Okay Educational Short Film Fans! Direct from 1985 I present "Halloween Safety [Second Edition]", yanked straight from the Centron/ Coronet film vaults. Produced 8 years after the original, this was also filmed in my hometown of Lawrence, KS and stocked with local acting talent & scenery.
Really more a complete reworking than a "second edition", the difference in both era and production aesthetics is apparent within the first few seconds of the film's un-spooling: check out that killer montage of awesome dime-store masks flying through the air! Yeah! This is immediately followed up by some great & simple shots of kids walking around in cheapo store-bought Ben Cooper & Topstone getups, which felt just perfect. I mean, maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but despite the fact that on the real Halloween night in 1985 I was busily enjoying something billed as "The Scum Of The Earth Costume Party", seeing those kids parade about in their outfits more than managed to resurface plenty of decade-dormant memories. Sadly none of my childhood regional Midwestern candy faves show up during the treat sequences though -- where the hell are the Cherry Mashes & Valomilks? Ah well, I guess you can't have everything.
So anyway, settle back from the vantage point of 22 years worth of hindsight and help yourself to loads of quality advice on pumpkin carving, fire hazards, costume functionality, mask visibility, street crossing etiquette, vandalism & mayhem, treat tampering (bear in mind that this was only a few years after the 1982 Tylenol murders), and more -- all told against a sub-Michael Jackson soundtrack by an animated Jack-O-Lantern narrator!

This was my first edited video production. Filmed in March of 1985 with a Panasonic camera on one shoulder and a VHS video recorder on the other, it was quite a chore. Especially since this was a vacation video and not a paid job. At the time, I had no editing equipment and no plans to edit the video. Editing was done in the fall of 1985, a few months after I turned my hobby into a business and aquired a Sony U-Matic editng system. The freeze frames, dissolves and titles were added a few years later to mask some of the shaky transitions caused by the poor time base of the VHS aquisition format.

Mask is a 1985 American drama film directed by Peter Bogdanovich, starring Cher, Sam Elliott, and Eric Stoltz. Dennis Burkley and Laura Dern are featured in supporting roles. Cher received the 1985 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actress. The film is based on the life and early death of Roy L. "Rocky" Dennis, a boy who suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, an extremely rare disorder known commonly as lionitis due to the disfiguring cranial enlargements that it causes. Mask won the Academy Award for Best Makeup while Cher and Stoltz received Golden Globe nominations for their performances.
Plot
In 1978 Azusa, California, Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), who suffers from a skull deformity, is accepted without question by his freewheeling biker mother's boyfriends, his "extended motorcycle family," and his maternal grandparents, who share his love of baseball card collecting; but is treated with fear, pity, awkwardness, and teasing by those unaware of his humanity, humor, and intelligence. Rocky's mother, Florence "Rusty" Dennis (Cher), is determined to give Rocky as normal a life as possible, in spite of her own wild ways as a member of the Turks biker gang, as well as her strained relationship with her parents. She fights for Rocky's inclusion in a mainstream junior high school, and confronts a principal who would rather classify Rocky as mentally retarded and relegate him to a special education school, despite the fact that his condition hasn't affected his intelligence.

Direct from 1985 I present "Halloween Safety [Second Edition]", yanked straight from the Centron/ Coronet film vaults. Produced 8 years after the original, this was also filmed in my hometown of Lawrence, KS and stocked with local acting talent & scenery. Really more a complete reworking than a "second edition", the difference in both era and production aesthetics is apparent within the first few seconds of the film's un-spooling: check out that killer montage of awesome dime-store masks flying through the air! Yeah! This is immediately followed up by some great & simple shots of kids walking around in cheapo store-bought Ben Cooper & Topstone getups, which felt just perfect. I mean, maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but despite the fact that on the real Halloween night in 1985 I was busily enjoying something billed as "The Scum Of The Earth Costume Party", seeing those kids parade about in their outfits more than managed to resurface plenty of decade-dormant memories. Sadly none of my childhood regional Midwestern candy faves show up during the treat sequences though -- where the hell are the Cherry Mashes & Valomilks? Ah well, I guess you can't have everything. So anyway, settle back from the vantage point of 22 years worth of hindsight and help yourself to loads of quality advice on pumpkin carving, fire hazards, costume functionality, mask visibility, street crossing etiquette, vandalism & mayhem, treat tampering (bear in mind that this was only a few years after the 1982 Tylenol murders), and more -- all told against a sub-Michael Jackson soundtrack by an animated Jack-O-Lantern narrator! ---------- -

