1982) The mastermind of the Parliament/Funkadelic collective during the 1970s, George Clinton broke up both bands by 1981 and began recording solo albums, occasionally performing live with his former bandmates as the P.Funk All-Stars. Born in Kannapolis, NC, on July 22, 1940, Clinton became interested in doo wop while living in New Jersey during the early '50s. He formed the Parliaments in 1955, based out of a barbershop back room where he straightened hair. The group had a small R&B; hit during 1967, but Clinton began to mastermind the Parliaments' activities two years later. Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, the group revolutionized R&B; during the '70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-'60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the '70s, capturing over 40 R&B; hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums.
By 1980, George Clinton began to be weighed down by legal difficulties arising from Polygram's acquisition of Parliament's label, Casablanca. Jettisoning both the Parliament and Funkadelic names (but not the musicians), Clinton signed to Capitol in 1982 both as a solo act and as the P.Funk All-Stars. His first solo album, 1982's Computer Games, contained the Top 20 R&B; hit "Loopzilla." Several months later, the title track from Clinton's Atomic Dog EP hit number one on the R&B; charts; it stayed at the top spot for four weeks, but only managed number 101 on the pop charts. Clinton stayed on Capitol for three more years, releasing three studio albums and frequently charting singles -- "Nubian Nut," "Last Dance," "Do Fries Go With That Shake" -- in the R&B; Top 40. During much of the three-year period from 1986 to 1989, Clinton became embroiled in legal difficulties (resulting from the myriad royalty problems latent during the '70s with recordings of over 40 musicians for four labels under three names). Also problematic during the latter half of the '80s was Clinton's disintegrating reputation as a true forefather of rock; by the end of the decade, however, a generation of rappers reared on P-Funk were beginning to name check him.
In 1989, Clinton signed a contract with Prince's Paisley Park label and released his fifth solo studio album, The Cinderella Theory. After one more LP for Paisley Park (Hey Man, Smell My Finger), Clinton signed with Sony 550. His first release, 1996's T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. ("the awesome power of a fully operational mothership"), reunited the funk pioneer with several of his Parliament/Funkadelic comrades from the '70s. George Clinton (musician)
George Clinton (born July 22, 1941) is an American singer, songwriter, bandleader, and music producer. He was the principal architect of P-Funk, the mastermind of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic during the 1970s and early 1980s, and launched a solo career in 1981. He has been cited as one of the foremost innovators of funk music, along with James Brown and Sly Stone. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, alongside 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.
Career
Beginnings
Clinton was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey, and currently resides in Tallahassee, Florida. During his teen years Clinton formed a doo wop group inspired by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers called The Parliaments, while straightening hair at a barber salon in Plainfield.
1960s and 1970s
For a period in the 1960s Clinton was a staff songwriter for Motown. Despite initial commercial failure and one major hit single, ("(I Wanna) Testify" in 1967), as well as arranging and producing scores of singles on many of the independent Detroit soul music labels, The Parliaments eventually found success under the names Parliament and Funkadelic in the 1970s (see also P-Funk). These two bands combined the elements of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Cream, and James Brown while exploring various sounds, technology, and lyricism. Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic dominated diverse music during the 1970s with over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and three platinum albums.

