FRED WILLIAMSON - INTERVIEW
When Fred Williamson went to Hollywood he was in no doubt about what he wanted. With the civil rights movement in full swing and no black heroes on the big screen he decided to fill that void.
Having made his name in pro-football as "The Hammer" and after a successful career as an architect, Williamson used the heft of his fame to talk his way into a job on the breakthrough sitcom Julia with Diahann Carroll, the first to feature a black woman. He insisted to its producer that having her with a new boyfriend every week sent a bad message and that he should be cast as her regular beau. It worked.
That lead to a chance meeting in the studio canteen with director Robert Altman who invited him to direct the now-famous football scene in MASH (1970) which landed Williamson the role as Captain "Spearchucker" Jones.
From there, Williamson began initiating movie projects, casting himself as the alpha-male hero who always wins and who must never die. He held a press conference announcing his availability, provided his character was triumphant.
A brush with Universal taught Williamson to steer clear of studios. A lead role in the successful Bond-like action film That Man Bolt (1973) was meant to lead to other films, but the studio decided to pay him out rather than be the first to make black action stars a regular feature of 1970s American cinema. So Williamson went out on his own.
When Shaft (1971) with Richard Roundtree became a huge hit Universal called back, but Williamson was not interested. He decided that being an independent filmmaker was the best way to go.
He went on to make several iconic films of the "blaxploitation" era - a term he dislikes - including the classics Black Caesar (1973), Hammer (1972) and Three the Hard Way (1974).
Developing his fanbase in Asia and Europe, where he remains huge, Williamson survived the blaxploitation years to continue making low-budget action films where his prowess with martial arts and automatic weapons saved the day. Using his hard-won marketing savvy and the value of pre-sales, Williamson keeps costs low to ensure his films always make money.
Now 77, Williamson is proud of his formidable body of work, yet is strangely coy about the influence he had over the audiences of the 1970s and with present-day action stars such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy.
Despite having a healthy ego, he is both cautious about claiming too much credit and cynical about those he believes owe him acknowledgement.
We had a terrific interview with Williamson spanning his career, achievements and opinions. Ever-quotable and controversial, he is not somebody used to holding back and remains in tireless good humour.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A man who fights his way to success learns the people who helped him may be his biggest enemies in this action drama. B.J. Hammer (Fred Williamson) is a dock worker who used to box in the Golden Gloves and still knows how to handle himself in a fight; when he gets into a brawl at work, he's seen in action by an associate of Davis (Bernie Hamilton), a flashy businessman who manages boxers. Davis thinks Hammer has potential, and offers him a contract. Soon Hammer is training with Professor (Mel Stewart, an experienced boxing coach, and begins romancing Lois (Vonetta McGee), one of Davis's secretaries. After easily winning several fights, Hammer's career is on the rise and he seems poised to become a championship contender. But Davis isn't just interested in boxing; he's an underworld kingpin who also traffics in drugs and prostitutes, and often uses washed-up fighters as pawns in his criminal games. Hammer soon learns just how Davis operates when his manager orders him to take a dive in an upcoming fight, and when Hammer refuses, both he and Lois could face deadly retribution. Also starring William Smith and D'Urville Martin, Hammer was a major box-office success that established Fred Williamson as one of the major stars of the 1970s blaxploitation boom; the film also included an original score from soul music legend Solomon Burke.

Fred Williamson
Frederick Robert Williamson, nicknamed "The Hammer" (born March 5, 1938) is an American actor and former professional American football defensive back who played mainly in the American Football League during the 1960s. He has black belts in Kenpo, Shotokan Karate, and Tae-Kwon-Do. Since 1997 Williamson has had a home in Palm Springs, California.
Football career
After playing college football for Northwestern in the late 1950s, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers. When during training camp he was switched to their defense, his attitude over the switch prompted him to play his position with too much aggression, and the coach of the 49ers asked him to quit "hammering" his players. Thus, "The Hammer" quickly stuck and became his nickname.
Williamson played one year for the Steelers in the National Football League in 1960. Next, he moved to the new American Football League. Williamson played four seasons for the AFL's Oakland Raiders, making the AFL All-Star team in 1961, 1962, and 1963. He also played three seasons for the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs.

