Bull was born in Bergen, Norway. He was the eldest of ten children of Johan Storm Bull (1787–1838) and Anna Dorothea Borse Geelmuyden (1789–1875). His brother, Georg Andreas Bull became a noted Norwegian architect. He was also the uncle of Edvard Hagerup Bull, Norwegian judge and politician.
His father wished for him to become a minister, but he desired a musical career. At the age of four or five, he could play all of the songs he had heard his mother play on the violin. At age nine, he played first violin in the orchestra of Bergen's theatre and was a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. At eighteen, he was sent to the University of Christiania, but failed his examinations. He joined the Musical Lyceum, a musical society, and after its director Waldemar Thrane took ill, Bull became the director of Musical Lyceum and the Theater Orchestra in 1828. He also became friends with Henrik Wergeland, who later wrote a biography of Bull.
After living for a while in Germany, where he pretended to study law, he went to Paris but fared badly for a year or two. In 1832 in Paris he shared rooms with the Moravian violin virtuoso Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. He was eventually successful in becoming a high-level virtuoso, giving thousands of concerts. In England alone these included 274 in 1837, during which visit he also travelled to some of the more remote parts of Britain. Bull became very famous and made a huge fortune. He is believed to have composed more than 70 works, but only about 10 are known today. Best known is Sæterjentens søndag (The dairymaid's Sunday). He also was a clever luthier, after studies in Paris with Vuillaume. He collected many beautiful violins and violas of Amati, Gasparo da Salò, Guarneri, Stradivari and others. He was the owner of one of the finest violins of the world, made by Gasparo da Salò about 1574 for Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. He played a Guarneri del Gesù. The violin, a gift of his widow to Bull's birthplace, is now in the Bergen Vestlandske Kustindustrimuseum. A commercial signature line of Ole Bull violins was manufactured in Germany.
Bull was caught up in a rising tide of Norwegian romantic nationalism, and acclaimed the idea of Norway as a sovereign state, separate from Sweden—which became a reality in 1905. In 1850, he co-founded the first theater in which actors spoke Norwegian rather than Danish, namely Det Norske Theater in Bergen—which later became Den Nationale Scene.
Robert Schumann once wrote that Bull was among "the greatest of all," and that he was on a level with Niccolò Paganini for the speed and clarity of his playing. Bull was also a friend of Franz Liszt and played with him on several occasions.
Ole Bull bought the island of Lysøen in Os, south of Bergen, in 1872. He hired architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe (1833-1901) to design a residence on the island. Bull died from cancer in his home on Lysøen on 17 August 1880. He had held his last concert in Chicago the same year, despite his illness. A testament to his fame was his funeral procession, perhaps the most spectacular in Norway's history. The ship transporting his body was guided by 15 steamers and a large number of smaller vessels.

The history of violin can be divided into three categories: those before Paganini, those during and concurrent and those who came after. Ole Bull was a Norwegian contemporary of Paganini, other violinists included (if I am not mistaken) Rode, Kreutzer, Joachim, Ernst, Beroit, Lafont and Lipinski. (When I have more time I will probably list more and may exclude some of the above, to be continued)...

It is my hope that a whole generation of new violinists will follow her example by recording, performing, and preserving neglected music of the romantic masters. I dream of a series of box set recordings, live performances, and DVDs of the music of Beroit, Rode, Sauret, etc - recorded by Ehnes, Kaler, Kavakos, Mintz, Repin, etc and also recitals filled with this kind of music. If that ever happened I would truly be in fiddle nirvana!
In addition to that, I think of what a recital was really like back then, for example imagine Paganini playing a Viotti concerto but using his own cadenza or better yet, improvising a solo using a cadenza as a guideline. Then after that go on to play his own music. Perhaps Kreisler was the last violinist to do that? But what if a whole new generation of players started doing that again? It doesn't hurt to encourage people and make suggestions does it? Am I asking too many questions?

The violin of Ole Bull is quite special. NRK Hordaland made a film around the Norwegian violinist and composer Ole Bull (originally from Bergen, 1810 - 1880). Amnon Weinstein, winner of the Ole Bull prize 2007, was interviewed in his workshop to explain why there is a special sound in the violin.

