Rao, and was later photographed at the funeral. "This is very tragic. We are still in shock. She had no major ailment that we knew about," Aamir, 51, told reporters about his co-star of films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Rangeela. Aamir's ex-wife Reena Dutta also attended the funeral.

Reema Lagoo died Thursday morning after a cardiac arrest at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai.
She played the typical Indian mom in films and popular TV shows and was frequently cast in films starring Salman Khan, including Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, and Maine Pyar Kiya. She also played Shah Rukh Khan’s mom in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Lagoo was quintessentially the middle- or upper-middle-class Indian woman of her time, a blend of the stereotypical Indian sanskar (culture) and the modern-age attitude that a bad situation can be changed with one’s own deeds. In Vastaav (1999), she was memorably powerful as a mother who kills her own son, played by Sanjay Dutt, after he is driven mad by the burdens of his criminal activities. She doesn’t her motherly love stop her from walking down the righteous path. She shoots him to free him from his messed up life.
Actress Reema Lagoo's last rites were held in Mumbai's Oshiwara crematorium on Thursday afternoon. Ms Lagoo, who worked in film, TV and on stage, was taken to Mumbai's Kokilaben Hospital early morning after complaining of chest pain. It was diagnosed as cardiac arrest and she died a little after 3 am. Reema Lagoo was 59. Her funeral was attended by several former colleagues, some of whom also posted messages for her on Twitter. Actor Aamir Khan visited Ms Lagoo's family at home with his wife Kiran Rao, and was later photographed at the funeral. "This is very tragic. We are still in shock. She had no major ailment that we knew about," Aamir, 51, told reporters about his co-star of films such as Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Rangeela. Aamir's ex-wife Reena Dutta also attended the funeral.

In the 1970s, her roles as mother to the characters played by Amitabh Bachchan made her name synonymous to the impoverished suffering mother. Her role in Deewar (1975) and its dialogues with reference to a mother and son are used as clichés. Throughout her career of over 60 years in movies, she has acted in over 250 movies. she did slow down considerably in the 1980s, but did make a comeback in 1999 with Lal Badshah.
Her end came quickly on October 13, 2004, at the age of 73, when she passed away after a cardiac arrest in Bombay.
She will always be remembered, not only as the 'mother of Bollywood' for her roles in movies like Gunsundari, Rani Rupmati, Deewar, Amar Akbar Anthony and many others.

Nirupa Roy was an Indian actress who appeared in Hindi films. Roy was mostly known for portraying character roles of the Indian mother. She played leading roles in her early films and started playing mother roles during the 1970s and 1980s. Her acting career spanned more than 50 years, and she acted in more than 275 films. She was referred to as the "queen of misery" in Hindi film circles.