Brenda Venus is an American actress, model, author, ballerina and filmmaker.
Literary career
Venus is the author of "Secrets of Seduction for Men" and "Secrets of Seduction for Women" and a 2012 novella titled "Twelve Hours". Her books have been translated into 37 languages. Publishers William Morrow and E.F. Dutton sent her on a worldwide publicity tour - making various appearances on TV, radio and press interviews. For over six years, starting in 1998, Brenda wrote a popular column for Playboy Magazine called "Centerfolds on Sex."
Relationship with Henry Miller
After purchasing a book when she was a college student at an auction that contained an envelope with famed writer Henry Miller's address, Venus wrote to Miller and they became "pen pals". Eventually Miller became her mentor and Brenda his muse,. Miller wrote 1,500 letters that were collected into the book "Dear, Dear Brenda – The Love Letters of Henry Miller to Brenda Venus".
In his book Joey, Miller wrote of Venus: "To love at the end of one's life is something special. Few women can inspire that sort of love. To wake up with the words of love on one's lips--what bliss! Just to say "Brenda" puts me in ecstasy."

FRED WILLIAMSON - INTERVIEW
When Fred Williamson went to Hollywood he was in no doubt about what he wanted. With the civil rights movement in full swing and no black heroes on the big screen he decided to fill that void.
Having made his name in pro-football as "The Hammer" and after a successful career as an architect, Williamson used the heft of his fame to talk his way into a job on the breakthrough sitcom Julia with Diahann Carroll, the first to feature a black woman. He insisted to its producer that having her with a new boyfriend every week sent a bad message and that he should be cast as her regular beau. It worked.
That lead to a chance meeting in the studio canteen with director Robert Altman who invited him to direct the now-famous football scene in MASH (1970) which landed Williamson the role as Captain "Spearchucker" Jones.
From there, Williamson began initiating movie projects, casting himself as the alpha-male hero who always wins and who must never die. He held a press conference announcing his availability, provided his character was triumphant.
A brush with Universal taught Williamson to steer clear of studios. A lead role in the successful Bond-like action film That Man Bolt (1973) was meant to lead to other films, but the studio decided to pay him out rather than be the first to make black action stars a regular feature of 1970s American cinema. So Williamson went out on his own.
When Shaft (1971) with Richard Roundtree became a huge hit Universal called back, but Williamson was not interested. He decided that being an independent filmmaker was the best way to go.
He went on to make several iconic films of the "blaxploitation" era - a term he dislikes - including the classics Black Caesar (1973), Hammer (1972) and Three the Hard Way (1974).
Developing his fanbase in Asia and Europe, where he remains huge, Williamson survived the blaxploitation years to continue making low-budget action films where his prowess with martial arts and automatic weapons saved the day. Using his hard-won marketing savvy and the value of pre-sales, Williamson keeps costs low to ensure his films always make money.
Now 77, Williamson is proud of his formidable body of work, yet is strangely coy about the influence he had over the audiences of the 1970s and with present-day action stars such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy.
Despite having a healthy ego, he is both cautious about claiming too much credit and cynical about those he believes owe him acknowledgement.
We had a terrific interview with Williamson spanning his career, achievements and opinions. Ever-quotable and controversial, he is not somebody used to holding back and remains in tireless good humour.

