Their travel is largely through kayak and other water vessels in the summer and dog sled during the winter. They have some contact with white people of "western" civilization, with whom they barter for goods at set trading posts. However, their life is primarily one of subsistence, with Nanook and the men hunting for food to keep them alive, which is not always easy. Their food sources are primarily sea related - salmon, seal and walrus - meaning that they spend most of their time along the Hudson's Bay shore, although animals such as white foxes, polar bears and deer are also prized for food and/or hide and fur. Ice buildup during the winter makes it that much more difficult to access the water, and the food underneath the water. But the harsh winter also provide certain opportunities, such as the plentiful raw material of ice and snow to construct temporary shelters, namely igloos, to protect them from the elements, and easier ways to spot water-dwelling seals. https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/film862884.html Aclamadísimo documental, pionero y modelo, que narra las duras condiciones de vida de una familia esquimal del ártico. La detallada realidad de esta raza, que vive en medio de un clima casi imposible para el resto de los humanos, es lo que plasmó el antropólogo, explorador y cartógrafo Robert J. Flaherty cuando fue a rodar la cotidianeidad del esquimal Nanook y de su familia, en la Hudson Bay (Bahía de Hudson) -Canadá-, a comienzos de los años veinte. Ya entre los años 1910 y 1920 Flaherty, que había sido contratado por el magnate del ferrocarril canadiense William Mackenzie para explorar dicha zona, había realizado varias incursiones en la vida de los esquimales. Alentado por Mackenzie para que se trajera un documento animado con "ese nuevo invento" llamado cinematógrafo, Flaherty filmó en uno de sus viajes miles de metros de película, pero casi todo se perdió en un desafortunado incendio. Animado por su reciente esposa Frances, Flaherty se decidió a buscar financiación (encontrándola en la empresa peletera Revillon Frères) para volver a la Hudson Bay con el único propósito de hacer una película sobre los esquimales. Allí convivió con ellos, cámara en mano, durante más de un año, rodando su modo de vivir, sobrevivir, amar y cazar en la fría tundra canadiense. De vuelta a la "civilización", el singular documental de Flaherty apenas obtuvo un nulo interés inicial en Estados Unidos, y sólo tras su éxito en Europa, gracias a la distribución por parte de la Pathé, alcanzó su reputada notoriedad.
