Man, Disney sure loves to make their own versions of some American tales like John Henry.
Has anyone noticed that John Henry uses the sketchy style of animation which is similar to the Jungle Book and Robin Hood? At least it's done a lot better than Legends of Chamberlain Heights.

This ballad tells the story of John Henry, an American folk hero. According to legend, he was the strongest and fastest railroad workers in his day during the post-Civil War era. In the late 1800's, the steam drill was invented to replace the men who pounded spikes into the hard rock so that sticks of dynamite could be placed in mountain faces to blast out a tunnel. In protest, John Henry vowed that before "I let a steam drill beat me down, I'm gonna die with a hammer in my hand." In the race of Man against Machine, John Henry won, but he "hammered so hard that he broke his heart."
Steel Drivin' Man
John's job was extremely difficult and dangerous. Imagine lifting a 10-pound sheep-nose hammer with a four foot long handle high above your head and slamming it down with all your might on a steel spike placed against a mountain side. He would stand about six feet from the spike and strike it with the full length of his hammer to drive it into into the solid rock. Each time he heaved the massive 10 pound mallet down, the "shaker" would turn the steel spike so each blow would send it deeper into the rock. The shaker would sing steady tunes to help John keep a rhythm with his striking hammer. Some say John Henry could drive the spikes into the ground for 10 hours without stopping.
Dynamite sticks were then placed in the holes to blast through the mountains to make rough tunnels for the railroad to go through. Many men died from falling rock, cave-ins, and suffocation working deep into the mountains. While the terrible conditions took many lives, John Henry endured them. He was one of the hardest working and strongest rail workers of the time.
By the late 1800's, the Industrial Era had arrived and the men who worked on the railroad were being replaced by more machines each year. When John Henry raced against the steam drill, his 6 foot, 200 pound body used every ounce of energy to prove he could not be outdone by a machine. Sadly, the amazing John Henry had expended all his energy and might. He died a "steel drivin' man."
History professor Scott Reynolds Nelson of the College of William and Mary in Virginia claims that John Henry of the ballad was based on an actual man named John William Henry. He was a freeman from the North who perhaps tried to find work after the Civil War. Somehow he ended up as a prisoner in the Virginia prison system to work as a steel driver. Danny Glover
Daniel Lebern "Danny" Glover (born July 22, 1946) is an American actor, film director, and political activist.
Glover is well known for his roles as Detective Sergeant Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon film series, Mr. Albert Johnson in The Color Purple, cowboy Mal Johnson in Silverado, Michael Harrigan in Predator 2, corrupt cop James McFee in Witness, Colonel Isaac Johnson in Shooter, Detective David Tapp in Saw, and George Knox in Angels in the Outfield. He has also appeared in many other movies, television shows, and theatrical productions. He is an active supporter of various humanitarian and political causes.
Early life
Glover was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Carrie (Hunley) and James Glover. His parents, postal workers, were active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), working to advance equal rights. Glover's mother, daughter of a midwife, was born in Louisville, Georgia and graduated from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.

Plot: A young boy draws on the inspiration of legendary western characters to find the strength to fight an evil land baron in the old west who wants to steal his family's farm and destroy their idyllic community. When Daniel Hackett sees his father Jonas gravely wounded by the villainous Stiles, his first urge is for his family to flee the danger, and give up their life on a farm which Daniel has come to despise anyway. Going alone to a lake to try to decide what to do, he falls asleep on a boat and wakes to find himself in the wild west, in the company of such "tall tale" legends as Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, John Henry and Calamity Jane. Together, they battle the same villains Daniel is facing in his "real" world, ending with a heroic confrontation in which the boy stands up to Stiles and his henchmen, and rallies his neighbors to fight back against land grabbers who want to destroy their town.

Plot: In a small Georgia town, twelve year old tomboy Frankie Addams feels unconnected to the world, a fact troubling to her. Her only real friend is John Henry, her younger next door neighbor, although she doesn't see him as a friend since she doesn't consider him a peer. As her widowed father is all consumed with running his small business, Frankie is largely left to the care of their housekeeper, Berenice. Berenice tries to provide as much true guidance to Frankie and what Frankie considers her problems, although Berenice has her own troubles looking after her wild foster brother, Honey Camden, her only surviving family. In addition, Frankie largely sees Berenice's advice as the rantings of a large, crazy black woman. Frankie believes that she has finally found her place in life upon the return to town and announcement by her older enlisted brother Jarvis that he is getting married to a woman named Janice. Immediately upon seeing Jarvis and Janice together, she falls in love with "them", believing she can be a "member" of "them" by leaving town with them immediately following the wedding. Frankie even wants to change her name to Jasmine to feel more connected to them as they will all then have a name "Ja__". Two negative situations following the wedding - one in reaction to her finding out that she can't go with Jarvis and Janice - may however put Frankie in the right direction to truly finding her place in life.