Plot: High School students Salvadore and Carmine Dementia, while working on a science project, inadvertently create an inexpensive computer operating system and Internet browser that doesn't crash! The Dementias strike it rich when the boys' project appears on the Evening News, and it convinces a Hong Kong-based company to flood the market with an inexpensive black-market version of Microsoft Windows called Chindows. The entire Dementia Family, thanks to young Carmine and Salvadore, have now become dot-com millionaires. With the rest of the dysfunctional Dementia family sporting only grade-school educations at best, the Dementias begin to flaunt their new-found wealth. As they begin to convert their modest Long Island home into a white statue-laden mansion, the first order of business is to construct a haunted house for Halloween to impress their working-class neighbors, who are portrayed by movie stars and comedians in cameo roles. As practical joking has been ingrained in the Dementia family persona for generations, one never knows what lighthearted prank the Dementias will pull next. So trick-or-treating at the Dementias each year makes one wonder what is a gag and what is real. With Chindows flooding the market, things begin to go awry. As the viewer tries to discover whether it is the other competing software companies, the Long Island mafia, or just scheming Uncle Ralph Dementia...someone is continually trying to kill Salvatore's dad, Salvadore Sr., the now-wealthy patriarch of the family. Several months later, the title track from Clinton's Atomic Dog EP hit number one on the R&B; charts; it stayed at the top spot for four weeks, but only managed number 101 on the pop charts. Clinton stayed on Capitol for three more years, releasing three studio albums and frequently charting singles -- "Nubian Nut," "Last Dance," "Do Fries Go With That Shake" -- in the R&B; Top 40. During much of the three-year period from 1986 to 1989, Clinton became embroiled in legal difficulties (resulting from the myriad royalty problems latent during the '70s with recordings of over 40 musicians for four labels under three names). Also problematic during the latter half of the '80s was Clinton's disintegrating reputation as a true forefather of rock; by the end of the decade, however, a generation of rappers reared on P-Funk were beginning to name check him.
In 1989, Clinton signed a contract with Prince's Paisley Park label and released his fifth solo studio album, The Cinderella Theory. Osmium is the debut album of American funk band Parliament, led by George Clinton. The album has a psychedelic soul sound with a spirit of experimentation that is more similar to early Funkadelic than the later R&B-inspired; Parliament albums. It was originally released in July 1970 on Invictus Records.[5] The original vinyl release contained a glossy lyric sheet. Since its re-release in 1990, Osmium has been distributed numerous times by various labels in the U.S., Europe and Japan, sometimes under alternate titles that have included Rhenium and First Thangs. After George Clinton disbanded Parliament and Funkadelic at the dawn of the '80s, he embarked on a solo career, but also maintained contact with many of his band alumni in a short-term (at least initially) project dubbed the P-Funk All Stars. Having sorted out various legal and financial difficulties from the initial breakup, Clinton reconvened many of the best musicians from throughout Parliament/Funkadelic history in 1982, including Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel, Garry Shider, Dewayne Blackbird McKnight, Walter "Junie" Morrison, David Spradley, and many others -- not to mention a guest appearance by Sly Stone. They recorded a fine album, 1983's Urban Dancefloor Guerillas, that featured a different lineup on every track; it reached the R&B; Top 50 and spawned a chart single in "Generator Pop."
The accompanying tour featured many of the same musicians in what was one of the last P-Funk spectacles for quite some time. One of the shows from the tour was released on CD in 1990 by Westbound as Live at the Beverly Theatre in Hollywood; Westbound also issued an alternate version of Urban Dancefloor Guerillas under the title Hydraulic Funk, which restored several tracks to their full, unedited length.
Circa 1989, Clinton revived the P-Funk All Stars name for the group with which he would spend much of the '90s touring.
Among these musicians were guitarist/bandleader Dewayne Blackbird McKnight, guitarists Gary Shider and Michael Hampton, bassists Lige Curry and Billy "Bass" Nelson, multi-instrumentalist Rodney "Skeet" Curtis, drummer Frankie Kash Waddy, and many others in what became a loose, revolving-door arrangement. With Clinton's musical legacy dominating the hip-hop scene, the group was much in demand during the early '90s, and even played the main stage of the 1994 Lollapalooza tour. Inspired by a P-Funk lyric, she created the "Afronaut",a cartoon character from outer space who serves as the film`s host and narrator. The Afronaut`s voice is provided by hip-hop comic and actor Eddie Griffin, who co-starred in the popular series Malcolm and Eddie and feature films including Undercover Brother, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo
and its sequel Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo. In PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC, the Afronaut descends to earth from a new millennium version of the Mothership, created by computer graphics artist Paul Collins. The Afronaut was brought to life in cell animation from the drawings of Kevin Lofton, a former animation artist on Beavis and Butthead.
In PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC, interviews with the original Parliaments the late Ray Davis, Calvin Simon, Grady Thomas and Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins take place in a virtual barber shop, reminiscent of the group`s early years doing hair and singing in a New Jersey hair salon run by George Clinton. The barbershop and the various environments in which George Clinton appears, were created in digital animation. In addition to the Parliaments, the film also features original interviews with George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Dawn Silva, one of the Brides of Funkenstein and other key P-Funk band members and staff. Other musicians interviewed include Rick James, Ice Cube, Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, De La Soul, Shock G (also known as "Humpty Hump" of the Digital Underground) and Nona Hendryx of LaBelle. Reginald Hudlin, director of House Party and Boomerang, president of entertainment for BET and a P-Funk fanatic, also appears, as does funk historian and author Rickey Vincent.

The Afronaut was brought to life in cell animation from the drawings of Kevin Lofton, a former animation artist on Beavis and Butthead.
In PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC, interviews with the original Parliaments the late Ray Davis, Calvin Simon, Grady Thomas and Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins take place in a virtual barber shop, reminiscent of the group`s early years doing hair and singing in a New Jersey hair salon run by George Clinton. The barbershop and the various environments in which George Clinton appears, were created in digital animation. In addition to the Parliaments, the film also features original interviews with George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, Garry Shider, Dawn Silva, one of the Brides of Funkenstein and other key P-Funk band members and staff. Other musicians interviewed include Rick James, Ice Cube, Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, De La Soul, Shock G (also known as "Humpty Hump" of the Digital Underground) and Nona Hendryx of LaBelle. Reginald Hudlin, director of House Party and Boomerang, president of entertainment for BET and a P-Funk fanatic, also appears, as does funk historian and author Rickey Vincent.