FRED WILLIAMSON - INTERVIEW
When Fred Williamson went to Hollywood he was in no doubt about what he wanted. With the civil rights movement in full swing and no black heroes on the big screen he decided to fill that void.
Having made his name in pro-football as "The Hammer" and after a successful career as an architect, Williamson used the heft of his fame to talk his way into a job on the breakthrough sitcom Julia with Diahann Carroll, the first to feature a black woman. He insisted to its producer that having her with a new boyfriend every week sent a bad message and that he should be cast as her regular beau. It worked.
That lead to a chance meeting in the studio canteen with director Robert Altman who invited him to direct the now-famous football scene in MASH (1970) which landed Williamson the role as Captain "Spearchucker" Jones.
From there, Williamson began initiating movie projects, casting himself as the alpha-male hero who always wins and who must never die. He held a press conference announcing his availability, provided his character was triumphant.
A brush with Universal taught Williamson to steer clear of studios. A lead role in the successful Bond-like action film That Man Bolt (1973) was meant to lead to other films, but the studio decided to pay him out rather than be the first to make black action stars a regular feature of 1970s American cinema. So Williamson went out on his own.
When Shaft (1971) with Richard Roundtree became a huge hit Universal called back, but Williamson was not interested. He decided that being an independent filmmaker was the best way to go.
He went on to make several iconic films of the "blaxploitation" era - a term he dislikes - including the classics Black Caesar (1973), Hammer (1972) and Three the Hard Way (1974).
Developing his fanbase in Asia and Europe, where he remains huge, Williamson survived the blaxploitation years to continue making low-budget action films where his prowess with martial arts and automatic weapons saved the day. Using his hard-won marketing savvy and the value of pre-sales, Williamson keeps costs low to ensure his films always make money.
Now 77, Williamson is proud of his formidable body of work, yet is strangely coy about the influence he had over the audiences of the 1970s and with present-day action stars such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy.
Despite having a healthy ego, he is both cautious about claiming too much credit and cynical about those he believes owe him acknowledgement.
We had a terrific interview with Williamson spanning his career, achievements and opinions. Ever-quotable and controversial, he is not somebody used to holding back and remains in tireless good humour.

FRED WILLIAMSON - INTERVIEW
When Fred Williamson went to Hollywood he was in no doubt about what he wanted. With the civil rights movement in full swing and no black heroes on the big screen he decided to fill that void.
Having made his name in pro-football as "The Hammer" and after a successful career as an architect, Williamson used the heft of his fame to talk his way into a job on the breakthrough sitcom Julia with Diahann Carroll, the first to feature a black woman. He insisted to its producer that having her with a new boyfriend every week sent a bad message and that he should be cast as her regular beau. It worked.
That lead to a chance meeting in the studio canteen with director Robert Altman who invited him to direct the now-famous football scene in MASH (1970) which landed Williamson the role as Captain "Spearchucker" Jones.
From there, Williamson began initiating movie projects, casting himself as the alpha-male hero who always wins and who must never die. He held a press conference announcing his availability, provided his character was triumphant.
A brush with Universal taught Williamson to steer clear of studios. A lead role in the successful Bond-like action film That Man Bolt (1973) was meant to lead to other films, but the studio decided to pay him out rather than be the first to make black action stars a regular feature of 1970s American cinema. So Williamson went out on his own.
When Shaft (1971) with Richard Roundtree became a huge hit Universal called back, but Williamson was not interested. He decided that being an independent filmmaker was the best way to go.
He went on to make several iconic films of the "blaxploitation" era - a term he dislikes - including the classics Black Caesar (1973), Hammer (1972) and Three the Hard Way (1974).
Developing his fanbase in Asia and Europe, where he remains huge, Williamson survived the blaxploitation years to continue making low-budget action films where his prowess with martial arts and automatic weapons saved the day. Using his hard-won marketing savvy and the value of pre-sales, Williamson keeps costs low to ensure his films always make money.
Now 77, Williamson is proud of his formidable body of work, yet is strangely coy about the influence he had over the audiences of the 1970s and with present-day action stars such as Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy.
Despite having a healthy ego, he is both cautious about claiming too much credit and cynical about those he believes owe him acknowledgement.
We had a terrific interview with Williamson spanning his career, achievements and opinions. Ever-quotable and controversial, he is not somebody used to holding back and remains in tireless good humour.