Bull was born in Bergen, Norway. He was the eldest of ten children of Johan Storm Bull (1787–1838) and Anna Dorothea Borse Geelmuyden (1789–1875). His brother, Georg Andreas Bull became a noted Norwegian architect. He was also the uncle of Edvard Hagerup Bull, Norwegian judge and politician.
His father wished for him to become a minister, but he desired a musical career. At the age of four or five, he could play all of the songs he had heard his mother play on the violin. At age nine, he played first violin in the orchestra of Bergen's theatre and was a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. At eighteen, he was sent to the University of Christiania, but failed his examinations. He joined the Musical Lyceum, a musical society, and after its director Waldemar Thrane took ill, Bull became the director of Musical Lyceum and the Theater Orchestra in 1828. He also became friends with Henrik Wergeland, who later wrote a biography of Bull.
After living for a while in Germany, where he pretended to study law, he went to Paris but fared badly for a year or two. In 1832 in Paris he shared rooms with the Moravian violin virtuoso Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. He was eventually successful in becoming a high-level virtuoso, giving thousands of concerts. In England alone these included 274 in 1837, during which visit he also travelled to some of the more remote parts of Britain. Bull became very famous and made a huge fortune. He is believed to have composed more than 70 works, but only about 10 are known today. Best known is Sæterjentens søndag (The dairymaid's Sunday). He also was a clever luthier, after studies in Paris with Vuillaume. He collected many beautiful violins and violas of Amati, Gasparo da Salò, Guarneri, Stradivari and others. He was the owner of one of the finest violins of the world, made by Gasparo da Salò about 1574 for Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria. He played a Guarneri del Gesù. The violin, a gift of his widow to Bull's birthplace, is now in the Bergen Vestlandske Kustindustrimuseum. A commercial signature line of Ole Bull violins was manufactured in Germany.
Bull was caught up in a rising tide of Norwegian romantic nationalism, and acclaimed the idea of Norway as a sovereign state, separate from Sweden—which became a reality in 1905. In 1850, he co-founded the first theater in which actors spoke Norwegian rather than Danish, namely Det Norske Theater in Bergen—which later became Den Nationale Scene.
Robert Schumann once wrote that Bull was among "the greatest of all," and that he was on a level with Niccolò Paganini for the speed and clarity of his playing. Bull was also a friend of Franz Liszt and played with him on several occasions.
Ole Bull bought the island of Lysøen in Os, south of Bergen, in 1872. He hired architect Conrad Fredrik von der Lippe (1833-1901) to design a residence on the island. Bull died from cancer in his home on Lysøen on 17 August 1880. He had held his last concert in Chicago the same year, despite his illness. A testament to his fame was his funeral procession, perhaps the most spectacular in Norway's history. The ship transporting his body was guided by 15 steamers and a large number of smaller vessels.

The history of violin can be divided into three categories: those before Paganini, those during and concurrent and those who came after. Ole Bull was a Norwegian contemporary of Paganini, other violinists included (if I am not mistaken) Rode, Kreutzer, Joachim, Ernst, Beroit, Lafont and Lipinski. (When I have more time I will probably list more and may exclude some of the above, to be continued)...

It is my hope that a whole generation of new violinists will follow her example by recording, performing, and preserving neglected music of the romantic masters. I dream of a series of box set recordings, live performances, and DVDs of the music of Beroit, Rode, Sauret, etc - recorded by Ehnes, Kaler, Kavakos, Mintz, Repin, etc and also recitals filled with this kind of music. If that ever happened I would truly be in fiddle nirvana!
In addition to that, I think of what a recital was really like back then, for example imagine Paganini playing a Viotti concerto but using his own cadenza or better yet, improvising a solo using a cadenza as a guideline. Then after that go on to play his own music. Perhaps Kreisler was the last violinist to do that? But what if a whole new generation of players started doing that again? It doesn't hurt to encourage people and make suggestions does it? Am I asking too many questions?

Charlie is a respected player with a prolific touring history who has appeared with orchestras around the world. His festival appearances include St Moritz, Gstaad, Spoleto and Windsor and orchestras include the Royal Philharmonic, London Mozart Players, Israel Camerata and the Bergen Philharmonic. Henning Kraggerud Plays Ole Bull at The Longfellow Choral Festival
"When I drove home, I saw twelve moons instead of one," wrote Frances Appleton Longfellow—the wife of the poet—on May 15, 1844, after hearing Ole Bull (1810–1880), the Norwegian violin virtuoso, for the first time. It was the height of the Transcendentalism fad in Boston. (Margaret Fuller was also swept away.) This video contains audio excepts from Henning Kraggerud's recital on March 5, 2012, in South Portland, Maine, USA, during the 2012 Longfellow Choral Festival. We invited Henning to Portland to perform music related to Ole Bull's multi-year friendship with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, highlighting Bull's connection to Maine through the home in Lebanon, Maine, and Bull's huge (you might call it single-handed) influence on the establishment of Norwegian cultural identity. Charlie is a respected player with a prolific touring history who has appeared with orchestras around the world. His festival appearances include St Moritz, Gstaad, Spoleto and Windsor and orchestras include the Royal Philharmonic, London Mozart Players, Israel Camerata and the Bergen Philharmonic. In 2008 Charlie toured the UK with the Moscow Philharmonic playing Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto to great critical acclaim. Charlie's debut CD was released in 2008 and featured violin sonatas by Grieg and Elgar. The recording was widely lauded and received airplay on both Classic FM and BBC Radio 3.