Nelson George served as host of Soul Cities, a travel show that debuted in November 2008. on VH1 Soul. He currently serves as travel editor-at-large for www.BlackAtlas.com.

Daniel Dencik: Born in 1972 in Stockholm, Daniel Dencik is a Danish writer and film director. He graduated from film school in film editing, but debuted as a poet while he went to film school. Daniel Dencik has received a number of awards and scholarships in both film and literature, among other things, Night & Day Copenhagen Prize for the year's best literature, Danish Arts Foundation's three-year grant, festival award at the Jerusalem Film Festival.
Dencik made his debut as a documentary filmmaker with Moon Rider on bike rider Rasmus Quaade. He was voted Talent of the Year in documentary genre in Denmark in 2012 and received Reel Talent Award at CPH: DOX.
THE WINDING STREAM: The Winding Stream is a 90-minute High Definition music history documentary-in-progress that tells the story of the American roots music dynasty, the Carters and the Cashes. Starting with the Original Carter Family (A.P., Sara, Maybelle), the film traces the ebb and flow of their influence, the transformation of that act into the Carter Sisters, the marital alliance with legend Johnny Cash and the efforts of present-day family to keep this legacy alive. No one has yet pulled together all the elements of this family saga in one documentary. The goal of The Winding Stream is to honor this multi-generational family where it stands -- at the headwaters of American roots music.
Beth Harrington is an award-winning independent producer, director and writer, born in Boston and transplanted to the Pacific Northwest. She has been making media professionally since 1977. She most often focuses on work that explores American history, music and culture.
Harrington's independent production Welcome to the Club -- The Women of Rockabilly, a music documentary about the pioneering women of rock and roll, was released in 2003. In a previous lifetime, she was a rock & roll singer, most noted for her years as a member of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers on the Warner Brothers Sire Records label

Osmium is the debut album of American funk band Parliament, led by George Clinton. The album has a psychedelic soul sound with a spirit of experimentation that is more similar to early Funkadelic than the later R&B-inspired; Parliament albums. It was originally released in July 1970 on Invictus Records.[5] The original vinyl release contained a glossy lyric sheet.
Since its re-release in 1990, Osmium has been distributed numerous times by various labels in the U.S., Europe and Japan, sometimes under alternate titles that have included Rhenium and First Thangs. A number of these reissues have featured material that was not included on the original album, such as unreleased tracks and singles that were recorded around the same time as Osmium.
The personnel for this album included the five Parliaments singers and the five backing musicians known as Funkadelic. The same personnel also recorded as Funkadelic, releasing that act's self-titled debut album also in 1970. After the release of Osmium, contractual difficulties prevented further recording under the name Parliament until 1974, when Clinton signed that act to Casablanca Records and positioned it as an R&B-inspired; counterpoint to the more rock-oriented Funkadelic.
The yodeling that arguably uniquely identifies one of De La Soul's early hits, "Potholes in My Lawn" (which eventually appeared on De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising), comes from Osmium's "Little Ole Country Boy".[6] (wikipedia)

The 42-year-old rapper Killer Mike, of Run The Jewels, and the 75-year-old funk legend George Clinton, founder of Parliament and Funkadelic, may be from different generations, but it turns out they have a few things in common: They've both created music that seemed commercially risky at first, yet ended up transcending genres and creating a new audience. And they both embrace music as a force for social change.
It also turns out they've both owned barbershops — and that's no coincidence. Both men say the businesses allowed them the financial freedom to take creative risks.
So we brought the two of them together at Killer Mike's SWAG Shop — the Shave Wash And Groom Shop — in Atlanta. They settled in for a wide-ranging conversation that covers everything from barbershop philosophy to the birth of Funkadelic to Clinton's work with Outkast and other members of the Atlanta hip-hop scene.

His first solo album, 1982's Computer Games, contained the Top 20 R&B; hit "Loopzilla." Several months later, the title track from Clinton's Atomic Dog EP hit number one on the R&B; charts; it stayed at the top spot for four weeks, but only managed number 101 on the pop charts. Clinton stayed on Capitol for three more years, releasing three studio albums and frequently charting singles -- "Nubian Nut," "Last Dance," "Do Fries Go With That Shake" -- in the R&B; Top 40. During much of the three-year period from 1986 to 1989, Clinton became embroiled in legal difficulties (resulting from the myriad royalty problems latent during the '70s with recordings of over 40 musicians for four labels under three names). Also problematic during the latter half of the '80s was Clinton's disintegrating reputation as a true forefather of rock; by the end of the decade, however, a generation of rappers reared on P-Funk were beginning to name check him.
In 1989, Clinton signed a contract with Prince's Paisley Park label and released his fifth solo studio album, The Cinderella Theory. After one more LP for Paisley Park (Hey Man, Smell My Finger), Clinton signed with Sony 550. His first release, 1996's T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M.
