Laika (Russian: Лайка; c. 1954 – November 3, 1957) was a Soviet space dog who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth. Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957.
Little was known about the impact of spaceflight on living creatures at the time of Laika's mission, and the technology to de-orbit had not yet been developed, and therefore Laika's survival was not expected. Some scientists believed humans would be unable to survive the launch or the conditions of outer space, so engineers viewed flights by animals as a necessary precursor to human missions. The experiment aimed to prove that a living passenger could survive being launched into orbit and endure micro-gravity, paving the way for human spaceflight and providing scientists with some of the first data on how living organisms react to spaceflight environments.
Laika died within hours from overheating, possibly caused by a failure of the central R-7 sustainer to separate from the payload. The true cause and time of her death were not made public until 2002; instead, it was widely reported that she died when her oxygen ran out on day six or, as the Soviet government initially claimed, she was euthanised prior to oxygen depletion.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.
This is a list of existing major film festivals, sorted by continent.
A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or traditions, often marked as a local or national holiday, mela or eid. Next to religion and folklore, a significant origin is agricultural. Food is such a vital resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time. Religious commemoration and thanksgiving for good harvests are blended in events that take place in autumn, such as Halloween in the northern hemisphere and Easter in the southern.
Festivals often serve to fulfill specific communal purposes, especially in regard to commemoration or thanksgiving. The celebrations offer a sense of belonging for religious, social, or geographical groups, contributing to group cohesiveness. They may also provide entertainment, which was particularly important to local communities before the advent of mass-produced entertainment. Festivals that focus on cultural or ethnic topics also seek to inform community members of their traditions; the involvement of elders sharing stories and experience provides a means for unity among families.
A film, also called a movie, motion picture or photoplay, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the phi phenomenon. This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations.
The process of filmmaking is both an art and an industry.

LAIKA, a dynamic typeface. ======================= For our bachelor thesis, we engaged ourselfs with dynamic typography, especially with dynamic typefaces. Since not much work has been done in this field, we devised a system in which a typeface would not be defined static fonty styles anymore but would be able to change it‘s shape and appearance at any moment reacting to a broad spectrum of inputs. This is an amazing piece of stop motion done for Laika's production of "Coraline". Henry Selick, the director of the feature, and I thought that this could be viral piece to use in promoting the film. This version is a little over the top but it shows the complexity of rigs used to create some of the shots. By itself, it looks like an art installation. By multiplying the images it became even more abstract. The fact that it was shot against blue allowed me to matte is back on itself. Use any psychoactive substances with caution while viewing. Stick with it and you will see what the finished shot looked like and a view of the set itself shot in timelapse.

I'm a huge fan of Laika, and I was ecstatic when I got to visit their studio last month in Portland for the release of their latest animated film, The Boxtrolls. For those who haven't seen the film, it's about a young orphaned boy named Eggs (Isaac Hempstead Wright) who is raised by underground cave-dwelling trash collectors who he must save from evil exterminator Archibald Snatched (Ben Kingsley). During my visit, I met with Laika CEO, producer and animator Travis Knight (click here for the full interview), Director of Rapid Prototyping Brian McLean and Visual Effects Supervisor Steve Emerson (click here for the full interview), Creative Supervisor of Puppet Fabrication Georgina Hayns, and Costume Designer Deborah Cook. They all had fascinating things to say about the movie, and this v...

This short video was taken during the View Conference 2016 in Turin (Italy). It shows a very nice video from the “10 years at Laika” talk of Steve Emerson, VFX Supervisor at Laika.
I got up at half past four
Forty-four robbers around my door
Forty-four - and maybe more
What the hell they want me for?
Stubbly faces & gap-tooth grins
Ain't no way I'm lettin' them in
No way - you can't come in
Forty-four robbers stinkin' of gin
Uh huh - I ain't lettin' you in
I'll hit you with a rolling pin
So small can't hurt a fly
Get in my way and I'll sure as hell try
To kick your butt down the block
Can't wait yellin' for the cops
Fifty dealers and fifty thieves
Starring at the drive-in on my street
Shit, over my shoulder there's popeye and bluto
Looking nasty - can I remember my judo?
It's always like this - going out alone
So damn scared might never leave home
I've got my freedom I've got my pride
All means nothin' with these men outside
Puffing and preening and strutting their stuff
Blocking my way out - I've had enough!
Give me justice - hand it over now
Gotta get a gun or maybe just leave town...
See ya!
Sly stallone and al capone
Are giving me grief on the telephone
All I want is a swiss cheese sarnie
When at the deli stands big arnie
Hey jean-claude - move aside
That taxi's mine - I'm taking that ride
When I go out to get the sunday paper
What's my man to think 'someone might rape her'? !
I'm just having a beer on my own
Don't mean hulk hogan can take me home
I've got my mace but my loud-as-fuck whistle
Is so ineffective I just pray the epistles
For help to come someday soon
But until then I'll stay in my room
