1999 (MCMXCIX) was a common year starting on Friday (dominical letter C) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1999th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 999th year of the 2nd millennium, the 99th year of the 20th century, and the 10th and last year of the 1990s decade.
1999 was designated as:
Philip Seymour Hoffman (July 23, 1967 – February 2, 2014) was an American actor, director, and producer of film and theater. Best known for his distinctive supporting and character roles – typically lowlifes, bullies, and misfits – Hoffman was a regular presence in films from the early 1990s until his death at age 46.
Drawn to theater as a teenager, Hoffman studied acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He began his screen career in a 1991 episode of Law & Order and started to appear in films in 1992. He gained recognition for his supporting work throughout the decade, notably in Boogie Nights (1997), Happiness (1998), The Big Lebowski (1998), Magnolia (1999), and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). He began to occasionally play leading roles, and for his portrayal of the author Truman Capote in Capote (2005), won multiple accolades including the Academy Award for Best Actor. Hoffman's profile continued to grow, and he received three more Oscar nominations for his supporting work as a brutally frank CIA officer in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), a priest accused of pedophilia in Doubt (2008), and the charismatic leader of a Scientology-type movement in The Master (2012).
Joel T. Schumacher (born August 29, 1939) is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer.
Some notable films he has directed include The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981), St. Elmo's Fire (1985), The Lost Boys (1987), Cousins (1989), Falling Down (1993), The Client (1994), Batman Forever (1995), A Time to Kill (1996), Batman & Robin (1997), Flawless (1999), Phone Booth (2003), Veronica Guerin (2003), The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and The Number 23 (2007). Before he launched his career as a director, Schumacher also wrote the screenplay adaptation of The Wiz (1978).
Schumacher was born in New York City, the son of Marian (née Kantor) and Francis Schumacher. His mother was a Swedish Jew, and his father was a Baptist from Knoxville, Tennessee, who died when Joel was four years old. Schumacher studied at Parsons The New School for Design and The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. After first working in the fashion industry, he realized his true love was in filmmaking. He moved out to Los Angeles, where he began his media work as a costume designer in films such as Woody Allen's Sleeper and Interiors and developed his skills with television work while earning an MFA from UCLA.
A surname or family name is a name added to a given name. In many cases, a surname is a family name and many dictionaries define "surname" as a synonym of "family name". In the western hemisphere, it is commonly synonymous with last name because it is usually placed at the end of a person's given name.
In most Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, two or more last names (or surnames) may be used. In China, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Taiwan, Vietnam, and parts of India, the family name is placed before a person's given name.
The style of having both a family name (surname) and a given name (forename) is far from universal. In many countries, it is common for ordinary people to have only one name or mononym.
The concept of a "surname" is a relatively recent historical development, evolving from a medieval naming practice called a "byname". Based on an individual's occupation or area of residence, a byname would be used in situations where more than one person had the same name.
Robert De Niro (/dəˈnɪroʊ/; born August 17, 1943) is an American actor and producer who has starred in over 90 films. His first major film roles were in the sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) and Martin Scorsese's crime film Mean Streets (1973). After being turned down for the role of Sonny Corleone in the crime film The Godfather (1972), he was cast as the young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
De Niro's longtime collaboration with Scorsese later earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in the 1980 film Raging Bull. He also earned nominations for the psychological thrillers Taxi Driver (1976) and Cape Fear (1991), both directed by Scorsese. De Niro received additional Academy Award nominations for Michael Cimino's Vietnam war drama The Deer Hunter (1978), Penny Marshall's drama Awakenings (1990), and David O. Russell's romantic comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook (2012). His portrayal of gangster Jimmy Conway in Scorsese's crime film Goodfellas (1990) earned him a BAFTA nomination in 1990. De Niro has earned four nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, for his work in the musical drama New York, New York (1977), opposite Liza Minnelli, the action comedy Midnight Run (1988), the gangster comedy Analyze This (1999), and the comedy Meet the Parents (2000). He has also simultaneously directed and starred in films such as the crime drama A Bronx Tale (1993) and the spy film The Good Shepherd (2006). De Niro has also received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2003 and the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2010.

In Philip Seymore Hoffman's directorial debut, Jack Goes Boating is an unconventional romantic comedy set in the midst of working-class New York City life. In the dead of winter, we meet Jack (Philip Seymore Hoffman of CAPOTE), a limo driver who has vague dreams of landing a job with the MTA, a mild obsession with a reggae song, and has begun a half-hearted attempt at growing dreadlocks. He spends most of his time hanging out with his best friend and fellow driver, Clyde (John Ortiz of PRIDE AND GLORY) and Clyde's wife Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega of Broadway's RENT). After being set up with the couple's friend Connie (Amy Ryan of GONE BABY GONE), Jack is inspired to learn to cook, pursue a new career, and take swimming lessons from Clyde so he can give Connie the romantic boat ride she has alw...

Philip Seymour Hoffman's most confused role. July 23, 1967 - February 2, 2014; here's to never forgetting him.

The best Screen moments of my favorite actor Update 2/3/14: I've never been so upset about a celeb death. I made this after a discussion with a friend about how PSH always got type cast as a sexual deviant of some kind (though aren't we all?), a huge asshole, or some form of creep. I went on youtube to look for a PSH super cut (like the Nicolas Cage one that was popular at the time) but found none, so I did it myself. There are some obvious classic PSH moments missing from this vid. Most of them due to him saying something brilliant, but the camera not being held on him. Others just didn't fit well. And some I just plain missed. Hoffman was already an actor I loved, but having watched every movie of his (that I could find a copy of), I gained a new appreciation for his ability to chos...
A scene from "Flawless - Personne n'est parfait(e)", 1999, directed by Joël Schumacher. With Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman (I love this actor). Gay republicans meet Drag queens leaded by Rusty (Philip Seymour Hoffman). I DON'T OWN THIS CONTENT.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of the greatest actors of this generation. In a tragic loss by the addiction to drugs we have truly lost a great individual. This video not only represents Hoffman's exceptional ability to transform himself into the body of each role, but moments of extraordinary talent. This is a tribute to an incredible person, to the world of cinema, who suffered from a terrible addiction. This tribute is a collection of some of my personal favorite scenes by Hoffman. Please, if you know of someone that has an addiction of any kind, do something before it's too late. It's a shame that it takes a person of "value", in our society, to die for the subject of a very serious issue to become more relevant. R.I.P Mr. Hoffman. You struggled with one of the biggest obstacles ...
This is my favorite scene from the 2012 film, The Master.