This was my first edited video production. Filmed in March of 1985 with a Panasonic camera on one shoulder and a VHS video recorder on the other, it was quite a chore. Especially since this was a vacation video and not a paid job. At the time, I had no editing equipment and no plans to edit the video. Editing was done in the fall of 1985, a few months after I turned my hobby into a business and aquired a Sony U-Matic editng system. The freeze frames, dissolves and titles were added a few years later to mask some of the shaky transitions caused by the poor time base of the VHS aquisition format. -

This was my first edited video production. Filmed in March of 1985 with a Panasonic camera on one shoulder and a VHS video recorder on the other, it was quite a chore. Especially since this was a vacation video and not a paid job. At the time, I had no editing equipment and no plans to edit the video. Editing was done in the fall of 1985, a few months after I turned my hobby into a business and aquired a Sony U-Matic editng system. The freeze frames, dissolves and titles were added a few years later to mask some of the shaky transitions caused by the poor time base of the VHS aquisition format.

James Horner Tribute
A visual tribute to the orchestral mind of the Academy Award-winning composer James Horner (Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar, Aliens, A Beautiful Mind). Unfourtunately, Mr. Horner lost his life this June doing what he loved, flying. James Horner was an avid aviation fan, and always willing to work on any aviation project. He has left his mark on the music industry with almost 200 films, and some still to release (The 33, The Magnificent Seven). This is a compilation of most of them. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Okay Educational Short Film Fans! Direct from 1985 I present "Halloween Safety [Second Edition]", yanked straight from the Centron/ Coronet film vaults. Produced 8 years after the original, this was also filmed in my hometown of Lawrence, KS and stocked with local acting talent & scenery.
Really more a complete reworking than a "second edition", the difference in both era and production aesthetics is apparent within the first few seconds of the film's un-spooling: check out that killer montage of awesome dime-store masks flying through the air! Yeah! This is immediately followed up by some great & simple shots of kids walking around in cheapo store-bought Ben Cooper & Topstone getups, which felt just perfect. I mean, maybe I'm just speaking for myself here, but despite the fact that on the real Halloween night in 1985 I was busily enjoying something billed as "The Scum Of The Earth Costume Party", seeing those kids parade about in their outfits more than managed to resurface plenty of decade-dormant memories. Sadly none of my childhood regional Midwestern candy faves show up during the treat sequences though -- where the hell are the Cherry Mashes & Valomilks? Ah well, I guess you can't have everything.
So anyway, settle back from the vantage point of 22 years worth of hindsight and help yourself to loads of quality advice on pumpkin carving, fire hazards, costume functionality, mask visibility, street crossing etiquette, vandalism & mayhem, treat tampering (bear in mind that this was only a few years after the 1982 Tylenol murders), and more -- all told against a sub-Michael Jackson soundtrack by an animated Jack-O-Lantern narrator!

This was my first edited video production. Filmed in March of 1985 with a Panasonic camera on one shoulder and a VHS video recorder on the other, it was quite a chore. Especially since this was a vacation video and not a paid job. At the time, I had no editing equipment and no plans to edit the video. Editing was done in the fall of 1985, a few months after I turned my hobby into a business and aquired a Sony U-Matic editng system. The freeze frames, dissolves and titles were added a few years later to mask some of the shaky transitions caused by the poor time base of the VHS aquisition format.

A visual tribute to the orchestral mind of the Academy Award-winning composer James Horner (Titanic, Braveheart, Avatar, Aliens, A Beautiful Mind). Unfourtunately, Mr. Horner lost his life this June doing what he loved, flying. James Horner was an avid aviation fan, and always willing to work on any aviation project. He has left his mark on the music industry with almost 200 films, and some still to release (The 33, The Magnificent Seven). This is a compilation of most of them.
Since this great composer has been working so long, it is unfourtunate that a lot of his older films have not been restored or are already missing. Please enjoy, and remeber this brilliant composer for the rest of time.
