Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death in 1977, and encompassed both adulation and controversy.
Chaplin's childhood in London was one of poverty and hardship. As his father was absent and his mother struggled financially, he was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine. When he was 14, his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing at an early age, touring music halls and later working as a stage actor and comedian. At 19 he was signed to the prestigious Fred Karno company, which took him to America. Chaplin was scouted for the film industry, and began appearing in 1914 for Keystone Studios. He soon developed the Tramp persona and formed a large fan base. Chaplin directed his own films from an early stage, and continued to hone his craft as he moved to the Essanay, Mutual, and First National corporations. By 1918, he was one of the best known figures in the world.

Sacha Baron Cohen on top form once again as he 'accidentally' knocks Grace Cullington, an elderly lady, supposed last known surviving actress to work with the late, great Charlie Chaplin, (or 'actor' to which she is referred in this clip), at the BAFTA LA Jaguar Britannia Awards on Sunday 10th November 2013. The numerous versions of this clip on Youtube ask whether this is a prank or for real, but as this full length clip shows, is just the Ali G and Borat comedian in his top form.

This rare 2 part documentary focuses on Charlie Chaplin's development at Keystone and Essanay. It concludes with a director's cut of the film Police (1916). The series is narrated by none other than Burgess Meredith. I have been seeking this documentary on official DVD release over the years and have yet to find it anywhere. I recorded the program from TV to VHS in the early 90s so I apologize for the quality. Nonetheless, it's a great series and I wanted to share it with other Chaplin fans. Enjoy.

Kid Auto Races at Venice (also known as The Pest) is a 1914 American short silent film starring Charles Chaplin in which his "Little Tramp" character makes his first appearance in a film exhibited before the public. The first film to be produced that featured the character was actually Mabel's Strange Predicament; it was shot a few days before Kid Auto Races but released two days after it. Made by Keystone Studios and directed by Henry Lehrman, the movie portrays Chaplin as a spectator at a 'baby-cart race' in Venice, Los Angeles. The spectator keeps getting in the way of the camera and interferes with the race, causing great frustration to the public and participants. The film was shot during the Junior Vanderbilt Cup, an actual race with Chaplin and Lehrman improvising gags in front of ...

LED took the action from stage to immersive for a tech client's corporate event. The premise was that the guests had walked in on a working sound stage with scenes from famous Golden Age films in progress. An old fashioned director and his paige boy drove the action to the delight of the party guests. Vampires in the rafters, cowboys and indians doing stunt fights at the bars, Charlie Chaplin's antics, Rhett and Scarlette's romantic exchanges, Gene Kelly dancing in actual rain on the sidewalk and lamposts outfront, and gorgeous starlettes and period photographers were just some of the surprises! Video shot and edited by Video Rahim.
It’s very difficult to make a real story with dialogue in a short time. I was thinking how to make a short film, with a story. The fist idea I had was to do a music clip, but it’s very difficult, because you need to now the song very well… so when I went to London film museum I saw a movie from Charlie Chaplin. I was thinking that it’s the easier way to do a film, no dialogues, not a real story but just small funny event not very complicated to do the film, I copied some of Charlie Chaplin’s cliché. I walk past the United States District Court building in Brooklyn almost every day. One sunny morning a few months ago, the courthouse entrance was swarming with the news media. The light was handsome, and the scale of the event was intriguing, so I joined in, even though I had no idea what was going on. As it turned out, it was the day Najibullah Zazi entered his plea of not guilty to terrorism conspiracy charges in connection with a plot to blow up New York City’s subway — a plea he reversed this past Monday. But on that autumn day, I was more interested in the commotion. There are cameras everywhere at media events, and by taking my camera out I blended in perfectly. I just aimed it mostly in the opposite direction from the others, shooting the shooters, as the other view was being pr...

Audio clip: Interview with Charlie Chaplin (29:10) Posted: 04 Dec 1954 Charles Spencer Chaplin (1889-1977), also known as Charlie Chaplin, stands for many as the greatest comedian. He was born in London and his childhood was marked by poverty and deprivation. His first stage appearance was like 5 years old and it became clear what the boy was going to be. Young Charlie and his brother Sydney began working as artists in Fred Karno vaudevilletrupp. The troop traveled to the United States and Charlie quickly became the crowd favorite. Offer of movie contract came as a result of it, and suddenly was Chaplin's silent film career started with a total of 35 films in the first year. Charlie Chaplin's final speech in movie 'The Great Dictator' (1940) I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor, that's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate; has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in: machinery that gives abund...

I interviewed Bradford West from Slava’s Snowshow after a photo shoot of the show at the Canberra Theatre, in Canberra, Australia. I was invited at the eleventh hour to shoot photographs of Slava's Snowshow on the day it opened in Canberra. I grabbed my camera and headed for the Canberra Theatre in the centre of town and started shooting. Elena Dolmatova, Slava's Snowshow's Company Manager, had arranged for three performers to do two pieces from the show: The Blue Canary and Snowstorm. At the end of the shoot, it became evident that they were keen to do an interview. I was about to pack up my gear when I spoke with Elena—she and a performer were the only ones to speak English: the rest spoke Russian I was told—to get more background on the show and the English-speaking performer. This video was made for a ELCA contest. The goal was to show what it meant to be Lutheran. At first we were going to interview our summer camp staff and throw it to music. That sounded boring. I decided we should show them rather than tell them. I don't know half of what that even means but I went with it, talked with a few people about it, and threw together a script. Yearning to show what it meant, we went with a "Charlie Chaplin" angle. Unfortunately, after the video was finished and uploaded. A comment on the site said "The video was fun, but I thought they were only supposed to be from 30 to 90 seconds long." Whoops.

