Gidget is an American sitcom about a surfing, boy-crazy teenager called "Gidget" and her widowed father Russ Lawrence, a UCLA professor. Sally Field stars as Gidget with Don Porter as father Russell Lawrence. The series was first broadcast on ABC from September 15, 1965 to April 21, 1966.
Gidget was among the first regularly scheduled color programs on ABC, but did poorly in the Nielsen ratings and was cancelled at the end of its first season.
The television series was based upon concepts and characters created by Frederick Kohner in his 1957 novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas, which Kohner based upon the adventures of his teenage daughter Kathy. The novel was adapted into a 1959 movie starring Sandra Dee, James Darren and Cliff Robertson. The 1965 weekly, half-hour television series is seen by some as a sequel to the 1959 film, despite numerous discontinuities in plot, time frame and other details. It can also be seen as an independent incarnation, related to but distinct from either the novels or the films. Kohner served as a script consultant on the show.
Gidget is a 1959 Columbia Pictures CinemaScope feature film. It stars Sandra Dee, Cliff Robertson, and James Darren in a story about a teenager's initiation into the California surf culture and her affiliated romance with a young surfer. The screenplay was written by Gabrielle Upton, a nom de plume of Gillian Houghton who was then head writer of the soap opera The Secret Storm. This would be Upton's sole contribution to the Gidget canon. The screenplay was based upon Frederick Kohner's 1957 novel Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The film was directed by Paul Wendkos. Gidget was the precursor to the "beach party film" genre and was followed by two sequel films, various television series, several telemovies, and the spoof Psycho Beach Party. Gidget received one award nomination.
Gidget is credited by numerous sources (Stoked! A History of Surf Culture by Drew Kampion; The Encyclopedia of Surfing by Matt Warshaw; Riding Giants documentary film by Stacy Peralta - to name just three) as being the single main influence to bring surfing and the surfing subculture into the American mainstream.

Sally Field talks about her acting debut as "Gidget" in the 1965 TV series of the same name. She also talks about her relationship with her co-stars; Don Porter who played her father on-screen, and served as a real father figure for her off-screen as well. Lynette Winter who played her close friend and Pete Duel who played her brother-in-law. It's a shame the series only lasted for one season ! Gidget (Sally Field) as a car mechanic. She sure is cute in that overall. This clip includes the most hilarious scene in the entire episode 6, when she's under the oil tray of a car and gets her face all covered with oil! (It does look like real oil too, but I wonder if it isn't syrup after all...)
A young and extremely cute Sally Field as Gidget (1965-66). This clip is from the beginning of episode 6.

Theme song from "Gidget," full version. "Gidget" was an American sitcom about a surfing, boy-crazy teenager called "Gidget" and her widowed father Russ Lawrence, a UCLA professor. Sally Field starred as Gidget with Don Porter as her father. Though 18-year-old Sally Field defeated 75 other teenage girls for the title role of the 15-year-old Gidget, she exaggerated her surfing experience. The young actress had none and took lessons just to be able to pretend to surf for the cameras. The series was first broadcast on ABC from September 15, 1965 through April 21, 1966. Gidget was among the first regularly scheduled color programs on ABC, but did poorly in the Nielsen ratings. The series faced stiff competition from The Beverly Hillbillies on CBS and The Virginian on NBC, two established sh...
The original 1959 "Gidget" movie - which starred Sandra Dee, Cliff Robertson and James Darren (as Moondoggie) - was the beginning of a series of film and television adventures for this surf-loving teenager (based upon a true individual). It is noteworthy that James Darren - as "Moondoggie" - was the only mainstay in all three of the "Gidget" films, while the starring character herself kept changing: "Gidget" (1959 - Sandra Dee); "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" (1961 - Deborah Walley); and "Gidget Goes To Rome" (1963 - Cindy Carol). By the time "Gidget" made it to television in 1965, Jimmy Darren had moved on, and Sally Field's title character had another boyfriend as Jeff "Moondoggie". This first "Gidget" song was released in 1959 on Colpix CP 113, and was subsequently included in the pictured...

# James Darren music career started with "Gidget" in which he performed the title song "Gidget" and the song The Next Best Thing to Love", the previous one became a successful release the same year. "The Next Best Thing To Love" Lyrics by Stanley Styne Music by Fred Karger Performed by James Darren
Recorded in 1957 (when Debbie Reynolds was 23 years old) for the film "Tammy and the Bachelor," the song earned her a gold record and was the best-selling single by a female vocalist in 1957. The song spent 23 weeks on the "Top 40" charts. It was number one for five weeks on the Billboard pop charts. The song was nominated for a "Best Song" Academy Award in 1957, but lost to "All The Way" from the film, "The Joker Is Wild." In the movie (the first of the Tammy film series, and the only one Debbie Reynolds starred in), she co-starred with Leslie Nielsen. At the time "Tammy and the Bachelor" was filmed, Debbie Reynolds was still married to Eddie Fisher. Less than a year later, Eddie Fisher began his affair with Elizabeth Taylor. She acts sorta teenage, just in-between age
Looks about four foot three
Although she's just small fry, just about so-high
Gidget is the one for me
A regular tomboy but dressed for a prom
Boy, how cute can one girl be?
Although she's not king size, her finger is ring-size
Gidget is the one for me
If she says she loves you
You can bet your boots she loves you
If she says she hates you
That can also mean she loves you
It very well may be she's just a baby speaking romantically
If that's a bad feature, I'll be the teacher
Gidget is the one for me
She's not much on glamour
And she should improve her grammar
Still I sigh and stammer
And my heart beats like a little ole hammer
Strictly from Dixie, face like a pixie
Shorter than girls should be
The rest of the shipment standard equipment
Just a doll in dungarees
But Gidget is the one for me
SPOKEN: She's it!!