In the race of Man against Machine, John Henry won, but he "hammered so hard that he broke his heart."
Steel Drivin' Man
John's job was extremely difficult and dangerous. Imagine lifting a 10-pound sheep-nose hammer with a four foot long handle high above your head and slamming it down with all your might on a steel spike placed against a mountain side. He would stand about six feet from the spike and strike it with the full length of his hammer to drive it into into the solid rock. Each time he heaved the massive 10 pound mallet down, the "shaker" would turn the steel spike so each blow would send it deeper into the rock. The shaker would sing steady tunes to help John keep a rhythm with his striking hammer. Some say John Henry could drive the spikes into the ground for 10 hours without stopping.
Dynamite sticks were then placed in the holes to blast through the mountains to make rough tunnels for the railroad to go through. Many men died from falling rock, cave-ins, and suffocation working deep into the mountains. While the terrible conditions took many lives, John Henry endured them. He was one of the hardest working and strongest rail workers of the time.
By the late 1800's, the Industrial Era had arrived and the men who worked on the railroad were being replaced by more machines each year. When John Henry raced against the steam drill, his 6 foot, 200 pound body used every ounce of energy to prove he could not be outdone by a machine. Sadly, the amazing John Henry had expended all his energy and might. He died a "steel drivin' man."
History professor Scott Reynolds Nelson of the College of William and Mary in Virginia claims that John Henry of the ballad was based on an actual man named John William Henry. He was a freeman from the North who perhaps tried to find work after the Civil War. Somehow he ended up as a prisoner in the Virginia prison system to work as a steel driver. UPDATE: How on earth did this video get over 60,000 views and top all my other Legends of the Hidden Temple Crossovers? Man, Disney sure loves to make their own versions of some American tales like John Henry. Has anyone noticed that John Henry uses the sketchy style of animation which is similar to the Jungle Book and Robin Hood? At least it's done a lot better than Legends of Chamberlain Heights.

Each time he heaved the massive 10 pound mallet down, the "shaker" would turn the steel spike so each blow would send it deeper into the rock. The shaker would sing steady tunes to help John keep a rhythm with his striking hammer. Some say John Henry could drive the spikes into the ground for 10 hours without stopping.
Dynamite sticks were then placed in the holes to blast through the mountains to make rough tunnels for the railroad to go through. Many men died from falling rock, cave-ins, and suffocation working deep into the mountains. While the terrible conditions took many lives, John Henry endured them. He was one of the hardest working and strongest rail workers of the time.
By the late 1800's, the Industrial Era had arrived and the men who worked on the railroad were being replaced by more machines each year. When John Henry raced against the steam drill, his 6 foot, 200 pound body used every ounce of energy to prove he could not be outdone by a machine. Sadly, the amazing John Henry had expended all his energy and might. He died a "steel drivin' man."
History professor Scott Reynolds Nelson of the College of William and Mary in Virginia claims that John Henry of the ballad was based on an actual man named John William Henry. He was a freeman from the North who perhaps tried to find work after the Civil War. Somehow he ended up as a prisoner in the Virginia prison system to work as a steel driver. Originally an evangelical Oxford University academic and priest in the Church of England, Newman then became drawn to the high-church tradition of Anglicanism. He became known as a leader of, and an able polemicist for, the Oxford Movement, an influential and controversial grouping of Anglicans who wished to return to the Church of England many Catholic beliefs and liturgical rituals from before the English Reformation. In this the movement had some success. However, in 1845 Newman, joined by some but not all of his followers, left the Church of England and his teaching post at Oxford University and was received into the Catholic Church. He was quickly ordained as a priest and continued as an influential religious leader, based in Birmingham. In 1879, he was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in recognition of his services to the cause of the Catholic Church in England. He was instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland, which evolved into University College Dublin, today the largest university in Ireland.
Newman's beatification was officially proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010 during his visit to the United Kingdom. His canonisation is dependent on the documentation of additional miracles attributed to his intercession.
Newman was also a literary figure of note: his major writings including the Tracts for the Times (1833–1841), his autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1865–1866), the Grammar of Assent (1870), and the poem The Dream of Gerontius (1865), which was set to music in 1900 by Edward Elgar. He wrote the popular hymns "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Praise to the Holiest in the Height" (taken from Gerontius).