It was the height of the Transcendentalism fad in Boston. (Margaret Fuller was also swept away.) This video contains audio excepts from Henning Kraggerud's recital on March 5, 2012, in South Portland, Maine, USA, during the 2012 Longfellow Choral Festival. The history of violin can be divided into three categories: those before Paganini, those during and concurrent and those who came after. Ole Bull was a Norwegian contemporary of Paganini, other violinists included (if I am not mistaken) Rode, Kreutzer, Joachim, Ernst, Beroit, Lafont and Lipinski. (When I have more time I will probably list more and may exclude some of the above, to be continued)...

It is my hope that a whole generation of new violinists will follow her example by recording, performing, and preserving neglected music of the romantic masters. I dream of a series of box set recordings, live performances, and DVDs of the music of Beroit, Rode, Sauret, etc - recorded by Ehnes, Kaler, Kavakos, Mintz, Repin, etc and also recitals filled with this kind of music. If that ever happened I would truly be in fiddle nirvana!
In addition to that, I think of what a recital was really like back then, for example imagine Paganini playing a Viotti concerto but using his own cadenza or better yet, improvising a solo using a cadenza as a guideline. Then after that go on to play his own music. Perhaps Kreisler was the last violinist to do that? But what if a whole new generation of players started doing that again? It doesn't hurt to encourage people and make suggestions does it? Am I asking too many questions?

On March 4, 2012, as part of The Longfellow Choral Festival, the film Ole Bull's Fairy Tale, a 1982 Norwegian Television children's TV series about Ole Bull, was shown in a theater in Portland, Maine. Arve Tellefsen, who, in 1982, narrated and played in the film, gave a short, informal talk before this showing, in which he recalled the making of the film and related anecdotes about the life of Ole Bull (1810--1880). "When I drove home, I saw twelve moons instead of one," wrote Frances Appleton Longfellow—the wife of the poet—on May 15, 1844, after hearing Ole Bull (1810–1880), the Norwegian violin virtuoso, for the first time. It was the height of the Transcendentalism fad in Boston. (Margaret Fuller was also swept away.) This video contains audio excepts from Henning Kraggerud's recital on March 5, 2012, in South Portland, Maine, USA, during the 2012 Longfellow Choral Festival. It is my hope that a whole generation of new violinists will follow her example by recording, performing, and preserving neglected music of the romantic masters. I dream of a series of box set recordings, live performances, and DVDs of the music of Beroit, Rode, Sauret, etc - recorded by Ehnes, Kaler, Kavakos, Mintz, Repin, etc and also recitals filled with this kind of music. If that ever happened I would truly be in fiddle nirvana!
In addition to that, I think of what a recital was really like back then, for example imagine Paganini playing a Viotti concerto but using his own cadenza or better yet, improvising a solo using a cadenza as a guideline. Then after that go on to play his own music. Perhaps Kreisler was the last violinist to do that? But what if a whole new generation of players started doing that again? It doesn't hurt to encourage people and make suggestions does it? Am I asking too many questions?

"When I drove home, I saw twelve moons instead of one," wrote Frances Appleton Longfellow—the wife of the poet—on May 15, 1844, after hearing Ole Bull (1810–1880), the Norwegian violin virtuoso, for the first time. It was the height of the Transcendentalism fad in Boston. (Margaret Fuller was also swept away.) This video contains audio excepts from Henning Kraggerud's recital on March 5, 2012, in South Portland, Maine, USA, during the 2012 Longfellow Choral Festival. We invited Henning to Portland to perform music related to Ole Bull's multi-year friendship with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, highlighting Bull's connection to Maine through the home in Lebanon, Maine, and Bull's huge (you might call it single-handed) influence on the establishment of Norwegian cultural identity. As Henning says in the video, "Without Bull there would have been no Edvard Grieg." To that one might add, no Ibsen, no Bjørnson. That Bull wrote what was apparently his own funeral march and gave the music as a gift to Longfellow on the poet's 73rd birthday, February 27, 1880 (shortly before Bull died) was something I stumbled upon while researching this topic at what was then called the Longfellow National Historic Site in Cambridge, MA (today -- Longfellow House - Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site). "When I drove home, I saw twelve moons instead of one," wrote Frances Appleton Longfellow—the wife of the poet—on May 15, 1844, after hearing Ole Bull (1810–1880), the Norwegian violin virtuoso, for the first time. It was the height of the Transcendentalism fad in Boston. (Margaret Fuller was also swept away.) This video contains audio excepts from Henning Kraggerud's recital on March 5, 2012, in South Portland, Maine, USA, during the 2012 Longfellow Choral Festival. We invited Henning to Portland to perform music related to Ole Bull's multi-year friendship with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, highlighting Bull's connection to Maine through the home in Lebanon, Maine, and Bull's huge (you might call it single-handed) influence on the establishment of Norwegian cultural identity.