The Pawnshop was Charlie Chaplin's sixth film for Mutual Film Corporation. Released on October 2, 1916, it stars Chaplin in the role of assistant to the pawnshop owner, played by Henry Bergman. |CINEMASTERS| is a series that focuses on film's most prominent and influential auteurs, past and present. Their achievements in directing simply cannot be outmatched and their influence on the art of cinema will forever be existent. This first episode is on Charlie Chaplin, one of the most amazingly accomplished individuals to have ever worked in film. He was more than just a slapstick comedian and his later films definitely showed that. A man that was able to stand up to Hitler while also being publicly ridiculed by America later on. This episode of |CineMasters| shows the upbeat side of Chaplin as well as the melancholy. A man so beloved yet ultimately so hated at one point. A truly remarkable yet depressing story of a director that still remains outmatched in his craft. Just an absolu...

The last 3 days I watched the speech of Charlie Chaplin in "The Great Dicator". Just in the morning to get a good start in the day. I think his speech might be the strongest ever made and you can easily see that good meaning endures time and artforms. But when I heard the song i believed to hear that it fit exactly to a Beat I heard from the Film "Blutzbrüdaz" by Sido. So I just sat down and put the Audio Track under the Beat and la Voila, lots of parts were fitting. It is pretty funny, cause in the movie Blutzbrüdaz, it is the main character Otis delivering a speech to the audience about moral in the showbusiness. I hope Sido won´t be mad at me for using his track, but I am sure he would like it too to see Charlie Battle Rapping against the Hate . Anyway Sido´s film film is awesome, ...

This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock! The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological. There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). His career began in 1980 when he began working with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi collective. He became extremely popular throughout Jamaica, memorable for his focus on cultural and social themes instead of the "slack" (rough, violent) lyrics that were popular at the time. I happened to cross paths with this talented and interesting fella about two years ago…he was opening a show in Philly with one of our favorites (Adrien Reju: check for her On the Hill Session from a little while back). His gently self-deprecating stage banter kept the audience laughing, and his songs let us know that he is for real. Thom and I chatted briefly after that show, and occasionally in the interim betwixt then and when we hosted him at our place…then, as now, as always, he is thoughtful, funny, and wicked smaht. Enjoy Mr. Thom McCarthy's music, and if you have a chance to meet him personally, take it. Check out Thom's session at: http://kettlepottracks.com/?p=4998

The Bank was Charlie Chaplin's tenth film for Essanay Films. Released in 1915, it is a departure from the tramp character, as Charlie Chaplin plays a janitor at a bank. Edna Purviance plays the secretary on whom Charlie has a crush and dreams that she has fallen in love with him. Filmed at the Majestic Studio in Los Angeles. Silent. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that this film was received any differently from the bulk of Chaplin's early work, but today this film is often considered one of his most fascinating efforts.
The Vagabond is a silent film by Charlie Chaplin and his third film with Mutual Films. Released to theaters on July 10, 1916, it co-starred Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell, Leo White and Lloyd Bacon. This film echoed Chaplin's work on The Tramp, with more drama and pathos mixed in with the comedy. The story begins with Charlie, the Tramp, arriving at a bar, playing on a violin to raise money and exciting rivalry with competing musicians - which results in a bar room brawl and comic mayhem.

The Great Dictator (1940) ____________________ By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world!
Anyway Sido´s film film is awesome, ...

du warst der kleine Mann
den nichts erschüttern kann.
Charly
Charly Chaplin
denn wer auf der Nase liegt
ist Iängst noch nicht besiegt
Charly
Charly Chaplin.
Deine Bilder sind wie ein Spiegel
den du vergnügt vor uns hältst
und du zeigst uns auf deine Weise:
Wir lachen doch eigentlich über uns selbst.
Oh Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
so warst du
so war dein Leben
Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
kleiner Mann
du warst ganz groá.
Oh Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
Ruhe hast du dir nie gegeben
oh Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
kleiner Mann
du warst ganz groá.
Über deine groáen Schuh' und deinen Wackelgang da
Oh Charly
Charly Chaplin
lachen alle Leute doch in hundert Jahren noch
Oh Charly
Charly Chaplin.
Schwere Zeiten und groáe Träume
gehen auch bei dir Hand in Hand
aber du sagst uns ohne Worte:
Nur der hat ein Ziel
der den Glauben an sich fand.
Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
so warst du
so war dein Leben
Oh Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
kleiner Mann
du warst ganz groá.
Oh Charly
oh Charly Chaplin
Ruhe hast du dir nie gegeben
