Like an adult version of a fun-house mirror, the Cloud Gate sculpture is one of Chicago's coolest tourist attractions.
The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer.
It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams.
Some people say it was inspired by liquid mercury, I think it really was inspired my fun house mirrors :).

Cloud Gate is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed The Bean because of its shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet (10 by 20 by 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (100 t; 98 long tons).
Kapoor's design was inspired by liquid mercury and the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12-foot (3.7 m) high arch. On the underside is the "omphalos" (Greek for "navel"), a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections. The sculpture builds upon many of Kapoor's artistic themes, and it is popular with tourists as a photo-taking opportunity for its unique reflective properties.

Gate
A gate or gateway is a point of entry to a space enclosed by walls, or a moderately sized opening in some sort of fence. Gates may prevent or control the entry or exit of individuals, or they may be merely decorative. Other terms for gate include yett and port. The word derives from the old Norse "gata", meaning road or path, and originally referred to the gap in the wall or fence, rather than the barrier which closed it. The moving part or parts of a gateway may be called "doors", but used for the whole point of entry door usually refers to the entry to a building, or an internal opening between different rooms.
A gate may have a latch to keep it from swinging and a lock for security. Larger gates can be used for a whole building, such as a castle or fortified town, or the actual doors that block entry through the gatehouse. Today, many gate doors are opened by an automated gate operator.

Cloud
In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of liquid droplets or frozen crystals made of water or various chemicals. The droplets or particles are suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. On Earth clouds are formed by the saturation of air in the homosphere when air cools or gains water vapor.
Cloud types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adaptation of Luke Howard's nomenclature. It was formally proposed in December 1802 and published for the first time the following year. It became the basis of a modern international system that classifies these tropospheric aerosols into several physical forms which can be found at various altitude levels or étages.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (Chinese: 雲門舞集) is a modern dance group based in Taiwan, the first of its kind in Taiwan and Asia. It was founded by choreographer Lin Hwai-min in 1973, and later he shared its management with his late protégé, Lo Man-fei, a renowned choreographer in her own right. The troupe was inactive from October 1988 to September 1990. During this time, Lin spent time abroad in India and Indonesia, and studied at New York University.
Stylistic innovations
Lin Hwai-min, in addition to being the founder and creative force behind Cloud Gate is also an important author of short stories, and was intimately involved in the literary scene in Taiwan in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Cloud Gate thrilled the Taiwan cultural scene when it came into being in the 1970s with an unbroken series of innovative dances and dance directions. Lin Hwai-min led the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in their first public performance at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei in 1972. Lin, himself, exhibits tireless curiosity about new forms and directions, and consequently Cloud Gate blends its roots in Asian mythology, folklore, and aesthetics with a modern sensibility. Dancers practice and perform using such diverse movement disciplines and artistic approaches as t'ai chi, meditation, martial arts, modern dance, and ballet.

Like an adult version of a fun-house mirror, the Cloud Gate sculpture is one of Chicago's coolest tourist attractions.
The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer.
It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams.
Some people say it was inspired by liquid mercury, I think it really was inspired my fun house mirrors :).

Like an adult version of a fun-house mirror, the Cloud Gate sculpture is one of Chicago's coolest tourist attractions.
The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer.
It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams.
Some people say it was inspired by liquid mercury, I think it really was inspired my fun house mirrors :).

Like an adult version of a fun-house mirror, the Cloud Gate sculpture is one of Chicago's coolest tourist attractions. The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer. It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams. At that very moment, a truck rams their car from behind and Paige crashes through the windshield. Both of them are rushed to the emergency room, and as Leo, in a voice-over talks about how "moments of impact help in finding who we are" the movie cuts to how Paige and Leo first met. The scenes of how they courted, proposed and married at the Art Institute of Chicago and share a kiss under the Cloud Gate are interwoven with the present.
When Paige regains consciousness, she thinks Leo is her doctor, having lost all memories of the past few years. When her wealthy parents, Bill and Rita Thornton, learn about this and visit her, it is the first time that Leo meets them, and they are not happy about Leo taking their daughter, and not telling them about it. Paige does not understand why he would not have met her parents, having been married, and finds it even stranger that he did not know why either, nor did she understand why she left law school, broke her engagement with her previous fiancé, Jeremy, and why she has not been in touch with her family and friends. Her parents insist on taking her home with them and Paige agrees, assuming she might have married Leo for some mutual benefit and seeks evidence of the marriage. Just as she's about to leave, Leo comes running to play her a voice message in which she sounds very happy and romantic. Paige decides to go back with Leo, hoping it will help her regain her lost memory. Paige is welcomed home with a surprise party by her friends, but as she is not able to remember any of them, she finds it overwhelming and is extremely confused.

Along the way we pass by some famous buildings including Chicago Sun Times, Trump Tower, Oriental Theater, Marina City, the Chicago Theater, and The Old Chicago Water Tower that survived the old Chicago fire. We also make a few pit stops at other water towers along the way explaining their importance to the flatlands.
We stop by the attractions off the beaten path like, Oz Park, the Shit Fountain, and the haunted Stickney House.
